  1. Been thinking more recently that a decent gps would be a good thing to have. I guess my wishlist would be: Reasonably waterproof/shockproof Rechargeable rather than replaceable batteries Able to upload/download data easily Having some sort of OS map for terrain etc onboard Road details and directions although not primarily for road use. Nice statistics .. conversion between OS and GPS coordinates. Easy to draw simple maps (Not looking for complex surveying capability but just to mark boundaries of sites etc) Emergency functions? Decent screen day and night And most of all cheap! Any ideas?
  2. HS2 route Cubbington pear is 2015 'Tree of the Year' - BBC News is the correct link.
  3. Any other votes for the scudo/expert/dispatch vans? Just a bit bigger than a berlingo/kangoo/partner van so still fine on fuel (get about 40mpg) but you can actually lie down in the back and fit a full sheet of ply in over the seats, plus two sliding doors..
  4. tuffking/haix firefighter boots do me really well, full leather/goretex so nice and breathable, much better fit than any wellies, steel toe and midsole. Haix also do the 'fire hero' chainsaw boots if that's your thing too.
  5. I've seen several wood wasps around, they have a large ovipostor - spike for laying their eggs which looks like a massive sting..
  6. Might as well take the bait .. We truly do live in a mixed up world when people consider women's right of control over her own body more disgusting than the killing of a critically endangered species .. Thought this comment pretty accurate .. 'Considering the PP videos were disseminated by a known con artist using a fake company operating under guidelines completely incongruent with its mission statement (illegal); and considering that man's films have been debunked as selectively edited and intentionally misleading; and considering he does exactly that for a living -- con people; and considering the "sale" of body parts amounted to recompense for storage and shipping fees (no "profit"); and considering those tissue sample help develop vaccines and cures for diseases; and considering PP performed 500,000 breast exams, 400,000 pap smears, and 4.5 million STI tests including HIV in 2013, people need to STFU with their conspiracy theories and obsession with hurting women. PP stops more abortions through sex ed and contraception that it facilitates with safe, medically supervised procedures.'
  7. Inspect the flue liner with smoke test and visual inspection, if its fine ... Double wall stainless flue pipe, you get adapters for joining onto the end of a liner .. firestop plate, wall sleeve, support brackets, flashing and storm collar through the roof, cowl and depending on height guy wires .. Installed by hetas approved or signed off by building control .. google flue pipe for your favourite supplier.. Sounds about right?
  8. And beards don't help with dust masks!
  9. Examples .. postage included TREND AIRSHIELD PRO air fed battery powered respirator /mask. | eBay Pureflo PF33 ESM PAPR | Respirator Mask Hard Hat & Faceshield SCOTT TORNADO T POWER BATTERY POWERED AIR FED MASK RESPIRATOR | eBay The second one seems to be what I'm looking for, with ear defenders it looks to be what's needed, going to look for cost!
  10. So after a long day of chainsaw milling, with a full wallet but a lung full of dust, has anybody had any practical solution for breathing while chainsaw milling? Been using wee dust masks which work alright and don't really annoy me too much, but still feel like I'm inhaling the same cloud of dust and smoke. Has anybody tried the powered respirators, specifically the ones with an inbuilt battery in the helmet? They come with a full face shield and ear defenders and seem to be got cheap enough. Questions I'd have would be; Does the face shield steam up and heat up or does the fresh stream of air keep things good? On a more H&S topic, would the models without a hard hat be suitable for milling on a site where everything is on the ground and no overhead hazards? Is there any battery-in-helmet models available with hard hats? Seems like the face shield would be rated for a higher class of impact protection than a standard visor anyway.. Do they make a big difference in terms of quality of air?
  11. /me blushes .. Was just looking for your contacts too! Ended up being a good day and with any luck back to do some chainsaw milling
  12. For me: In pocket: Israeli field dressing and celox gauze. In first aid kit (kept with fuel cans): celox gauze, CAT tourniquet, a few eyewash pods, big bandages, assortment of plasters, steristrip, safety scissors, heat blanket. Alongside a 'big box' first aid kit kept in vehicle.
