  1. I prefer the page in Tree Climbers Companion where he explains how to use a wheelbarrow as a very comfortable reclining seat at break time, genius.
  2. Was a great half hr sitting there with the dog. Lizard basking next to me, a butterfly, bumble bee, and a treecreeper in the wood behind the wall. Amazing how the sun does that. No pics of the creeper unfortunately, they always know the back of a tree!
  3. Had a little companion at the wood yard today, sunbathing on the wall beside me at lunch.
  4. I don't understand the post fully, seems complicated. If he's paid you in full for the work you've already done, and you've paid him the agreed price for the repairs, and you have the paperwork to prove it, then just decline any further work... The forgotten saw or him possibly using your receipt fraudulently in the future, all irrelevant.
  5. I know several people that have signed up to offer accommodation, there's a distinct sense that the Ukrainians are in need of temporary sanctuary and will want to return home asap, whereas previously the feeling has been that people trying to get to UK were hoping to come permanently.
  6. When you say worst that could happen... I was thinking that's probably the more acceptable possible outcome. How about if the compromised tree fails while you have rope/lanyard attached. I remember a thread here suggesting everything from breakaway attachments between harness and lanyard, to using no stopper knot. Your keen John but I think the best advice you've had is you would benefit most from watching someone else do it. The leaner from your other thread (Birch isn't it?) sounds like a big step as it is.
  7. It seems the longer this invasion goes on the more inept Putin and the Russian military appear. They've made themselves look pretty amateur. It says a lot they can't even supply the basics to some troops in a neighbouring country for a few weeks.
  8. No, you clearly stated your brother had moved to Scotland to be a big deal in the building industry, creaming in money from little jobs by charging more than anyone else could due to his excellence. Your fledgling log business is more a charity for the workless brother. Well done Britney, another untruth crumbles.
  9. Is he not doing as much of the lucrative building work at the moment? I don't follow why you mock the concept of arb workers having job satisfaction but claim to have it in spades yourself. Incidentally, there's a couple of young lads at work that came to arb from supermarket delivery jobs. They probably earn slightly less for now, but their work is rewarding, less stressful, healthier, and they claim to be enjoying life much more. Loving what they do is a big deal to some folk Andy.
  10. Green eyed monster is everywhere then!
  11. I don't know if other trades have this confusion or it's just Arb, but I'm surprised at how often employed, self employed, sub contractors etc are mixed up. I've often heard employed guys moaning about being underpaid compared to the subbies but many don't recognise the cost of ppe, training, time off etc as being part of what they earn.
  12. Ok, to answer the question, yes i would work for less than Mark suggested (as an employee, maybe not if taking jobs as an actual subcontractor which is what he referred to). I think the level of earning has much more value to you than I. As long as I earn "enough" then I rate my lifestyle, time with loved ones etc as being more important. I'm mortgage free, had a private pension since I started work at 17, and couldn't be happier with what I do for work. Lot more to life than just earning more...
  13. I was being facetious. To be fair, I don't earn what you do and never will, but I'm not selling myself short either. Love my job and happy with what I get for doing it, I'm very well looked after.
  14. The OP did specifically ask about wages for employees.
  15. Go on then, I'll give your ego it's required boost. Yes Andy, I'll do an 11hr day for 80 quid gratefully. As an unqualified, inexperienced, over the hill waster that is basically a glorified gardener, the only way I can get the work that a 20yr old does is undercut them on price and drag brash quicker. Won't always be this way though, I aspire to one day spend my time away from my loved ones, being a really important employee on a platform in the sea. Maybe even get a wee blankie at Christmas to make up for not being with the family, then I'll have made it in life. Seriously though, I know you struggle to grasp it, but I'm doing the job I love, I'm good at it, respected by my colleagues and secure in my position. Even earn enough money to be happy, I'm doing fine thanks.
  16. Now now Andy, your Daddy issues are about to bubble to the surface again, don't do a Britney today
  17. Surely Mark was joking/wishful thinking...
  18. Spent 3 peaceful and rewarding days removing Willow saplings from a stream bed. Just two of us, waders and chains with Thom using the crane. Really enjoyed being down in the water, Ducks watching with interest and lots of minnows round my feet. Added a few members to the Valtra fan club as well.
  19. Really hard to deal with J, take heart in knowing her time with you gave her a great life.
  20. Maybe leave the stump high and put a fairy door on it, depending on the age of kids
  21. Be interesting to hear his reaction to what you've said...
  22. Your neighbour won't appreciate it Khriss, far better throw it over my fence!
  23. Oh dear. As always we're a bit behind the South so we'll have that to look forward to, think we're around 1.52 here for diesel just now
  24. I was under the impression that they had to charge according to what the batch in their tanks cost them to buy in, so the price at pump would rise when the forecourt took a new delivery. Has that changed or was I mistaken?
  25. There you go. Conor, the voice of experience favours a thermos to defeat the dinosaur ancestor!
