  1. I cut my arm up a tree, lacerating an artery & I can guarantee, that if I had not got myself out of the tree asap, then I would be dead - no-one could have helped me in time imho !
  2. Did you say the same about new fangled pneumatic tires on your push iron, power steering on your truck & the move from hemp ropes Neophobia is detrimental to your performance & health, end of. (Not a personal attack in any way)
  3. It's a smallish domestic job
  4. Anyone in the area? If so please PM me with your contact details. Thanks in advance Pete
  5. If you are concerned about fibre continuity & straightness then do you set your face further into the stem? At a typical 1/4 or 1/5th they are not likely to be parallel & consist of mainly sapwood, unless of course you cut the buttresses off the front also! Another point on fibre pull is that a buttress root will pull out of the ground as opposed to a cleaned up stem, which will pull upwards into the timber potentially devaluing it. Not criticising, just my observations
  6. Ian, how does it help when felling a tree with a full crown? I see no advantage I, when cutting commercially or felling in Arb work, just fell the tree, often utilising the buttresses & if the timber needs to be presented take them off afterwards.
  7. Nice truck Reg - congrats. With the through pipe I bet it sounds as good as it looks
  8. Nice view, where are you today?
  9. The timber was not a problem, although I did lack some fluency in my climbing removing the crown. I think it was compensated for with my increased stamina though, as I had no issues with a couple of 6hr plus days in the tree
  10. Was let out of the woods to do some contract climbing this week. Old beech with decay to remove. The crown was done last week
  11. Nice pics of my part of the world. I only live 10 mins from Danby
  12. Why ?
  13. Great pics Reg. looks different with the sun shining
  14. The natanoko & gomtaro are not supposed to be sharpened, as they are impulse hardened in the manufacturing process. Some I, like the sugoi & ibuki are not & can be. I use a feather file from silky. However, as stated previous it maybe possible with a diamond file to sharpen other blades
  15. If the rescuer is competent, how about stepping up a level? Shout, scream & abuse the rescuer. Get the victim to lunge at the, pull there ropes & grab them. In real life, it is going to be a horrible & stressful event & in my opinion providing a stressful & unpleasant environment is an essential part of the training.
  16. Sycamore is a top notch firewood. Seasons quite quickly, easily split when green & burns well.
  17. Rapeseed oil from the supermarket. Just gotta turn the oiler up a bit, but at £1 per litre, not a problem. I do have some of Clarkes bio oil that I save for the 660 - helps on the 3ft bar
  18. Sounds like bogies & snot with added minty flavour - how could anyone even consider eating that ! (guts churning thinking about it)
  19. I disagree Jon. When run in & with a nice sharp chain a 66 will happily run with a 36" bar. If you wanted to run it cross cutting all day, everyday then the 88 will certainly last longer, although the fuel bill might be a little steep.
  20. Branston beans, good wholemeal bread covered with butter & marmite. Black pepper & grate a load of cheese on top & you have a top feed
  21. Interesting read Tom. I usually say I do tree work, when asked, as I find labels are restrictive in some ways. I never found a term that suited me better than climber & cutter.
  22. Varitrack is much more than width. The independent vertical movement of each track is about levelling too, which is essential for not only safe feeding the machine, but also helps access places that you would never dream of taking a normal machine.
  23. Poor since January - back working in the woods. There seems a definite downturn, especially in the domestic market
