I don't think this is a new thing , my first 262's only lasted year -year and a half , my first 560 lasted 800 hours before the crank case caused massive issues although it was not hammered but that resulted in a complete rebuild with new bottom end... I would like to think that now crank case issues have been sorted they should last a lot longer. . A few years in to production most faults are ironed out...the thing with the 560 every one was waiting for this new saw that promised to be the next 262 so a lot were brought I would say before the faults could of been ironed out , more were probably brought off the back of the initial run being great performers then all of a sudden every one is hitting the teething problems and there's a lot of bad press.... I've still had no major issues with day to day running apart from my first saws catastrophic failure ! But I would not run any thing else as they cut that great.

Sorry to hear that Andrew not a nice thing to go through, no rush or worries mate you just got me intrigued now.

Has any one got pics of a secondary offset base anchor?

Sorry mate my bad ! That's hefty money already though. Nearly found a coil for mine in Canada the other week but they said it may not work and was £200 ! to much of a gamble.

Did they have a matador winch tied mid way on the tree as well? I've seen my old lecturer at college show me photos of such an operation from when he worked at Kew. I never fully understood the logic of doing this in that tv program it would of cost time and money on chains and more importantly energy , I think the guy was one of those people who liked to make life hard for himself.

I didn't think there was barely any increase in weight on the 066 ? The 064 seemed a pointless saw to me I guess it was stihls answer to huskys awesome 80cc saws at the time.

A few mistakes in my opinion are fine ...some things are best learnt from experience through making mistakes especially with things like say felling , I guess though having planned escape routes and the correct tools it severely lessons the pyramid of disaster, but you don't become good at some thing with out making mistakes and gaining experience ? Again it's all well and good saying don't work if your fatigued but until you have experienced a mistake that happened first hand whilst feeling it you don't really grasp the significance of its meaning and next time say enough is enough time to pack up and go home.

I could not get on with SRT for work positioning using base anchors until watching Adams videos that made me realise how easy a pinto top tie is to set up , that was a big game changer ,It also gave me a big confidence boost as well in the system as out the corner of my eye I could always see two ends of the rope which made it feel a lot more homely after nearly 20 years of working on double ropes every day. I did reduce a very big sycamore a week or so back using base anchors though for two thirds of the crown ,the easy thing about using the base anchor once it had been cleared out a bit was I could use natural redirects to get right on the tips come down to have a cup of tea and look around to see where the next section of crown needs reducing too and pull the rope out then spend 5 mins putting another line to work the next section instead of re ascending through multiple tips as a tip tie does need to be rerouted so it's retrievable ... It was hard work pulling the rope out even on the base anchor though but I don't think it would of ever been retrievable with a tip tie.!

They are good Steve, pretty much every thing you would expect from a merino base I guess , if you can find one at the right price go for it,would buy another for sure.
