  1. Guy at garage didn't have enough money to get petrol to get him home Paid for some petrol Then he asked for a sandwich ..... A thank you would have been nice ....... There's a saying in my family " your worth your keep for your cheek "
  2. I'm not a birder but my desert island discs would include three sounds Skylarks - don't get them here, and the pure sound of my youth, English partridge going to bed at nght, not heard them for years Lapwings
  3. Guess it's what you like My idea of hell would be one of those giant cruise ships... But every day when I walk through my little bit of woods I am overwhelmed by just how beautiful it is.... I spent a whole year of my education standing in a cold wet field 'doing sports' Shame is the field was very dull, as was sports in which I have no interest But a year spent standing in a bit of nice woodland would have been terrific Different people different strokes I guess....
  4. Just heard cuckoo Seems very late in season Anyone else still hearing them?
  5. When I was assessing had guy whose car was stolen He saw them drive off and ran into police station He could see his car from station and ran to the desk, shouting and pointing at his car Policeman on counter made him go to the back of the queue ! After waiting for all people in front of him to be served he'd lost his faith in police.....
  6. Talked to guy who bought chinese tractor at half price of massey Said dealer in essex was total wa***r Contacted chinese manufacturer, spares in his hand in three days He had nothing but praise for them One of problems is importers buy on price Then provide no back up Used to be inundated with guys bringing in chinese motorbikes, they hadn't got a clue what they were doing ......when they had container of bikes they couldn't shift, support was first thing out of the window.....
  7. Put your site on woorank It will tell you pretty much everything you need to do to get top ranking SEO. Guys are very much rip-off merchants -- their game is to get you on the drip at say £500 per month, then they'll tell you it'll take 12 months, so you pay £6k when they could have done it in a couple of months ..... And you've lost 8 months sales too Also advertise on google BUT LIMIT YOUR ADVERTS. To a very tight geographical area to keep costs down .....no pointadvertising in plymouth if your in skipton .....
  8. Hope you've told your insurers the Land Rover has been modified "a bit"!
  9. Try contacting manufacturer....( not supplier , although they may help) They won't want failures like this .... And failure feedback helps them ... You might find them more helpful than you expect .....
  10. Bows ( as in bows n arrows) Blanks quite expensive
  11. I just add up the analysis columns in analysis book Yes slower than excel..... But easy..... And I use pencil/fountain pen Much pleasanter to do than a spread sheet too.....
  12. You might be right But then think about the lazy inspector .... I don't do anything wrong if I can help it But I am fed up with smart arses trying to bully me Currently closing three bank accounts Smart alec last week accused me of incompetance because I don't know closing balances to the penny How can I when they will calculate interest on day they are closed And they have fannied about for two months .... He of course won't do the work just wants to act the pr**k Maybe I'm just sour
  13. I chucked in computerised accounts A client with garden centre had visit from vat man He said " how much so and so did you sell" Three clicks on pc and he told him Vat man said " thanks that'll be £3500 thanks" should be 15.5% We agreed he couldn't have done that with handwritten books + my bookeepers were crap So aquired large analysis book Piece of cake to write it up Invoices filed in envelopes - but not in any order All there but not easy for prat to cause trouble As I put them in analyse into expense columns ( fuel, repairs, stationary etc) Faster than messing about with bookeeper
  14. Sounds like me The bloody mortgage was a long uphill battle through mud Finished now..... Next problem is to keep it safe through future generations .....
  15. Not looking for numptie hurling ££££ at it Just experienced guy or girl who wants to build agri business There is clown in N Wales who is " pond consultant !" Fresh out of college, gov't grant, brand new landrover ..... I'd back Arwel the fencer anyday against him But what about girl from farming family... Knows the grants and contractors Goes to incoming londoner who has bought a few acres and says "I'll get you organised" Charges £300 for report that says Year 1:- repair/ renew following fences, top these fields, cut back these trees etc Year 2:- reseed these pastures , new gates here, hardstanding there Year 3:- etc etc Then takes over basic management ( for a fee) This is not rocket science or inventing the wheel but it gets incomers up n running Makes sense for everyone ....... There is well talked about case in N Wales Incomer ( production manager at ICI) Did his spreadsheets and cost flow and worked out xmas lambs bring best prices at easter Got his shepherd to Put ram in for xmas lambs At xmas foul weather, lambs dying everywhere Made his reputation by ringing shepherd and said "STOP LAMBING" Famous across N Wales .........
  16. I keep thinking there is a big opportunity in agriculture Lots of amateurs who own a good few acres ... And don't really know what they are doing.... Why not 1) set up management company 2) approach amateurs and say you'll write business plan for them listing what they need to do over next say ten years ( you charge sensible cost for this) and grants available 3) offer them honest management service at so much per year + profit share 4) you source subcontractors at reasonable cost, and generally make owningthe land fun and profitable Do the job properly and you'll be running decent size agricultural business within a few years And making decent money WITHOUT HAVING TO FIND CAPITAL TO BUY THE LAND Now trick is when your clients want to downsize/retire ....who is obvious person to sell to .? This lets you start with nothing and end up with agricultural business ......
  17. I wasstupid enough to do degree in early 80's Top of my course every year Came out with good degree when thatcher government oxford graduate ***** were having fun smashing up the UK engineering industries -- 500 engineering redundancies every night on news, so had to jump sideways into insurance assessing Been hard graft ....... Made jump to self employed, would have preferred engineering job but that was no-go I'd say look for profit ....and cash Avoid down time, if no body will pay you to climb, spend your time cutting firewood for winter sales ...... Keswick nice posh area, with holiday homes....they all need keeping tidy ..... Nice to turn up on holiday and find a shed full of dry logs and kindling .... Once they trust you with firewood look for something else to expand into ..... Make sure you have web presence .....
  18. Lion tamers always say the hitting them is a bad idea Obviously holds true for horses too!.....
  19. Road and track ( american car magazine ) reviewed budweiser horse team in april few years ago Reckoned they had two speeds Clip clop and clipity clop
  20. Not recommending it but:- In the war when they struggled to start Merlin engines (spitfires) in winter because the oil was too thick ( viscous) they added petol to the oil to thin it..... They reckoned petrol evaporated as oil warmed up Mind you the spitfires weren't designed to last that long either!
  21. There was problem in newcastle ( i believe) Jumping from balcony to balcony then burgling flats Stopped when somebody greased balcony handrails And scally fell By time police arrived handrails all cleaned
  22. Wet Every time its dry I have to do something away from here Fed up
