  1. That makes sense mate as it had never done that on other ascents that morning and to be fair I only had put the RW ZZ together the day before and only time on it being that morning. I think it would be a very useable combo with a bit of work time on it getting used to it , worked sweet limb walking for sure... still not a hitch though
  2. That's not going to happen , how many jobs for the boys club that is being justified by health and safety does the industry already support ... if any thing it will be an excuse to get more regulated. Look at all the BS between nptc FISA we have to jump through it has nothing to do with Europe.
  3. Thanks DMC ,With the Akimbo I didn't think it would work at all with that rope as it's a few years old and a bit swollen with debris and use ,usually climb with it on a Stirling rope it's been quite fickle recently though ...I think the nicest I've had it working was on brand new cougar with the top cam turned in one. Possibly the side screws need adjustment or tightening as it just has started becoming a pain to get off! I hadn't climbed on a hitch since I got it though and realised this morning I really miss the hitch. I do have some different springs to try on it though that I'm hoping make the difference.
  4. Depends on the employer though , you can not get on a lot of sites with out the relevant tickets these days and it will get worse , fine for back garden jobs unless an accident occurs and questions get asked.
  5. cheers breffni and Ian, would like to have had a rope runner and BDB in there as well, maybe a better comparison would be a load of devices set up up on lines suited to them. I think for me though I will always go back to the RW VT combo for why I explained. Didn't think the ZZ and RW worked well , any users opinions ?could not get a decent stride on the ascenders with it maybe a smaller tether would be better?
  6. Pfanners in bulk bags are cheaper .
  7. They don't rev like a two stroke it's all about torque.. they eat hedge cutter gear boxes too, imo they should of made the cutters more like the older 80's style over engineered ones.
  8. Beautiful day so whilst reccie climbing with Rachel to cure our hangovers thought it would be a good idea to do a comparison of a few SRT devices.. if you can stomach 9 minutes of me talking bollox and are interested in SRT it maybe worth a watch. Cheers mat. [ame] [/ame]
  9. Would say it's a bit stronger than the stiff line the only down side is you have to stretch it once off the spool so needs a bit of prep before use.. usually just tie one end to a gate unspool and go for a walk and wrap a stick around and pull as tight as you can ! If any one has an easier way please share as I need to replace soon as the current Iines been in the cube over a year and getting a bit short.
  10. Here is one http://www.treekit.com/ropes/rope-installation/throw-lines/stiffline.html I'm on this stuff at the minute and would say it's slightly better, well longer lasting for sure with the same properties for throwing and installing https://www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?category_id=283&item=3564 Definitely the best throw line I've found though.
  11. Dynema with a fishing line core is some thing you have to try.. nothing else will do now.
  12. There is bands of continuous cover around me .... some where for the squirrels to go I guess and certainly makes a change from the thousands of acres of Sitka plantations around them. One thing is they do blow if a block of Sitka near them is clear felled or the continuous cover is thinned, they seem to be the only contractors working in this part of the forest at the moment with a lot of the big contractors twiddling there thumbs waiting for the new financial year to get cracking again. Watching a newly racked thinned block of Sitka that runs up to a near by loch with great interest in the future ..it is about 20 years old and just been rack thinned with a machine. The other existing blocks are a mixture of age and species and should look good when the wind blow is cleared and new thinning done.
  13. That's a list of some quite specialised saws and cutting gear .. hopefully it resurfaces. Dan that is a something husqvarna and stihl should start doing ...maybe in the future even immobilisers could be fitted activated by a dealer if stolen.
  14. That was my first thought ,with the last pics I say your spot on.

    Trees on film

    Solo Tree Work

Are you sure ? most your comments sound like they come from being pissed. In a job like the one in the video yeah it's no bother there is no clear up...but if you dismantle a 10 tonne ash tree by your self and then spend three days clearing and dragging it through some body's huge long garden it just becomes boring... I did it for 3-4 years as I could not afford full time staff and it got me going back then but I could not do it again! Got no bother about smashing a tree down and clearing it up it's just not viable on bigger jobs or much fun or run as fluid with out the crack of working with a crew. Also I imagine in regs case he can get his chipper or trucks pretty much to the tree.. that's just not the case for most work in the UK... just for the risk of your chipper or any gear been stolen alone.

    Solo Tree Work

I used to hate lone working , found it difficult to motivate my self with out getting bored and finding any excuse to get in the pub to chat to some one... wasn't good for profit.
  19. 20 trees would be nice ! That's a lot of chokers and sliders, I would say 3-4 is realistic and then is still a ball ache and takes a bit of practice getting right... stumps, remaining trees and brash will not be kind. Get stuck in and give it a go though ,hard but enjoyable work.
  20. I'm swearing at the harvester driver right now !
  21. Alpine on a 2 tonne igland , you could get a much better winch tbh on the tractor a remote would be very handy. Usually cutting to 4m lengths for a botex. I mean that's a conservative figure for we are averaging on this job in hard woods and larch off a 45% bank, I'm thinking back to the last pine thinning job we had about two weeks on for 120 tonne , it could of been better but snow then ice and a melt turned it to shite ! Not what the client wanted really either. It's ok for low impact stuff but a smaller timber trailer would be great for the alpine on the level.

    Safety helmet

As Paul says look at getting two lids then ! I use the husky technical on the ground myself ,robust and good features and the petzl Alvio up a tree lightest by far , tried them all and that's the best combo I've found.
  23. I think this above is correct , we struggle to cut and winch a minimum of 8 t some days in your situation but like your self a lot of our customers don't want rack thinning done but as Andy says the winch is your friend you will massively struggle felling in thick stands without... don't leave home with out it and let it do the work.

    Safety helmet

Husky technical seem to be on offer every where .... not bad for £50. Any petzl lid for climbing though... I would probably just buy a petzl to be honest and use it on the ground.
