  1. Depends in my experience on the caliber and quality of the unit. Very useful when you first attach a scope, allows you to see if mounts need shimming to give a true center line on the scope before the final zeroing. Always good to have a gadget though. Boys Toys.......
  2. I use mine for axe and knives, being slow speed it does not heat the steel unless you really go for it, really use it for turning tools only, very happy with it but that may be a personal preference, or I am just used to it. However a linisher would be a good option to. S.
  3. Liquidized cat foot peanut butter or chocolate spread put at your preferred zero range, little bu**ers cant pick it up and run with it so you get plenty of time for the head shot. Leave the body and the others will come for that to, you can get quite a pile in a short while.
  4. Tru oil is brilliant stuff but tends to go off in the bottle if not used up. Danish oil is a simple to use quality finish to. S.
  5. Oh and all my tools are Sorby apart from the hollowing tools and Steve is spot on some woods are like steel, but I bow to his knowledge of the names Lol.
  6. I use one of these with the Robert Sorby universal jig. Fast accurate and repeatable grinds, takes seconds is all. S.
  7. Hi, you may not be aware that there are a couple of threats to our sport looming. The first is an EU proposal to change the gun ownership laws, this would ban all semi-automatic sporting weapons, internet sale of firearms and components etc. The second threat originates in the UK where Defra is bending to pressure to impose a total ban on lead shot. Two online petitions are being run to try to put pressure on the relevant authorities to prevent these bans happening. Links to both are below, please sign these petitions and forward to any other interested party. Gunlaws, Bit.ly/gunbanpetition UK Lead shot ban Bit.ly/leadshotpetition Just highlight the link then right click on mouse and click on to go to Bit.ly/**********
  8. How to build a storage shed, instructions and details...
  9. Bit sticky...... How about a bronze brush on a drill or grinder and give it a polish, less friction and will look good if it rolls.........
  10. I would get it dipped if not too much to strip down and use Hammerite green, either smooth or hammer finish, similar to British racing green. It is used on the castings of my lathe by the manufacturer and tough as old boots and easy to touch up if required.
  11. Who says books are out of fashion in the digital age, Kindle wouldn't create much heat.....
  12. Try "Shendy" I think he is milling some Yew imminently.
  13. Here on the Norfolk broads we have had a spate of poisoned ground bait put out to poison the otters, presumably by a minority of less than scrupulous anglers. This has been eaten by domestic dogs and cats with the obvious results.........
  14. Axminster power tools, good range but not the cheapest.
  15. Yes Steve is right, end grain turning is very limited. I have tried deep hollowing on many woods end grain on, nearly always splits. Shame as would make getting good sized blanks much easier. Stuart
  16. I have a couple of Japanese type saws, excellent. However I think like all tools you get what you pay for being it traditional Japanese or western, the other thought is buy a cheap but accurate hardened disposable and just replace when the edge goes???
  17. You can reinforce the crack with thin cyno glue, let it dry before you turn the lathe on though. Or maybe carve or shape it after turning the bowl. Just wear full face protection as walnut can be very punky and I have has one or two fly apart when you reach a weak spot and the strength goes in the whole structure. If you are at all unsure take it off the lathe, we all have this frugal gene which means we want to make the biggest bowl from the piece of wood, but, you can waste a bit, after all it does grow on trees!!!!!!!!
  18. Has anyone on here tried this yet? If so what size Neon transformer would be best? Decided not to use Microwave MOT as too risky! Stuart
  19. Try contacting FARM WATCH, Tony BONE has some great experience and suppliers for the protection of farm buildings etc Farmwatch Ltd
  20. Found some of these in a walnut log that I was turning, made a hell of a mess at 1800 rpm when the gouge found them. I thought they were witchetty grubs lol. Left some interesting features in the bowls though from their munching, and some unusual staining on the wall and ceiling........
  21. Bless ya....... if it comes to fruition will send you some pics. I need to sort the jig etc so it will be ready for the pub garden in the Spring. Thanks again