  13. To be clear If I try and start it up again after dieing; Pull over a few times more than usual on choke it'll sputter as usual. Take choke off and pull over and it will run for more or less 20 seconds then die again. So just to check that the symptoms wouldn't match up with crankcase compression e.g perished oil seals? Likely to be ignition or carb issues?
  14. It won't restart on choke but after it, sounds like a fuel issue. I thought it could be the tank breather but checked it and cleaned it and absolutely no different, even tried it without it and no difference. Checked it with a tach and until cutting out rpm is within spec.. Must say I've not pulled the carb apart yet, could this be an issue with heat? Probably worth a shot.. Pull out the plug and turn over, spark would look weak/inconsistent if any issues?
  15. I've got a husqy 435, got it used a few months ago and had very little use, barely anything on the sprocket etc. Worked fine for a few weeks and now it's not working. It'll start fine, sometimes with a bit of difficulty. It will run for up to 5 minutes and suddenly stop. Any attempt afterwards while it's hot it might run for 20 seconds after being on choke but no more. Seems to be a heat related issue. Everything looks fine, it's still got compression, piston and pot aren't scratched, ignition 'seems' ok.. Is there anything common to go wrong on these saws or where to look next? Don't really have loads of use for the saw but it'd be good to get it working! Might sell it and get a 550/261 instead
  16. Got about 50 myself waiting to see how they do
  17. I've been thinking of trying this out for rocket stoves with either vermiculite and cement or clay with fine sawdust, but with the inner metal lining 'sacrificial'; i.e it is a former for the outer insulation and burns away over time leaving the lining in place. Durability would be an issue but if you managed to fire it evenly and end up with a big ceramic kiln then it could work for non-movable applications? Any ideas on physically durable refractory cements? Breezeblock retort kiln?
  18. If you do a bit of cycling regularly I wouldn't worry too much about 60km a day, I'd say a reasonable pace for me is 50 miles/ 80km a day fully loaded with camping gear and food, having plenty of time to stop at nice views and set up camp. Up to 100 miles in a day really pushing it but that gets a bit silly. Any bike will do. Just check the obvious things, put a decent set of tires on. Loctite up pannier mounts etc. Have spares of anything you can think of, plus lots of nuts bolts and jubilee clips. Things will fall off. Prepare to eat like a machine, think at least 4-5000 calories a day. Handlebar bag with snacks in for while you're on the move. Lots of nuts and fruit and dense stuff, make sure you've got plenty of water with you.. if it's hot long sleeved loose fitting clothing, make sure it wicks the sweat away and lots of suncream. If it's wet get drenched as long as you have a dry set of clothes in a dry bag. In terms of fitness, never really prepared for long cycles as I do a fair bit already. First day will be hard, second day you'll be barely able to get out of bed, third you have to pump yourself out of bed with a bottle jack and then it only gets easier. Never really had saddle sore issues badly, just try and get clothes that wick sweat away and go for a well shaped hard saddle, soft saddles seem to be a lot worse for me ..
  19. Real lifelike figure there david! Any chance of an update from the OP?
  20. Is there a market for smoking? Probably not in such quantities but people pay silly prices for a little bag of oak chips for putting on the barbecue..
  21. Think it goes into the barrel at like 70% but this stuff didn't really taste any stronger than regular whisky
  22. The leftover whisky barrel bottoms!
  23. Best I ever tasted .. Friends of mine got a load of whisky barrels to scrap, while breaking them apart there's always a few litres in the bottom that's been sitting for a good few years... WOW.
  24. Had a few willows in the garden that I cut back every couple of years, makes good pea sticks and the next year good fuel for the rocket stove Anybody got any good biomass willow cuttings to swap for vegetable seeds or other suggestions?
