Great article Tom, which raises some interesting issues that do need to be addressed, especially with regards to the use of lesser quality biomass for fuel. There has to be a shift towards it at some point, as we cannot just rely on virgin timber for all our future chip needs.

The hood keeps your neck warm & out of the wind & is not constrictive like a scarf or similar. I try & always get a jacket with one

Climbing without an effective aerial rescue climber or climbing without any - no difference IMHO Not many could rescue anyone in decent time so just plan for the worst. I often climb with just brash draggers onsite - not ideal but needs must

If you employ someone to do a specific task, what do you expect? Certainly not argument, refusal to work or complaint. If you feel that strongly then perhaps carefully & respectfully discuss your opinion over lunch. Then back to the task at hand straight afterwards

I am a fan of grundens wear - very tough. I really like the gauge jacket - it takes everything that I can throw at it, but like most she'll jackets it condenses badly inside in really heavy rain

If you lock the holding arm straight, then you massively reduce effort whilst tending slack. Rock climbers "rest" in the arms locked position as it relies on the skeleton etc as opposed to muscle usage

I cut my arm up a tree, lacerating an artery & I can guarantee, that if I had not got myself out of the tree asap, then I would be dead - no-one could have helped me in time imho !

Did you say the same about new fangled pneumatic tires on your push iron, power steering on your truck & the move from hemp ropes Neophobia is detrimental to your performance & health, end of. (Not a personal attack in any way)

If you are concerned about fibre continuity & straightness then do you set your face further into the stem? At a typical 1/4 or 1/5th they are not likely to be parallel & consist of mainly sapwood, unless of course you cut the buttresses off the front also! Another point on fibre pull is that a buttress root will pull out of the ground as opposed to a cleaned up stem, which will pull upwards into the timber potentially devaluing it. Not criticising, just my observations

Ian, how does it help when felling a tree with a full crown? I see no advantage I, when cutting commercially or felling in Arb work, just fell the tree, often utilising the buttresses & if the timber needs to be presented take them off afterwards.

The timber was not a problem, although I did lack some fluency in my climbing removing the crown. I think it was compensated for with my increased stamina though, as I had no issues with a couple of 6hr plus days in the tree

Was let out of the woods to do some contract climbing this week. Old beech with decay to remove. The crown was done last week
