  6. I guess it is Eggs, I wouldn’t go to someone’s house and expect them to stop swearing on my account. But I would ask them not to in mine.
  7. Interesting thread 5 Shires. I look after a house with up to 24 guys off the streets etc.. We have a zero tolerance policy on swearing. It’s surprising how the atmosphere and general environment of the house is improved by having this in place. It certainly helps guys stretch their vocabulary in order to express themselves without resorting to it. It definitely helps if you are trying to foster a culture of respect for one another.

  10. That doesn’t look like a very nice climb. If it was my choice, I would sever the ivy at the base and come back in the winter and do it. Either way I would cut all the foliage off and leave a couple of anchor points in case I had to re-do it in the future. Looks like the customer would be better off getting it removed completely.
  11. CNN have been trying on daily basis. [emoji51]
  12. There’s a colossal one near us in Solihull must be getting on for 10’ dbh
  13. Even better if it was Jamaican dollars.
  14. Those are the attachments for the leg loops and the sliding bridge. The ‘D,s’ at either end of the bridge and leg loops could potentially be used to clip into for work positioning (like the lower D’s on a treemotion) but it doesn’t look like they have been specifically designed for it. A phone call to the manufacturer may be worthwhile just to make sure.
  15. Very enjoyable thread to say the least. Interesting and inspiring life journey Erik, sounds like you have fought and won some very big battles. Love the work you do... a different world. It’s great how you incorporate the old school and the new in your tree work. Thanks for sharing.
  16. We’ve got a RC 3001. It’s a very simple, solid and effective unit. You can add the winch to it at a later date, so you can spread the cost a bit.
  17. Which Kolibri harness are you referring to? Pics would help...
  18. I have to tell the truth Mick, The job was at our own place as ‘we’ were the only firm that could get there in time to get the road cleared. The storm hit at about 4 in the morning I was awake and heard a mighty crash/crunch from outside. I looked outside and the biggest oak we had, had come down in the wind. The insurance company were happy with our quote and the neighbours in the Cul-de-sac behind us were able to use the road by 11 am. A mate brought his mill on a later day. I sold the rest of the timber to a firewood guy and we kept the the big lumps for ourselves to slab and plank . Bit of a unique opportunity although I was gutted to lose my favourite tree. (About 25t of timber) We tried milling on another customers job, similar size, and like you said, we would have been better off just ringing up and getting away to the next job.
  19. Insurance work on a v large 196 year old wind blown oak. 5 guys, 3 grab loaders, 1 avant, 1 busy day. (Plus one days milling and still got a few lumps left to mill.) £3800 + vat.
  20. If this is the benchmark......., Then everyone who held a position of authority, who either by commission or omission was complicit or had anything to do with these terrible cases where vulnerable kids were left to be victimised by predators, should be doing serious jail time far in excess of what TR was sentenced to. That would be justice, seen to be done.
  21. Worked in a factory making factories (in kit form) one week I sat at a machine pressing metal components, the technique was pic a component out of a box place in the machine, press two buttons, remove component and throw it into a box on the other side of the machine. 12 hour shifts to make the crap wages viable... That job really made rainy super wide conny hedge re-re-re-reductions look like exciting adventures. Even in the rain.
  22. Paphos, Cyprus. July 2019.
  23. Couple of years ago we landed a job doing a couple of large removals for a property developer. Big Victorian house, nice part of town, very big front garden, so the trees were coming down and a big drive, some hard landscaping and nice gates going in etc.. plus a big refurb on the house. This was to be the first of many (well paid) jobs with this developer, well respected and doing legit quality work. (No ringbarking) When I first saw the trees, a large mature beech and 2 large silver birch I was surprised that there were no TPO’s on them. The developer showed us the architects report and the planning permission and I also double checked with the council who were very evasive on the phone about whether there were TPO’s or not. We finally established there weren’t. We were just about to start work when a neighbour comes out and starts arguing with us about why we are about to remove the trees, then a guy from the planning dept comes up to us and tells us to stop work. He informs us that the council have just issued a blanket TPO for the area because the neighbour had objected. The developer was understandably furious having gone through the correct channels etc.. (We never got any more work off him) It turns out that the council had been neglecting their duty to provide proper tree surveys in order to be able to designate TPO’s in this area (which is why these trees end up nearly ‘slipping through the net’ ) It’s easy to have a go at the home owner, developer or contractor. If the council did their job properly, these situations wouldn’t arise so often. Important, mature trees with amenity value don’t just spring up overnight. It shouldn’t be beyond the council to provide decent surveys and make quality decisions on which trees should be protected. Surely the TPO should be issued purely by merit of the value of the tree rather than the perceived character of the homeowner! I’m not condoning it at all but you can see why people resort to ringbarking. (Sorry for the derailment, Steve)
  24. Great job Steve. Looked like a lot of picks even for a big tree. Bet you felt it the next day.
  25. Mate sent me this video recently..... crazy contraption but it certainly gets through some knotty lumps. I’d love to see the risk assessment for it......
