  1. Decay may not be too bad, originally the tree looked as bad if not worse as the OPs picture, I think because the trees are young and vigour-is high the wounds compartmentalise really well but It is still is no substitute for proper formative pruning at a young age but it should give the tree a chance if a management plan is put in place to keep or replant and remove once it's replacement has established.
  2. Ha ha ,I always thought that as well Steve , that's why I took the photos and sent them to some of the contractors who might deal with it and told one of them to address that the tree does need pruning as every one else probably has no idea there is 2 rods holding that union together. The tree was supposed to of had a replacement planted that winter and felled around now but the council never did plant another , my guess is it will still fail again in the not far future the crowns getting big now.. Surprisingly usually Chestnut and metal don't react well , but it's completely callused over. No other bracing Jake, at the time it didn't need it... ironically it's one of the only aesculus in the area not to of been ravaged by bleeding canker.
  3. You could rod brace it ,did this about 12 years ago to this that was in a similar state It's about due a tip thin now.
  4. I don't like the idea much either but have never got it caught just found it the least restrictive , you don't even know it's there. The fluidity thing comes though but don't know if I will be as fluid as the VT and rope guide as we are older than when we got on that like .. Just a lot less knackered at the end of the day. Big swings ,There is another thing that is a lot easier on a single rope , I recon the future SRT climbers will be doing mad things , work climb records at comps will be smashed and some crazy videos !
  5. Not used the mechanical advantage systems mate , thought they just looked a faff to set up , like to keep the system as simple as possible , I've found in big open crowns the tail of the rope just pulls through any slack if I clip on the neck tether up for coming in and if there is not the weight in the rope it's still easy to pull the slack though you just move faster as your not pulling in double the rope.
  6. Same as Joe,It's all about setting the system so it self tends or making it easy to self tend using the harness or as I found the neck tether to get the most out the system. Coming in off a 2 .1 system is pretty different but I actually find the single line easier now once you get used to it.
  7. Spikes with a pantin work a treat though! I had to mod the kiwi climber before I could get on with it , it kicked out worse than the new pantins
  8. First time I tried a take down SRT it put me off for a couple of years from using the rope wrench again ! , tbh mate the best climbs I recon to get used to and sus out the system are big dead woods , you suddenly get to realise the ease of access and limb walking redirect after doing a few , I if you have spent your whole tree work career on a Ddrt system you have to pretty much re learn climbing to a degree which I guess when your production climbing you just don't have the time to do... It didn't just click like climbing on a VT did it was more a gradual thing where you realise one day doing a reduction, fell or dead wood ddrt it was actually easier SRT... That's how it worked for myself any way.
  9. I was just looking at those pumps , I naively thought if I just kept on pumping with the foot pump it would feed the chamber with a decent pressure! Looks like the answer. Tom talks about using a 12g gas cartridge Ben, that sounds interesting, but can find nothing further on the net about using cartridges to fire the APTA
  10. What are folks using to power up there launchers and what PSI with what weights? I have only played with it but my findings are.....a double cylinder powered foot pump will only achieve around 90psi a compressor will easily achieve around 160psi and that seems ok for the high shots required.. So there has to be a better way of achieving more air pressure? A constant 150-170 would be good.
  11. My 576 became gutless after a filter clean on a job, would not run right at all... I changed the fuel filter which made a little difference but was under warrantee ,The dealer told me they reset the auto tune and that was all it needed and has ran fine since , it's a lovely saw but that knocked my confidence in it and out of the 6 saws I have with auto tune it's the only one to have played up.
  12. Nicely done, made me miss having access to a truck mounted cherry picker.
  13. I saw some deep orange and reds under the green Hume but could not work out if it was Otterburn burning ! sounds like lots of big guns going off tonight.
  14. Thanks for the offer J , I doubt I would get that stick back on the trailer it has already gone through the bottom and the drive to Edinburgh would be a night mare it was bad enough on the country back roads ! If I can get some more over size stuff that's too big for my lumber mate I may try and organise a wagon up to you, I have some over sized burr lime and straight oak that's too good for fire wood that I would like to do but I'm not sure my mill is up to doing large hard woods.
  15. Same as Stevie a green glow ,nice walk out any way. Got any photos tom?
  16. Nice to see a climber not using the rigging poles as a tip as well, some thing I see a lot of tree workers do and always makes me cringe especially on old hacked about trees.. I would be wary though about using static lines as rigging anchors though , that is exerting a lot of force on the stems, I think if I had the ground staff I would of been inclined to double rig of each side and you can go a lot bigger on the bits your taking off but it looks like it worked really well on that job you did.. Nice one.
  17. It's ok , it's had a few issues like I don't think any of the bolts or hoses were tightened in the factory but it does the job, it won't lift big timber but will drag stuff in then lift it closer like most of the smaller cranes ,the 560 would be a better crane for Arb work. I did like the massive wheels and clearances on the vreten especially after getting stuck a few times last week this may have been avoided.. I've Seen quite a few vreten In FMS's yard they looked well built and with the right clearances for work in boggy ground....have heard nothing negative about them before talking to users , I've got to say if you had brought it from FMS they would of done every thing possible to make it work and help if you had problems, I've never known a company go out there way more to be helpful.
  18. If I had the money ...these vreten set ups look amazing But the botex 360 will have to do for now.
  19. How are you doing Adam , are your injuries recovering from time out or are you still climbing ?
  20. We put some on this year it's done the job quite well but torn to shreds in places and will be useless for next year. Lorry tarps are good but not big enough to cover a whole stack unless it's just one load. Another thing is whilst we covered a. Stack of beech and sycamore sticks that were already 3 years old some of the uncovered stuff the same age did not go mouldy as bad and dries just as quick when processed and put undercover, but it always seems to go mouldy if processed when wet so cutting has to be done in a dry window.
  21. Clever process I guess makes all the molecules shrink and bind ...Beyond my understanding of physics but it's bloody clever.
  22. Cool , looks a good day out Ian. It would be interesting to see how they get ridiculous strength out of the tiny accessory krabs ! Think they are one of my favourite inventions at the moment for clipping on working SRT accessories.
  23. Wages should be more ,they are the same as they were 20 years ago unfortunately there are plenty of have a go gardeners who will do it for beer tokens with there mate whilst having no idea of the best industry guidelines and practices and doing us all a massive favour boosting accident statistics then making it harder for every one else trying to run a legitimate business with more rules and regulations being applied as a direct result. More training, more insurance it's hard for bosses to keep wages what they should be I guess...
  24. Your not using the 25m rope off the side D's ?? The wire rope for positioning off the D's as well as in conjunction with the 25m rope off the main attachment should be fine... I've never heard of it being wrong !
  25. A family friends father has got a farm in alnmouth with holiday lets , they are basic and on a working farm but cheap let me know if you fancy going back there and I'll pm you the guys details I recon you will need to book in advance as It gets busy over there that time of year.
