  1. I've always found it annoying when a groundy doesn't know how to rig, especially when you need the piece to run for safety reasons. But like previously said a bollard is a good idea, also slings and big dans to make it simple at their end and speed things up a bit. If a job is looking to dangerous without someone with experience rigging it should be called off. I've always liked wraps around the trunk if the tree is coming down, and you can't get simpler than that :-).
  2. Hi Sean, I think this is a great idea. Maybe look at possible alternatives that would make countryside walks more accessible for the disabled. I'll pm you and I would be keen to help you out if you'd like.
  3. On suitable punishment I think a good rollocking would suffice. If it happens again it's the sack. Everyone is human at the end of the day.
  4. I was going out for a big night out with my mates many moons ago and was working the Saturday before hand on a construction site. I met the Forman to let me and the lads in in the morning and swapped numbers incase of any issues. Got a phone call the next morning saying there was a saw there and he hid it in a bin, so me feeling very hungover the misses drove me down to pic it up, my own 260, not the bosses luckily. Phoned him back and told him I had popped a bottle of whisky in the bin where the saw was for him. Restores your faith in humanity and I don't rush from site anymore, probably because I don't go out drinking like I used to (just back to the little ones tantrums now), in fact I take ages to leave site or the yard nowadays. Funny that 😐
  5. I've always used a flat file and nothing else. Works well for me but I'm going to try taking a stone to them as well now.
  6. Interesting, surely someone on here will be able to bring up information on this hearsay.
  7. I thought sycamore and maple make the best chopping boards due to there natural antiseptic qualities. I may be wrong, just what I have heard, can anyone back this up? Personally I would avoid avoid yew or laburnum. Even if it was safe I wouldn't trust it.
  8. Positive thinking is a good thing and in a team it can really raise Morale. But I believe to make success is more to do with bloody hard work, smile or not. I have to agree with Joe as well. Sometimes you just have to get angry (obviously not around the customer). I do think as a team leader that getting peed off is part of the job, if the guys are messing about and being lazy buggers or newbies are putting themselves at risk you need to get shouty. I spend most my working time calm and relaxed with a 'come on lads lets get this last bit done, we are on the home stretch' attitude. But some times it's the complete opposite. I think positive attitude is a great thing but I think people often mistake a positive attitude for a passion for the job, I often hear people say you have a real positive attitude but I'm just thinking no I just bloody love climbing big trees. Hope this makes sense, but I'm sure it was more like a load of rambling.
  9. I Like that one mate, looks almost like it could go on canvas on a wall.
  10. Goat willow maybe?
  11. Going to head up one of the days but to hectic to camp over at the moment.
  12. Give it a good push at the base if it moves from that then I'd say it's MEWP time. If not go up slow and steady, you'll know if something doesn't feel right if you've been climbing a while. Personally I like to take top weight out as soon as possible (makes it feel a little safer). As said before try and keep the tree balanced as much as possible when working. Oh and avoid rigging anything because that's when things will snap out. Are you sure it's a cedar? I can't really tell from the pics but it looks more like an alder or something.
  13. Had this rotten as hell birch to dismantle earlier riddled with ganoderma. Was dreading it was going to be to knackered to climb. Was a bit wobbly but all done, logged up and out by midday. Happy days. :-)
  14. I take my travel mug everywhere with me, so if this situation arises I get the lads to pop the coffee in there and send it up :-). Nice morning coffee with a view.
  15. Not sure what I actually walk but it feels like at least 100 miles today. Exhausted....
  16. Haha way to bring up an old great post
  17. Really sorry to hear the news. Seems to be all to often nowadays. Hope things turn around for you mate.
  18. You can use an anchor hitch hitch with a hitch climber. I do :-).
  19. The worrying thing is that these people genuinely believe that they are being generous. The even more worrying thing is that there may actually be some nutter out there to take then up on these ridiculous offers. Let's hope not ahy
  20. If it's the end of a long rope I'd cut the end off and burn the end with a lighter to seal it. If you wrap some electrical tape around it and cut in the middle of the tape then seal it it holds better IMO. If you want a spliced eye then you'll have to send it off unless you can splice it yourself and get it lowlered but that seams like more hassle than getting used to tying a termination knot. :-)
  21. Makes sense but do you not find that things can get a tad hectic. Say you have a load of work piling up. If it's booked in then you know that jobs there and coming up, if weather that day is too bad you can phone up and explain rebook, then fill the day with a few little (weather not a problem) jobs.
  22. I'm going to give it a go, unfortunately I fear most customers are going to want a specific date. But I definitely see the benefits of working this way without a doubt.
  23. I am going to give this a go. And try and work this way if possible. Seems like a lot more chilled out way of working.
