  1. That's a shocking attitude to take about 2 rope working. Sparks will fly if the hse know about this.[emoji6]
  2. Shush! don't tell him, he still doesn't know why that blade snapped.

  4. I'm sure this has come up before, but i use zubat 330 on my leg with a sawpod. I had a gomtaro but found the zubat heavier duty and harder to snap the blades. Which I've not done for a good while, although I've fed two to the chipper instead! (When feeding the chipper Connie branches catching the saw on my leg unnoticed). J.
  5. I understood winter was the best time to move trees, as they're dormant. I was pleased to see an 8ft acer we moved in Feb was leafed up and looking healthy when I drove past today. We severed a couple of roots as they went too deep to dig out, and it survived. Hope your trees cope OK. J.
  6. Oh, I thought it was spliced onto rope. So the pipe has the sling closed and rings in position. I don't think I would trust the pipe not to burst/split then all hell would break loose! I might just be a chicken s@#t though. I never like to have doubts about my gear when at a decent ht rigging hundreds of kg. Clearing up squished groundies adds hours on the job! J.
  7. Managed to get the 16 strand done, mainly due to@Tommy_B for the help he provided. Made a wire fid with 1.2mm piano wire.
  8. I have the makita 254z 18v, which is light but only good for light pruning. A guy that works with me has the t540i, it is very impressive compared to the makita, loads more power and battery life. It is a proper topper. The price is off-putting though. It also weighs about the same as a petrol one, and my elbows like a lighter saw.
  9. Bikes, it's so tempting to give it some with the right hand. I decided I had to stop riding them 20yrs ago. My luck was going to run out at some point. Hope you don't get hammered by the man! J.
  10. Hi Rich, Thanks, what diameter of wire? ebuy has 1 to 3mm available. jan.
  11. Hi Tommy, thanks for the help. TBH all of it!? I spliced my whoopies/loopies but this is first attempt with 16 strand. I bought Splicing Modern Ropes by Polman but it's not much help with Arb ropes, ie it doesn't cover 16 strand. I can't find a tutorial vid on doing it. There are a couple of vids of people doing it with a wand but not got one. I tried making a wire fid with bike brake cable (that's what I had around), but it is crap! Finding the right kind of wire is the issue (especially in lockdowned scotland). Think i might buy one (any recommendations). From your pics ,you have taken the cover back on itself to about 1 fid length down the cover (looks like you have tapered the end). I don't get why you daisy the core - or what you do with it next? I assume you taper it, and take it back up to overlap the tapered cover? Sorry if this is a bit of a newbie (splicing) post. Cheers, Jan.
  12. I have tried a couple of times to splice teufel hi vee, and failed. Tried using selma fids and a homemade wire fid. Any suggestions?
  13. Hi, I'll say my piece and David H or someone else better qualified will put me right! I think you can re plant with same species in the same space, without issue. There's a good talk by Lynne Boddy on the Arb Assoc website re trees and fungi, was on the virtual showground webpages, well worth a watch (less than 10mins long). From that I gathered a couple of things, one was that fungi are present in wood/trees already and become activated and pathogenic when the tree is stressed/over pruned etc. Well that's my understanding of it but I'm no expert! Jan.
  14. When did you last clean the air filter? My 560 was bogging down today, got it on the bench and the air fiter was choked.
  15. I'm a bit dyslexic and always found writing essays hard. I got taught to use mind maps which I found helped organise my thoughts on paper.
  16. Thanks mick, That was my gut feeling but I couldn't find anything to back it up. J.
  17. OK, I hadn't considered the fact people aren't buying at present, so it's value may be lower than previously. Dealer offered £4k part ex. I thought that was very low offer, but maybe not. I am in rush to sell. Still don't know what to ask for it. J.
  18. Hi Folks, I am thinking of selling my TW160 chipper and struggling to work out a re-sale value. I am thinking of buying a bigger chipper with bounce back loan. I can't find any for sale on the usual places ebuy, euctree or on any dealer websites. How do you come up with a sensible price for used equipment privately? I'd rather just sell at fixed price rather than auction site. Chipper is 3yrs old, dealer serviced and 450hrs. Paid £12.5K new. What do you do - take off 20-30% for first year then 10% thereafter? Looking forward to hearing your opinions! Cheers, Jan.
  19. We need to know what rope type and size you're using? Then I'm sure you'll get good advice.
  20. Done, hope you post the findings. J.
  21. Dan's post has got it right in my experience.
  22. Hi, I agree about not handing your address out to strangers on forums, however you can get parcels/post delivered to a post office of your choice for you to collect from there. It is called Post Restante (operates worldwide). I used it a lot when in Aussie/NZ. Might be worth looking into - to see if you'd be confortable doing that instead. All the best, Jan.
  23. Hebden must have one of the highest tin foil hat per capita ratios in the country!
  24. Agreed it looks like chicken of... but possibly unusually shaped phellinus pomaceus which is more common on plum.
  25. If you have 30/31, work hard and reliable £9-11 per hour is what I would pay you in Scotland. I try to train guys up, let them climb (using a silky saw)when possible, generally teach them stuff and make the job more interesting. This is self employed rate, you have to pay tax and ni from it, and no holiday pay. I have to say I wouldn't be looking to take more guys on a present, as demand for work is quite uncertain, in the medium term. J.
