  1. Had you put the chain on the drive sprocket right ? Most likely cause.
  2. I quite liked the 441's I've used .. a smooth saw but didn't straight out like the 044 from the moment I started it up.
  3. This lads first day in the woods spent a good while showing him how to barbers chair a tree so I could leave him felling out side leaning trees but be aware of how not to do and none of them would ! got the opportunity on the end though. Another ash different day but put down to just pushing myself when I should of left it for the morning and gone for a pint.
  4. Dull chains don't help either on not so heavy leaners that you would usually not dogs tooth on... I've had a few last trees of the day especially ash at this time of year that have been almost straight and have barbers chaired because I should of gone home and sharpened the saw.
  5. Better than none !
  6. Sappie is what I prefer but tongs are better than nothing , bacho made some awesome tongs with very well shaped tips... This design is my favourite sappie though and appears also made for ochsenkopf ,Oregon the good old stubai It's light so can be used all day with out fatigue but seems to stay imbedded in timber with a fair clout and strong enough to last...tryed loads of numerous other makes from the heavier wooden handled to this all singing ochsenkopf with an apparent indestructible handle that I thought the weight would be good in hardwoods but the tip snapped in 5 mins. It's got to be down to the user but I would certainly give the stubai a look it changed my view on sappies any one who has used mine and likes there back has brought one too.

    Protos helmet

Ive just started using the technical for a while now after getting a load on special offer ,only when I'm in the woods and doing ground work but it's a lot more robust than the pfanner the visor needs re clipping very occasionally but bits don't fall off and get lost. The rain guard works well and from wearing arb lids is a novelty I don't mind being soaked and as long as the back of your necks dry I've discovered over the last few weeks. Get the pfanner trousers though can't rate them highly enough.
  8. Click on the link I posted above and then select page .. page 1 has two different outer felling dogs. I ordered parts for my 576 from them hd filter parts and outer felling dog and they all arrived within a couple of weeks.
  9. Widow maker is one that gets me , I always thought it was a dead or hung up branch that falls out and hits the faller when the tree starts moving when the back cuts finished although the Americanised version seems a widow maker is any dangerous tree.

    Protos helmet

I found the design gave me a head ache ... that also may have been because the earmuffs are so poor in protection and also liked too unattached them selves from the helmet itself involuntarily and frequently.
  11. https://mobile.twitter.com/54CaliskanT/status/844641392504852480/video/1 Abu izzadeen is still worth a google though... disgusting and should stay banged up for all time if this is what he in sites in his preaching.
  12. Check out spectrum plants web site. The plastic bushes are difficult to fit in a worn roller housing I found as well. Start here https://shop.spectrum-plant.com/default/bottom-roller-body-kit-125-150.html
  13. From experience I would just refurb/replace the lot! Trying to remove bolts from a worn roller that has never been changed is a nightmare, you might as well replace the rest of the assembly as they do break/wear out eventually. If you have the patience and a thread tapping set it may be worth it to save a few pound though but didn't think the cost of a whole kit bushes and all was well out of the way.
  14. Would not waste my time in doing any thing other than a pro sharpen and teeth check , definitely worth it.
  15. Elm looks really nice timber👍🏻
  16. Have a couple of each, as usual with stihl it has the slower pick up and possibly more torque where as the 550 is just a rev up and go Ferrari of snedding saws. Both have given no real issues with the 261's being absolutely smashed on sitka regen clearance when new and they still keep on going, I think they have had there needle bearings replaced once ! One of the other lads had a crank go within weeks with the261 and countless bearings and would never buy another ..... I would choose the husky the other operator would again replace with 261 so pick one up and see which you like better.
  17. Aye it's not about dragging brash!! in my first year all I did was ground and just climbed in my spare time and that pretty much set me for my career, watching those 3 full time climbers and occasional subby I learnt more of how to do and not how to do tree work than at any other point in my career.
  18. Ballsy fell that Don , proper stunt fell. Nice work on the sledge bill 👍🏻
  19. Back then Mick you had to do the 10 week course to get on the NC or ND course if you had no experience, there was a few lads doing the NC back then who had to do that, there ten week course was a good course back then and probably still is ,you had good tutors and learnt a lot.
  20. Really Mick? When I enrolled on mine the requirement was a minimum of 6 months work experience or a previous related course I seem to remember.
  21. That's running a business I'm afraid , probably one of the biggest battles.. Plenty of folks who have done there college stint and can talk the talk then instantly trip over when it it comes to walking the walk. Folks need a chance I know for sure ,but baby sitting to give them an opportunity to train them up and then watch them leave when they feel they have got to a good level and are worth even more money is what happens next.
  22. I think as the Lithuanian guy said above the logs are stacked for import, obviously in the countries that importing them the mark up is that great for them and the labour so cheap it's viable... in this country though it would be absolutely ridiculous the over heads are enough with out the cost of an extra 20 mins stacking per cubic metre.
