  1. Apparently it's where the term 'getting pissed' and 'taking the piss' came from too ..
  2. Just been looking about on the web for stainless sheet for a stove design I'm making and it really seems not as expensive as I'd thought to get sheet steel parts laser cut .. has anybody here used these online services and has it worked well? Did you get what you expected? Most of the stoves I've made before are slap it together gas bottle affairs which look amazing but it's got me thinking I could just spend a couple hundred quid on getting a load of plate steel cut to shape and all I have to do is bolt and weld it together.. :evil grin: Going to do up a proper cad design and see what they charge. Spent today cutting out al the bits of metal for this design: Institutional Stoves But been doing all sorts recently. Going to try making a bread oven next Shall get photos of my work if its interesting..
  3. A waterbutt full will kill a rhododendron bush nicely
  4. So is there nobody else who uses bowsaws for tree work then ? 's long as you still have the blade protector they work grand..
  5. Looks like 30ft and on top of his garage???
  6. Anyone going from gloucester/forest of dean to scotland any time next week?
  7. HAKKI PILKE 1X37 Firewood Processor Forestry | eBay Possible? Just in case..
  8. Aye, anybody have any idea if it actually has any chance of working covering the roots with soil?
  9. So who wants one of these? vintage chainsaw stationary engine | eBay
  10. To be fair though in the summer I'll travel 3-400 miles to festivals for work, but that's camping there.. For a full days work must take it out of you doing a lot more than an hour each way?
  11. Just interested in how far people here will travel to work, either on a commuting basis or whats the furthest you'll cover. Starting to get a few offers of jobs and as of yet not got my own transport so I'm finding it difficult to get to any outwith the local area, so my furthest is about 10 miles (hours cycle) unless somebody can pick me up or I can get somewhere by train.. With a vehicle I can see it being better but can't really see myself travelling more than an hour each morning.. What about y'all?
  12. See I just want to know if anybody's ever found any up a tree? Would just look like regrowth from a recently topped tree
  13. What's peoples opinion of celox and the like?
  14. What size bars are you running? I always use veg oil and never had any problems but have the feeling it might be different if you're running a big 30" bar on a mill etc and the oil wouldn't stay on the bar long enough?
  15. So my friend has just got a used ms362 and he's wanting to set it up as a chainsaw mill if possible, seems like it would have plenty of power but just wondering about what size bar it could be stretched to? Since with the mill they're looking at it will only give them about 12" of cutting surface, would it be fine to put on say a 28" bar which would give 20" of cutting surface? Stihl recommend to put a max 20" bar on it but don't know how that translates to an alaskan mill? And can you even buy bigger bars that will fit on this saw?
  16. Seems in my situation not - cheapest I could find insurance wise for a people carrier was £1700, cheapest for a van style was £700 - probably makes a big difference being a newly qualified driver..
  17. Aye and I've still got the pin-up with the gigantic picture of 20 climbers on the tree somewhere too
  18. It's really funny the looks you get when you're sharpening a spade
  19. I do have the option to do both at the same time but it might just be a matter of time and money lacking, it's certainly worth considering. Thought it might be better anyway to have some more time in between when I can do some climbing for experience even if it is just recreational climbing, and even if I only have the 38 it shows I'm working towards my full certs and still covers peoples legal requirements. On the other hand I can get both out the way and concentrate on getting some work and being able to practice the whole range of skills in a work situation.
  20. Anybody have any idea on LOLER for new equipment?
  21. Once he's at the top .. into the chimney .. or just a sly one while tying the ropes .. can't be raining that much when it hits the ground from 150ft
  22. My engine has a vapor 'beam' regulator that works on the suction from the carb directly without an external sensor, very easy to install. On the engine I got it with it had a modified jet that had a hose barb on the end, and with this engine I took the float valve and bowl out, took out the jets and clamped the hose around the outside of the tube that holds the jets. Has a little primer button to put in a couple seconds of gas and always starts on 3rd pull.
  23. Might see if I can get some after the fact pictures but it won't be nearly as exciting. Was a big conifer over a track at my friends place about 80cm dia where we cut it with a crosscut saw -- the thing had at least a 15ft rootball with a LOT of dirt on it and several small birch trees growing on it. Was a hell of a bang when it shot back up again.
  24. Just set me back £450 .. ouch, but a good investment. I'm hoping to do an aerial climbing and rescue course at the beginning of april, so until then what would you say would be good to practice and do to get the most experience? I'm a reasonably experienced tree climber already with drt and srt but mostly using odd bits of kit I've put together, so I reckon just getting a good bit of recreational climbing in on different types of trees and getting properly to grips with throwlines etc should get me bang on the spot. Never really had to do aerial rescues before but that's what the course is for I guess, and the weekend betweeen the course and assessment I can practice with some friends and teach them something too Is it worth getting a wire core flipline and spikes for a new climber or is it only really worth it when I'm qualified with a chainsaw up a tree / when I find a need for it? If I understand rightly then I'll be perfectly qualified to cut as much as I physically can with handtools on a rope and harness and install equipment in trees? Do I need LOLER checks on new equipment or just a good check over all of the equipment and then loler at every 6 months after?
