So I got a call from the contractors wife, She's saying they might have to tax me at source??? Because I'm felling on a construction site. I'm self employed, have been since 2013. Worked for loads of different companies. Never heard this before. Anyone?

Just a saw and a couple of wedges if it's large. Big gob cut, big big hinge then back cut, leaving extra wood on the side. 90 degrees yes. 91+degrees only with a winch. Apparently 8feet up the tree from the winch anchor height is the absolute minimum for leverage. Obviously the higher you go the more leverage. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Why not just use a standard gob cut to get the tree 90degrees from lean? I do this regularly.

I've done a few months for Bob, and I can honestly say it was and honour and an education. You couldn't ask for a better boss, he actually listens to his staff and takes ideas onboard. [emoji3][emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Listen to the engine, it should sing about 10-11krpm. Any higher or lower and it's not helping the saw. You shouldn't need to push hard, just gently guide the mill along. Avoid seesawing try keep the saw and mill 90degrees to the trunk. With really gnarly lumpy irregular trunks it's more difficult. Also once past midway I find the vertical depth bar likes to jam into soft bark and sapwood, so heaving it out and along can leave marks. Having every tooth and depth gauges set on a grinder really helps to keep vibrations down and cut smoothly. I've heard good reports about hyper skip but I've not tried it yet. Also if you haven't' already get several different size ratchet spanners. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Depends on your power head. I use .404 standard full chisel cross cutting chain from stihl, then I grind it to 0degrees for the 880 This gives the cleanest finish I've tried. Also use standard 3/8 full chisel from stihl ground to 0degrees on my 661. 10-15 degrees gives a faster cut but more chatter so more lines and deeper on surface. For me personally I'm after a clean finish for clients. Depth gauges are so important with milling. Different heights for different densities and widths. Is it just me or was that a load of bollocks??? Lower hinge had no effect, tree fell in direction of gob cut. Might of worked with a partial humbolt? [emoji52][emoji52][emoji52]

My parents cat is a prolific killer of all small wildlife. Multiple kills everyday. However it has strange rules. If it's inside the house, he won't lift a whisker. Which was a particular problem when a large brown rat stayed for a few months one winter. "Rodney" would pop out at all times of day and night, the cat would completely ignore it. One spring day the rat left.

My 461 owners manual states 30" bar. Relieved to hear the 462 can pull a useful bar. [emoji106]

Why will stihl only recommend a 20" bar? When the 440 would pull 25" and the 461 30". It's probably an emissions thing?

Yep the 441 was crap. Any spud ported saws will wipe the floor with a stock saw. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106][emoji3]

What will you use it for? As a capstan is for lowering. I use a tirfor for pulling trees over. -
Checked in my local stihl dealer this morning. Max recommended bar is 20". But hey I can run a 36" bar on my 261. [emoji848][emoji57][emoji12] The 461 (76cc) will pull a 30" bar happily. Yet the 462 (70cc) is only 10% smaller engine and takes a bar 10" less. These are stihl recommendations.

Since they finally sorted the teething problems with the needle cage etc they are my go to saw. 261 2"dogs 18" bar 16" cutting length. Great little ripper. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] I did my cs32 two weeks ago. Only been felling up to 50" trees for twelve years now. I hate short bars personally. Nothing more frustrating than have to fell 2-3' trees with a 15-20" bar and spend ages ringing up from both sides. But often that's more down to employers bad planning. I worked in a forest in France for years, Over stood chestnut coppice12-20" and 30"+ oaks. Ms440 25" bar, a tad unbalanced, but would cope with nearly anything. It did fail on the 60"+ oak trunks. Can anyone actually confirm what nptc301 (cs32) limitations are? Is it 760 or unlimited. I've heard and read many conflicting opinions.

What trees are you felling? Softwood up to 15" stihl 261 Medium hard wood 15-25" Stihl 461 Big wood stihl 661 [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106] The 462 is underpowered for a 70cc saw. It won't pull a 25" bar, where as a 440 would. The 500i has a low chain speed in the wood 10krpm. Yes they are both light, but they run 20" bars. I run 18" bar on my 261. [emoji848] Worked with nearly every modern husky and I can honestly say they are slightly faster than a stihl but they are unreliable. I need a saw which works every time. As for bar length slowing the speed of cut, it's almost negligible. About 1% slower per extra inch. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

If you can find the nest, An old saw with no bar and a very oily petrol mix. Full revs produces a very nasty cloud, aimed down rat hole. Then you watch the terriers work.

I taught my two kittens to catch mice etc. Catch two live small mice. Take one kitten and say mouse! Mouse! Mouse! In an excited way. The kitten will pick up on your vibe. Drop live mouse in front of kitten. As long as the mouse stays still the kitten will just stare and sniff. As soon as the mouse legs it, kittens innate predator comes out. Say the word "mouse" to kitten later, it remembers and gets excited, starts sniffing about. Within a couple of weeks our mouse problem had gone. [emoji106] I can vouch for peanut butter as rat bait. + .22 air rifle [emoji106]

Warning! If you cut 1inch over the boundary you are liable for trespass and criminal damage. Even 20 feet off the ground. Be especially careful if the fence isn't on the legal boundary. [emoji51][emoji51][emoji51]
