  1. Am I right in saying if it had only 1 stamen then it'd be a plum? Saw some today flowering too..
  2. I'm certainly liking the look of a berlingo m-space but the insurance would just be too much .. cheapest I can find is 1300 for it whereas I can find 6-700 for a van berlingo or a similar small van .. it would be good to carry more passengers sometimes though. hmm ..
  3. So just wanting any opinions on a good small van to get for a first time driver. Getting more work in arb and getting my license soon so think it'd be a good time. Budget is around £1000 .. Wishlist: Good amount of space for logs, kit etc Towbar for possibility of trailers Small-ish engine for insurance but powerful enough for reliable use A few ones I've been looking at: citroen berlingo , both the van and m-space models renault kangoo daihatsu hijet Don't really quite know if I'm barking down the wrong path though .. And as to insurance as a newly qualified 21 year old it's a bit ridiculous how much you can get charged! Most of the quotes I'm getting are from 700-1800 but did get one for 537 for a hijet which doesn't sound too unreasonable. What can I look for to get the premiums down? So far all I can really see is the number of seats and engine size but that doesn't seem to be all of it. Vans actually seem to be cheaper to insure than cars for me but maybe that's just down to the number of seats?
  4. Depends on the size of the engine really as far as I can understand it .. Gas offtake like with the domestic cylinders relies on the gas vaporising from the liquid surface in the tank at a fast enough rate which can be unreliable with high loads and low temperatures .. Whereas the liquid offtake regulators act more like a carburetor producing a mist. But I have a 9hp/5kva generator running a welder all day with absolutely no problems. Funny thing is though the guy that sold me it gave me two liquid offtake bottles but if I run liquid through the regulator it freezes it up in no time .. so I have to put them on their sides the wrong way up so the dipstick is pointing into the gas to use them! Depends on the regulator! The liquid offtake bottles are easy enough to get though but only at a major calor gas supplier, but I don't think in the larger 47kg variety? You will enjoy using it though, the engine oil will stay clear indefinitely, less exhaust fumes and also you have a much bigger tank of fuel before having to refill and without the mess of petrol. One random question: has anybody seen a 4-way changeover for propane tanks that outputs at full bottle pressure? Would be lovely to setup for a house backup generator style where you can change over the bottles without losing service.
  5. I did a tree removal for somebody a few weeks ago which was on private land next to his house, was all good apart from him standing there watching the whole time even trying to look right up close when we were felling it .. All said and done and then he goes on about these other trees next to it .. Did some enquiry about them and they turn out to be on council land .. no way.
  6. Just noticed them in my pond today too! Didn't catch them in the act of anything though..
  7. It's one of the ones that just has a rotating field with two coils with a diode and capacitor on each side, then a phase shifted winding the capacitor is attached to on the stator .. Tried replacing the start capacitor and flashing it but no luck at all .. I'll just have to get it all apart and have a good look at the windings but I've not got a workshop at the moment and tbh getting sick of ******* around with this old genny .. If anyone has a spare alternator let us know! Will see.
  8. I've always heard that about rhododendron, and I've always been of the opinion that it's perfectly fine when very well seasoned in a well-installed wood burner, but laurel can be that bit more acrid and sappy so take that with a pinch of salt.
  9. Go on .. I've heard the thing of setting your multimeter to resistance and it shows a low value for a short time and then goes to infinite and it does this but over a time of maybe 15 seconds. Flashing the capacitor probably isn't going to do anything since it died mid-use not after a long period of time?
  10. I had one of the cheap chinese saws and to be fair it did run, cut and do everything I needed it to for a year .. But the vibration mounts quickly turned to dust, the fuel caps broke, lots of little niggly wee problems .. The engine was perfectly fine though. But then one day I was using it and noticed that the chain brake handle had a nice crack right along it and it wouldn't engage
  11. Bit of a long shot but does anybody here have a spare 5kva tapered shaft alternator for a honda generator/ a 5kva generator for spares? Mine just died halfway through planing up a load of beams and can't for the life of me figure it out, I'll still have a good play with it but looking likely I need a new one. All the windings look ok, its brushless so can't be any issues with them, there could still be an unseen short or the diodes or capacitors have gone though, because the windings are such low resistance my multimeter just records them all as a short circuit .. In Edinburgh but can arrange a courier.
  12. Mate of mine lives in a Ural APC .. he reckons it does about 5mpg!
  13. Dried lemon peels on top of the stove .. A bucket full of kindling soaked in paraffin .. waste vegetable oil poured over everything .. birch bark ..

  18. Am I wierd in liking oysters when they're at that stage? Me loves it when you see the maggots popping out when you fry it
  19. Just thought I'd post this up on the offchance anybody nearby is up for giving a hand; Been helping out with the peace campers over at faslane recently and been getting the gardens sorted out for the spring. Is there anybody nearby who could sort out a load or two of woodchip for the camp? And although the council came along a while ago and chopped the more dangeroose trees back along the road a lot of the trees around are in a bit of dire shape, anyone who could come and have a quick look or if I get some photos anyone can give me a quick opinion on here? There's about 50 trees mostly up to 40 years old, approx 50% birch, 20% sycamore with a few elm, cherry, scots pine, ash and oak scattered about too. Would like some advice on fire damaged trees and overshading by sycamore and a few other problems. Although the camp doesn't have a lot of money I'm sure they'd be up for compensating you for your time to some degree /me hides and waits for political shitfest to boil over
  20. As long as you've been keeping an ok rotation up there's not much reason to leave it now considering the work that's been put into it, it's a pretty mild winter though so you could think of sowing some hardy green manures to take you over until the spring sowing season then dig them in. For any gardens I'm involved in I like to add 1 m3/10m2 of greenwaste compost to start it off and then just whenever I can get my hands on some poo and manure add it in. One cool one to do if you have any coffee shops near you is to get their used grounds as they're happy to give it away, I like to grow oyster mushrooms on them too though. Apart from that leaf mulch, comfrey/nettle mulches, straw, anything compostable all goes either straight into the garden or on the compost heap. Don't tend to worry about it too much everything seems to do fine. ^As long as it's not too ridiculous (I have seen somebody make a bed with about half of it being wood ash **** you not) clean wood ash from wood burned without any plastic or treated wood is a good source of potash and can be put on in pretty large quantities.
  21. At college atm, just browsing around stuff on the internet. We're doing a plant physiology experiment and have a 50 minute break while our maize leaves photosynthesize
  22. I don't know if theres any videos about of the sawmill at tinkers bubble but its an amazing thing .. only takes the same amount of wood as a stove wood too .. Can't find too much on it but.. http://www.reocities.com/CapitolHill/congress/7727/steam.gif http://www.sherborneprep.org/storage/2012/PrePrep_lessons/Tinkers_Bubble/Year_2_at_a_traditional_saw_mill.jpg [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPJE8xraUyE]Living in the Future (Ecovillages) 3 - Tinkers Bubble - YouTube[/ame] 1:27 pretty amazing seeing the thing running.
  23. Did a felling course in December and all of it was similar conditions .. don't think we were able to fell much more than a single tree without hanging up .. But then for the assessment we were on some nice widely spaced larches and they came down perfect!
  24. The funny thing is it didn't even engage!
