  1. Hi Tom, I wouldn't bother with theory stuff at your stage. A chainsaw ticket (30/31), as mentioned before makes you useful to an employer and is a skill you have the rest of your life. The theory you can do later on if you really commit to it. If you have 30/31 you should be able to get some trial days with someone in your area. All the best. Jan.
  2. As of next week the early starts are essential for me, it'll be getting dark by 5pm.
  3. I bought a bosch 40m laser measure (was about £70), it is OK up to 20m (if it's not too sunny), I wouldn't recommend it and will be looking for something better eventually.
  4. I got £80 a day climbing when I started out, about 4 yrs ago. After 4 months that went up to £100. Climbing every day with someone who knows more than you and can teach is worth a lot. If you can get in with a good team you will learn a lot that will see you right for years to come. Imo your first job is an investment in the rest of your career. Good luck with it. Jan.
  5. The arb association publish Fungi on Trees, an arborists field guide. Its about £15 quid and has great colour photos to help Id them.
  6. Mate at work, then reading up on it and doing it myself. No formal training.
  7. Cheers Gary, No Chris said it this year. I couldn't get a place last year, too many southerners attending! Thanks for the reply, I will look up David's post. All the best for next week, thanks for taking the time to reply. Jan.
  8. Eddie stobart buy chip for biomass. Had a chat with them last week about it.
  9. Hi Gary, Re mulching. Chris Simpson of ITS was quite anti mulch when I was at Hazard Tree Inspection, he basically said in Scotland you don't need to worry about water retention. I have been quite pro mulch. Can you recommend any good articles re benefits? Cheers Jan.
  10. Pruning seasonality is interesting what about adding nesting birds to spring/summer, as a neg?
  11. Yep I agree witches broom. I recently removed lots from some trees mainly cos they overhung a car park and the client was concerned they might snap off and land on a car. They weigh a hell of a lot for their size, and do sometimes break off due to this. They will no doubt re grow but client was aware of that.
  12. I'd say ganoderma too, either australe or applanatum. The redness on the trunk looks like spores.
  13. Your Id looks right to me. Sounds like the tree is gubbed. Is it your tree or a clients? If it is yours you can leave it and see how it does, if it is safe to do so. Jan.
  14. Where in Scotland Scott? The TOs on the east coast all seem very reasonable and would allow that to be dealt with if you email photos.
  15. My first saw was a second hand stihl that went bang after a month. I then bought a new husky 555, 60cc will run an 18" bar easily. It has been great, only thing it has needed is a new brake band, that's after 3yrs. My husky dealer is on 3 miles away so very handy.
  16. Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time. I was a psych nurse for a long time before I did tree work. My advice is that there is no magic solution that works for everyone, you will need to find what works for you. Anti depressants, counselling, CBT, etc or complimentary /alternative medicine all works for some people, don't write any of them off till you have properly tried them. You will find something that works for you. I also wouldn't recommend isolating yourself more by deleting loads of contacts, when you are feeling better you may see those friendships/acquaintances differently. Lastly you can have low mood/depression and still get out the house and function quite well, just inside you know you're not right. All the best. Jan.
  17. Re weight of fruiting bodies. They are full of water, up to about 90%, there is not much to them when dried. I recently tried eating some giant poly (they are edible) but were tough as old boots and not very tasty! My book did say they were worth eating.
  18. My local tip site ask for it a couple of times a year. Can't help the OP as I think the Scottish system is different. Was only carrier's or hauliers up here. I have carrier.
  19. Managed to stop and get some pics. I have driven past this a bit and noticed it failing. Giant polyphore on it at present, also found kretz previously.
  20. Mostly I find they talk about a "really big tree" to find it is a 10m tiddler. But if you have a rough idea of how long it'll take ie and the client says 1 man a day you know he is probably BSing!
  21. Guy that works with me bought one but not used it yet. He was looking to get a spare battery but found they are made in the US {not by einhell like most of their stuff) so not easy to get. He was talking of taking it back to lidl.
  22. I would guess at 3-4 man days. The pricing from 5 shires seems low for a weeks work for me but depends on your rates/overheads. Have you asked the client how long it usually takes to do? Jan.
  23. Rock climbing experience helps a bit with trusting the rope and not being scared of heights but that's about it. Completely different set of skills that take years to learn. Great if you enjoy a challenge and are happy to start at the bottom and pick it up on the job. As others have said buy some ppe get a basic chainsaw ticket and see if someone will take you on. Good luck. Jan.
