  1. Had Gareth on site today, we filled a 8 ton grain trailer with chip by lunch using his tracked chipper. Not with nice woody branches near the trailer either. Laurel hedge reduction at the wrong end of 2 sets of steps, 2 gates and 3 sides of the house. Gareth cracked on, looked for the next thing to move the job on and didn't mind working through lunch to get finished before it rained. Strongly recommended, but you can queue behind me as I'll be booking him for some of my coming jobs. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Cheers Chris, will chase FMS about the smaller vreten, tyres are skinny enough on the 7t! Had some good service off Holmes in the past but usually involved multiple calls. The home brews don't look too shoddy but can't see FC signing them off! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Chris, Didn't see the addition that Steve did. Know what you mean about the tyres though. Have looked at Weimers and Vreten. The We 5 looks good but the wheels / tyres would need changing and the draw bar cylinder / hoses looks a bit exposed. like the Vreten 700 as well but heavy and over large for job. Know anyone bring Weimers in?
  4. Gotta say the alstor has its place and its problems. I've driven one enough to get my Fmo on it and decide to go the alpine & trailer route. Looking at a big hp alpine and still trying to source a good 4-5t trailer (recommendations welcome). Have decide to go drag to start with and retro a cage drive later. This is due to finance and not being able to find a suitable off shelf driven unit. Have heard that Riko are looking at a driven trailer system, but struggling with the complexity/ longevity/cost/weight equation.any updates Jim? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. Look like different folk to me, one being in Penrith and Canada, buying product in the other being in Dundee and making the bags. I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. http://bagsupplies.com/uk/contactus.htm http://www.bsfl-bulk-bags.co.uk/ Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Not up to date, last lot I got was > 6 months ago. Good to deal with on the phone and the bags I got aren't too stretchy either.
  7. Try these guys, they beat bag supplies on price last time I was buying. Log Bags, Vented Log Bags, Bulk Bag Supplies
  8. Multiply the cubic volume of the stack by 0.55 to 0.65 (the smoother more even the timber the closer to 0.65). This will give you volume of solid timber. Fresh birch comes in around 1.07 cubic metres to the tonne. All the figures are rough, as it also depends on taper, log diameters etc etc. Enjoy the maths, is he selling by stack volume or solid timber volume?
  9. How bigs the compact tractor you can get hold of? A way to get round the lawn damage is boards - ply or HDPE depending on how you feel on the costs v's investment. Then if you can get a bigger sheep trailer behind the tractor you should be onto a winner. Eg's Ground Protection Mats - Temporary Road Panels - Portable Road Surfaces TF604B Double Axle ATV Trailer
  10. Email me a summary of experience, forestry/arb, landscape etc and your contact info. Good luck, There's a few folk looking at the moment. Dave
  11. I use more than I should as people seem to like to "borrow" them, even when double screwed to gates. Use the following types, 2,3,5,10,13,14,17,22,24,27,32 & 72 The Deer related ones will be increasingly in demand as RA's and high seat issues are starting to rear their heads in deer stalking circles. Not sure how you would promote you as the source for them to that particular market, as few stalkers would be aware of you at the moment. I bought from the site shown last time, and from memory the prices shown are plus P&P and Vat so nearer £6-7 a pop by the time its all done from memory.
  12. No worries. It's your wood sell it out of county if you want. I doubt you'll be short of buyers, depending on price. Sounds like haulage might kill it.
  13. What you calling "local to Kendal"? How about Ulverston? If its ok I and another (Barrow way) would be interested in a wagon each.
  14. Gods structure but does suffer rot, a lot of basal and pruned branches for eg's. Tends to out compete in woodland setting, heavy shade, but at least the leaf litter decomposes quickly, unlike beech. Supports good afid populations, a problem similar to Limes in the wrong setting. Seems to have taken over from elm in hedgerows. Open grown mature specimens are something to be seen. Not sure about the whole native or otherwise argument. With all the incoming p&d at the moment, if the Sycamore wants to join our club I'd wave the joining fee. Excellent firewood, especially if its tight grown coppice poles. Processing & harvesting heaven on a 10-15 year cycle.
  15. Poly tunnels used for growing veg etc are too small for a tractor & loader. Try looking at the animal housing ones, even got plenty of base ventilation and the mesh keeps the worst of the wet out. My neighbour clears his with a tractor & loader once he's lambed/ calved. http://www.polybuild.com/Livestock_Sheep.html
  16. +1 for BARF. Got a mate that races Malamutes and all his dogs are on BARF, only trips to the vet are for the complex stitching jobs (split pads, torn puncture wounds etc) that he's not happy doing. Considering putting my 3 on to it, at the moment I feed mix of rabbit & venison when I can. Dean, good with sorting him out.
  17. Thinking about doing it a job in the states. Might have to be a new boxed up one and bring a dirty old one back. Interested in others experience myself.
  18. Here's an option on the horse, which on the site shown would've been better due to the size of the ridges being worked in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qgj_j3AA3gw&sns=em I've used the same type of machine clearing blow on a stepped & sloping site. We were able to cut n clear an extraction route where we wanted. Pushing plates back in and blading stacking / turning areas in the middle of the blow then allowed for a tractor to come in and forward the timber out. In thinnings we can usually get away with a single line for a rack and extract in whole tree or pole length. Yet to try it on selective thin, as pole lengths usually end up with too much marking of remaining trees to be acceptable. There's always a way, it's just if the maths works
  19. Good luck mate, sounds like the kind of thing I'd do! might be worth having some back up screws and filler to hand, just in case the new glue doesn't take due to the "polish"
  20. +1 for that. How may times have I tried changing batteries, in the dark with gloves whilst waiting for Mr Grey to turn up!
  21. Got Simmons Whitetail on the .177 and a Leupold VX III on the .22 FAC, (had an MTC and moved it on). Got Swarovski on the .243 and Schmidt & Bender on the .308. Cant touch the last too with anything else I've tried, but that what the money gets you. Have you tried, Classifieds Good for 2nd hand glass from full bore shooters. Are you after paper or prey?
  22. Yep 2nd one sits in the cap as a spare. Just as well as one always seems flat when I come to use it!
  23. Cypresses species for me. Based on lack of ore structure end on, the fibrous bark and the bark pattern. Cut plenty but given most of it away !!
  24. More photos needed mate, bark view is helpful, as is a few different pics of different logs. What is that makes you think it's not hardwood?
  25. Get thru about 20 cube in a winter. Old drafts farmhouse, 2x 5kw stoves plus a 15kw that does the heating & HW. Have an elderly relative living with us so that's one stove on 24/7 from sept till may(ish) and the main stoves goes all day at weekends or if there's someone working at home. On a practical level I prefer 2 yr old oak, means I get to sit down instead of doing rounds to feed fires and refill log baskets!
