  1. Just found this one in Germany Look at this on eBay Absolute Rarität! Sachs-Dolmar 166 extra
  2. Did they have a matador winch tied mid way on the tree as well? I've seen my old lecturer at college show me photos of such an operation from when he worked at Kew. I never fully understood the logic of doing this in that tv program it would of cost time and money on chains and more importantly energy , I think the guy was one of those people who liked to make life hard for himself.
  3. I didn't think there was barely any increase in weight on the 066 ? The 064 seemed a pointless saw to me I guess it was stihls answer to huskys awesome 80cc saws at the time.
  4. It could be a mill for cutting shingles looking at that plank
  5. A few mistakes in my opinion are fine ...some things are best learnt from experience through making mistakes especially with things like say felling , I guess though having planned escape routes and the correct tools it severely lessons the pyramid of disaster, but you don't become good at some thing with out making mistakes and gaining experience ? Again it's all well and good saying don't work if your fatigued but until you have experienced a mistake that happened first hand whilst feeling it you don't really grasp the significance of its meaning and next time say enough is enough time to pack up and go home.
  6. They look great!
  7. Looks alright for an entry hobby mill if it does not go for much more.
  8. Is it a spruce growing out a cavity ??
  9. Do you have any pictures or diagrams so I can get a grip of what your describing better Andrew? I need visual aids to get things down being a bit dense and all
  10. I could not get on with SRT for work positioning using base anchors until watching Adams videos that made me realise how easy a pinto top tie is to set up , that was a big game changer ,It also gave me a big confidence boost as well in the system as out the corner of my eye I could always see two ends of the rope which made it feel a lot more homely after nearly 20 years of working on double ropes every day. I did reduce a very big sycamore a week or so back using base anchors though for two thirds of the crown ,the easy thing about using the base anchor once it had been cleared out a bit was I could use natural redirects to get right on the tips come down to have a cup of tea and look around to see where the next section of crown needs reducing too and pull the rope out then spend 5 mins putting another line to work the next section instead of re ascending through multiple tips as a tip tie does need to be rerouted so it's retrievable ... It was hard work pulling the rope out even on the base anchor though but I don't think it would of ever been retrievable with a tip tie.!
  11. Get some more pics of that rig up Tom it looks great !
  12. How is the regrowth rate on the ones you did at the start of this thread David ? Have any declined further?
  13. Made a very nice job of it too
  14. They are good Steve, pretty much every thing you would expect from a merino base I guess , if you can find one at the right price go for it,would buy another for sure.
  15. I put one in the truck today .... Some how I've not done it for a while though but a month back I ended up with every thing from my climbing saw 560 and 576 would not cut straight no file guide in the box, ... Have not used a guide for a couple of years , should get some reading glasses !
  16. Another option we did try but I'm not disciplined enough to sharpen the awkward or blunt ones unless the saw is wearing it.. I could try getting some specs so I can see the cutters better I guess !
  17. I would not dismiss it entirely , I'm having a problem with filling too much hook on my cutters when tired and wet at the minute and debating getting a grinder or one of these now I've seen one too keep my chains in check every 5-6 sharpens. I like a nice clean deep hook on the cutters but it can cause too much trouble in wrong conditions or wood.
  18. Couple of days trying to sort out a mess!! I guess maybe was left for a stroke processor /delimber that never arrived ?? any way I've always wanted to say to the winch wench ,sorry my love I could not resist !
  19. Very tidy site !! I wish the bomb site I've been on trying to clear others felling was the same !
  20. Is it much quicker than hand filing ? Looks an interesting option. Any chance of some pics of a finished cutter?
  21. I found the easiest way to inflame tennis elbow was use a saw one handed , climb on a Prussik and split wood with an axe or bang in wedges... The axe though really was the main issue....and miles and miles of one handing cut n chuck in conifer hedges.
  22. Not sure if they would be big enough as the trees are quite small still, I'm not a bat expert but I've only seen them in much larger cavities ... There was some nice natural habitat in the older growth though, plenty evidence of woodpeckers and nesting.
  23. A little thinning job on a shelter belt of aspen and alder and oak on the out skirts of ancient woodland in the Northumbria national park this morning. Asked to leave the site messy and not in neat stacks so we did but also selected 5 or six of the larger trees like this ....coronets and false cavities for nesting birds. Most of the trees we ring barked to varying degrees to kill or slow down regrowth leaving one intact to see what the results would be. The tops came in handy for hopefully trying to keep deer off the hazels being coppiced for the first time as well.. Will be interesting to visit the site in a year or so's time and see if the trees have any new habitants.
  24. Yale kern or cougar blue on 8 MM armour prus , armour prus is pretty good as you will burn out cord quick and it's the toughest I've found any way!
  25. I get you now mate. 12 stone mark?? Too much turkey ruined that for me !
