  1. AustralianBurls.com - Current Inventory of Gimlet Burl Crikey, I just found some prices on the Gimlet Burls, and yes I think this is a positive ID. S.
  2. A recent study out of the University of Nebraska, the Harvard School of Public Health and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center shows that pot smokers, on average, have smaller waists and higher levels of "good cholesterol" than non pot smokers even though they tend to eat more. Finally, a diet plan that's fun and effective!
  3. He`s good, not been beaten yet
  4. Paul HANNABY came up with Here's a pic of what I think is the same wood. I was told by a reliable source in Australia that this is gimlet burr (eucalyptus salubris). The black "coal" is resin deposits. I still have a few pieces of this in my wood store waiting for me to turn them! Which seems to fit in with your observations Steve
  5. Has anyone any suggestions on this wood. It turned well and has what can only be described as coal in the inclusions, I think it is a slice of a burl but have no idea as it came in a job lot and was very dry so been around a while. Looks very nice and would like to put a species to it? Stuart
  6. A good slow speed grinder with a white wheel, and if you can a sharpening jig for repeatable grinds is quick and effective, its all I have ever used. Have a holiday on the Broads and drop in for a play.
  7. Welcome to the club..... Get quality tools and keep them sharp, makes life much easier, when you can, visit someone who can turn, may save a lot of the learning curve initially. S.
  8. I often use the "cheap" ones just keep a diamond file on hand to touch up the edges, they haven't failed me yet and as stated cheap to replace. S.
  9. cocaine, ketamine, crack, smack. See lots of humans with similar symptoms around their nasal area
  10. Sounds like he`s only human, if the rest of his work ethic and attitude are good maybe just some "stiff words of advice" hopefully he will learn from that and keep his respect for the boss. If he isn't a good employee well, whys he there?
  11. Think it has a lot to do with the water based paints now used on cars, not as hard wearing as the 2 pack that was used.
  12. Buy the best quality tools you can afford, I use almost exclusively Robert Sorby. You only need a basic set to get going but make sure they are quality, and a sharpening system to. Have a look on the AWGB web site its full of great advice. Also you Tube has some good videos try Lyle JAMIESON he is one of my favorites. Fruit wood is great to turn, I turn most things green to finished size then leave to dry, the thin walls will warp but it adds to the design, but fruit wood is a pig for splitting. Try and find a reputable local turner to visit, we are a friendly bunch.
  13. I to have a good quality angle poise on the lathe head stock, the VB has convenient mounting holes in the main casting for just that job. I also have a portable work lamp which I can position where ever and when ever it is needed. I did have a problem on my last lathe with fluorescent lights as at one speed the lathe was in synch with the lights and it acted like a timing light on a car and made the spindle look stationary, very weird. Natural light is definitely the best though as Steve said move it to, or insert a window where the lathe is and a sky light to if you can, I think all electric lighting causes fatigue if you are turning for long periods. S.
  14. Have a mooch on the web and make sure spares are available I believe they are no longer available so a good look over your potential purchase for wear and tear may be prudent. Bearings should be ok but if the inverter or similar has problems may be a expensive fix. S.
  15. Sounds ideal, many thanks. S.
  16. Its more the ID of the female as this is were all the bits will be put, if its too small there will be no access for storage, I guess an 25mm dia hole would be about right as the overall diameter is 2" (50mm)
  17. I am going to make a few Hobo fishing reels on the lathe but can anyone suggest where I can get a suitable brass insert to allow storage in the reel and handle. I cant be cutting threads in the wood itself, and need a reasonable sized center hole to allow storage of weights, lures hooks etc. S.
  18. What about one of the moticing attachments in a pillar drill, I got one with mine and its a handy gadget and the few times I have used it the results have been good. If the timber is large you would need a suitable support of course. Cheap and cheerful if your drill press is man enough.......

If you have a local carver they pay a premium for it!
  20. Ivor the engine of Norfolk, that's me:001_tongue:
  21. Thumbs up for vaping, started a year ago and never touched a fag since, can be great fun if you like tinkering and building your own coils and mixing juices. Currently chuffing with a raspberry cheesecake flavor...... smooth creamy and little if any toxins compared to tobacco. Smells better to.
