  1. The Dexter Elm on the Dexter estate in Malden. This photo was estimated to be taken between 1894 and 1895. These men are climbing the Dexter Elm to find and destroy gypsy moth egg masses. The Dexter Elm survived for about 250 years.
  2. Spraying doesn't seem a sensible longterm solution for maintaining a conservation habitat imo. What was keeping the birch in check in the past historically? (Probably was a combination or grazing burning and coppicing etc) Is the birch regen encrochment from adjacent land area that is now managed different? Local wildlife trust place does controlled burning and some strimming.

The little echos have good power to weight ratios or that rear handle version or the sthil topper CS-2511WES CS-350WES Stihl MS 201 C-M Sthil msa 220 battery saw is 3.6kg without, battery but a battery is 1.8kg so will overall weight i think nearly same as 550xp? I reckon 40cc and over overwise it will be slower though.

  7. Do you have massively long bean wig wam? I bought a load of 8ft tonkin 18-20mm a few yrs back and using re-useable cable ties for lashing teh bean sticks . (Was fed up of hazel having to crowbar bar the holes) Also bamboo last alot longer.

  9. Yeah see all the locals ones going out and in the mega shed everyday for milking they have even built miles of new tracks for the cows to walk along across the fields.

  18. The japs do a silky type blade for recip saws but doesn't look much less effort than a hand saw.
  19. I found thoose recip saws have terrible vibration and slow cutting but ie was a cheapo one. A cordless one is useful for roots in holes & trenches though etc
  20. I looked into this before think the largest one around is 2.2kw so about 40cc eqivalent.   21. North Wales Didn't think there had being much frost as so mild. Maybe it was frost followed by drought in summer that finished them off, but soil is heavy clay so fairly good at retaining moisture (maybe was too wet with all the rain in Feb?)
  22. Could double check it with another different moisture meter maybe?
  23. Used to use this as cover on veg garden plots to stop weeds the when plot wasn't in use/fallow but then the rats ate holes in it when it was in storage one summer. It lasted many years until the rats got at it. Still have few small sheets and no UV degradation... Meant a load less job weeding as killed area of grass/weeds ready for planting veg and it also warmed soil i reckon. Anying that would as be good as replacment? New bail wrap isn' the same type. Have had some woven weed membrane stuff since that wasn't as durable and is expensive.
