  1. Look around, What's already growing well? Otherwise, try Ash, Alder, Birch, Sycamore and eucalyptus (not that good in frost hollows). Just plant it tight so it goes straight up and doesn't bother with branches - saves cutting them off later!.
  2. See as you're local, have you talked to these guys - they're doing some heavily grant aided work around getting woods back into management. They will at least know of some local folk that can come give you advice on your patch, if not help with grants etc. Cumbria Woodlands - Home
  3. big log arch on 16" end and an even bigger tractor & winch at the other end, go quiet and I'll give you a 50/50 chance of no incidents
  4. If you just want to cut a track through I know a man with a stump grinder mounted on a digger. Took about 10 mins to do a 30" ash stump for me the other day. Otherwise cut them low or leave them, there must be better uses for your time/money?
  5. Here's a thought. Halve your bag size and see if he still orders half a bag! You never know he might order two, cos 1 bag aint enough!
  6. Interesting point JP. Looking through the bumpf that came with some new steel keylock oval crabs and Petzl states the lifetime as 7 yrs. Marketing ploy or realistic representation of how long a 27 Kn steel crab will be safe for?
  7. Used to run that activity for groups. If the rigging is solid and the kit in good nick its fairly safe. The damage to ropes (we used to tripple up the climbing lines) was more from rubbing on the edges than the shock of the fall - well below a fall factor of 1 (vertical fall divided by length rope used to stop fall). It was / is a complete head game, we used have about a 60% refusal rate at first attempt. We had to stop using the site we had sorted after Railtrack started to do maintenance and didn't want us their "for health and safety reasons"
  8. Getting 4-6 calls a week as a result of the ad, unfortunately quite a few further than its worth going to. On the other side just taken an order for 5 cube, as soon as he's finished his woodshed, less than 5 mins away and already talking about getting next years firewood sorted in the summer - my kind of customer! Best (only!) money I've spent on shifting firewood.
  9. How far south? Ive no access to Sika and apparently the taste nice? If you've space for a 2/3 completed DSC2 with 4x4 & tracking dog, that's happy to drag etc drop me a PM. Hows woodlands going?

    IBC Cage

Get round the local sheep farms, they get molasses in them for winter / lambing time sheep feed. I get mine from the local farm for £20 for 4, once they're empty:thumbup1:
  11. John, What you handling the cages with? Creating more storage at mine at the moment, using bags at the moment but can only stack 3 high so might consider a change if it's worth the investment.
  12. Have you tried forest machine services- hexham? I know Lee was going thru a divorce last time I spoke to him, so there were other pressures on the business.
  13. John - sitting down? £30- 36K mark depending on which model you go for. Not sure what you want the 3 pl / pto for? but the but plate can be adapted to carry things and there's a high flow output front & back for things to run on circa 70 lpm. I know they have fitted hydraulic tongs over the winch for one guy, so you can winch in and grab from the cab, on the youtube somewhere. Best person to talk to is Kenny at FMS or Fuelwood depending on whos nearer (hand in glove these days), for questions / info its Kenny. Forest Machine Services I Wark, Northumberland I Suppliers of forestry machinery I Comprehensive workshop to modify and engineer soultuions to exsisting forest machinery
  14. Not quite the same but can do similar jobs. ! Mine has just finished on a windblow site that I got cos "normal" machines couldn't get in without major works and tidy up after aka not viable.
  15. It's only what he's asking for, he may not get it. Then again, a farming mate of mine got more than he paid for his 70 hp JD after 4 years of light work, when he traded up the other month!
  16. I've a small stihl one and a larger one. The small one is ace on the processor and the longer for getting it to the processor. I'm looking for one with a heavy head/ sledge head as well then it' be a great felling tool- rolling, dragging and driving wedges all in one.
  17. Some 8" pipe off cuts, rebar to suit and some concrete. All your left to to do after the trip to your scrappy is dig the holes and pour the concrete. If the pipe is visually unacceptable a grinder will soon strip it off. Did the same thing to give a pair of poles to end a stack of cord in the yard.
  18. Yep that's the spot. Give John a ring and pick his brain, he's got a couple of sites in the lakes and is franchising elsewhere, was thinking of ireland but have put it hold at moment.
  19. Try these guys as well, on a good pitch in langdale nr the pub and the firewood is good. http://www.long-valley-yurts.co.uk Strangely similar site set ups for those two links
  20. What was up in the snow?, my impreza was leaving 4x4's on road tyres for dead last winter, once the snow tires went on!
  21. Any different to wear than the straight scafells? Kevlar tops might make them even stiffer, or just less likely to mold to your feet. Any experience / inside track out there?
  22. Opens fine but soon as I login it comes up with the same error message. Only on the laptop with firefox, taptalk is fine. I end up having to edit the URL as taking it back a page gets me into the loop of insanity with the same error message.
  23. You'll be seeing mine on thursday. They've made a few changes, but there are still things to watch out for.
  24. Post lottery win spending would include one of these, http://www.loglander.se/pdf/LLeng070604.pdf Would complement the oxtrac for extraction from the longer runs/drier sites.
  25. Got an 06 2.5 to replace my older one that did 12 years before the front diff went. The double cab I've got does around the 30mpg mark with a rack and bfg all rounds on. Tows the 3 ton plated max well, and does what I need to off road. Only things against mine are, price of spares and lack of lockable diffs. There is a massive difference in interiors as you go up the range, so drive what you want to buy.
