  1. 560 is running a beast now it's run in Steve with enough compression to wreck the starter pull housing on it as it's just done. Just changed the bottom carb mount as there was possibly a slight air leak and I think potentially another identified , 560 is a pita to strip but I think I could do it blind folded now !! but I would like to give your 357 another run ! Its handling a 8 pin 15" 3/8 with total authority ... I'm gonna drop my 576 at the dealers for a check up as I'm convinced it's over fuelling ... Or it's just a dog in comparison to the 560's if it's the latter you fancy having a go on that as it needs a bit of livening up ?
  2. Of course Dave there is nothing wrong with that until it brings in more legislation in training, pushes insurance up and more legislation in the work place which then effects us trying to be in business... Every other week I'm reading reports about accidents in Arb and they appear to be nearly all by apparent experts who are gardeners !!
  3. Jack of all master of none.... From personal experience they should not get involved because the work is often carried out to a poor standard and dangerously, put the ladders down eggs.
  4. I really don't know how any one can say the state of the industry is good when prices for a team of blokes have gone down and not up in 15 years and with the price of training insurance ect the golden days of tree work have long gone it appears to be a long hard slog with not much light at the end of the tunnel...... Just to cheer you all up!! .... Forestry is no better either despite there been more demand for biomass timber than ever the price per tonne in retro spect to living has not changed.
  5. Hope you have a speedy recovery mate.
  6. Thanks stu I will check him out , I've tried to watch a few u tube vids being a complete noob and only found a few educational !! Quick ash type platter /bowl that came off a small burr just finished from this morning, any constructive advice much welcome... Now it's stopped raining should get back out side !
  7. Great thanks , I'll look in to one of these I don't think the guy was in a rush but I've only just started turning stuff that I've been saving as its dry now.
  8. I would of rather he put the whole thing on one of the fire wood loads we just brought off him.. Would of rather of seen it on my mill! Luckily I did find what I think is the dead top off that tree and mill it when we moved one of the loads.
  9. Bowl saver ? I'm thinking you can get a few off them for sure.would you put them at the back of the shed for a couple of years though? I've only turned stuff that I've salvaged and left once it's dried if I've wanted to keep it.
  10. Don't work your self up j they came off a tiny wolf stem , the guy has some mill able stuff if you want I'll take pics and send them too you, it's going at £45 a tonne but there is not quite an arctic load but tbh I don't know as I've not seen it.
  11. Picked up a couple of large ones yesterday off a bloke down the pub , what's the best to do with this ? The faller wants a bowl in return for them can it be turned green or would it be better left too dry then turned. Thanks mat
  12. All day relentless ringing up for oversized stuff the processor won't touch the other is my dads slabbing saw , I won't touch them though I've got some feeling back in my hands since I stopped using 044's 460's over ten years ago and my fingers have stopped locking up , they are possibly the worse saws for anti vibes I've used , alright for the old man though as what fingers are left there is no feeling.
  13. I would not use either of my 460's on a 20"and 25" for any thing if I could help it not overly keen on my 576 on a 24" either, rung down this on a 560 today 25" timber until it was low enough to fit the gap , I would take the 576 for rigging and big lumps and the 560 for rings up too 25" 560 all day long for felling in the wood up to 395/088 size trees.
  14. On a 25" I would not know joe but it will cut 25" rings twice as fast on a 15" when the 460's on a 25" running side by side that I do know.
  15. From personal experience the above on many occasions is true!!
  16. I would not use any saws but 550's/560's... best saws I've ever used, the 560 makes a 70 cc saw redundant its that good.
  17. That's not always the case though.. But it's great when they do!
  18. Got it caught a few times Ian hollowing it out, think it's knackered now ! I suppose an excuse to get a new one.. Can you recommend any? Couple of questions what do you guys use to sharpen your tools and what sort of angles should they be at ? How often should you be sharpening during the course of making a bowl ? Any help would be great cheers , mat
  19. That makes sense ! Thanks . Was there any specific reason for the change ?
  20. Are there two types of clutch for the 550 ? One I did the other day knocked off with a combi spanner and mallet and looked like a 346 clutch the other one looked like a 560 clutch on it infact we used the 560 tool to get it off and it was a total pita thought the crank was going to bend!!
  21. Arb talk ap is great for down loading pictures .
  22. Have a lot to learn !! I'm in the north east , I'm looking at your stuff it's inspiring ! Thanks, mat
  23. Amen to that rich , sounds a great company to work for , like Dave says you have to respect the gaffer who leads from the front thoughtfully and has no qualms getting stuck in.
  24. Set my lathe up last week and made my first large bowl . It took all day so I think some where my technique is massively wrong , even bent a gouge trying to hollow it ! Gave up trying to get any real depth was scared the cracks would spread , may go back to it if I can improve my technique when I know what I'm doing but really enjoyed it any way
