1. Steer clear of the dumper ,you only have to look at a constuction site to see the compaction and damage!! We've got a Honda 350 4wd very reliable small and nimble and very little ground impact . I agree about farm machines generally thrashed so bought a new one 6 years ago no problems.Try and avoid gimmicks like electric shift etc as expensive when they go wrong.
2. I agree how would you expect anything to chip conifer with blades like that ,as for flying chips you need to enclose the truck either a roof or tilt ,bandits have great chip throwing power and chip conifer well when sharp.
3. Keep going you're on a roll!!
4. I agree.
5. I've got one a fiesta van 2 years old when I bought it cat d came up on hpi check vehicle had been repaired after minor rear end damage no loading on insurance with nfu I lowered offer after hpi check will maybe have to accept less when and if I sell . Super vehicle local ford dealer gave once over and service no structural or mechanical faults.
6. I am an arb contractor producing around 250-300m3 per year, some for personal and family use and some for retail sales, firewood only makes up 2% of my annual turnover and is all 'salvage' from arb contracting jobs and not bought in to resale. The building is a slatted timber sided pole barn and no services are on site so it's only used for splitting ,drying and storage.
7. The meeting went well its a mixed use site / shed, some firewood production for personal use some for commercial all coming from Arb operations they decided that no rates were payable rightly or wrongly but I'm not going to argue!!
8. I agree with you they were on inters on most circuits they would have used a crane in that position it looks like he hit the solid weight on the back of the loader I hope he pulls through .
9. We've had a ts260 for 6 years ,and had a problem with the joystick I sent it away and got it refurbished on an exchange basis from a chap who advertised in the farmers weekly no problems since I will try and find contact details . Good strong machines good attachment system .
10. I agree, having been through 3 recessions,it depends on your business model there are plenty of advantages to new machinery productivity reliability etc and as you say put down a decent deposit 25%+ if things go wrong you can sell off the asset !on the plus side this asset can earn you money !open new doors or in the threads originators case get you tipping a load off instead of hand unloading which is progress. I have hire purchased over the past 28 years with no problems spread the cost good kit good image and charge the rates to cover it!! I must say if I had £100k sitting around in an ISA I'd use it or maybe buy to let at today's interest rates.
11.
Hi Tim I agree totally as I have many family members who are absolutely horrified by the rubbish that is being spouted in their name supposedly . I was just voicing what I feel many English people living around me feel many of whom are Scots living in and working in England,I also have family in Edinburgh and Sterling who feel the same.

12. If it's green waste TMA bark at hockering near norwich, greencomp near wymondham I think most will charge for a trailer as do all council sites including mile cross in norwich if it's chip or shredded you may get a free tip .
13. Thanks for the info I've got a meeting with valuations office on Monday your figures are right,it just depends on what value they put on it and what I can get it down to !!
14. Unfortunately it's more arb contracting than forestry a bit of woodland management but that's it ,the site itself is a 2.5 acre mixed woodland so some scope for part of the building to be used for management of that.
15. Thanks ,too late unfortunately voa wise,it is a site yard that we have owned for 18 years and have just won an enforcement appeal on changing it from woodland to woodland for importation of timber for commercial use.the storage shed area is 120 square metres a slatted sided drying shed/ pole barn. I expecting to pay rates but wondered what they were per square metre for this type of building.
16. Can anybody tell me what rates per square metre and what classification a firewood storage and splitting shed comes under thanks for any info.
17. I've got a 7.5 tonner +2.9 ton bandit 150 trucks done 200k original clutch driving with your foot resting on the clutch does more damage than reversing but depends how you reversei I suppose. We have 2 chippers 6 inch bandit + 12 inch bandit neither are sub 750kg I want things built to last and they do built like battleships (American ) and nearly weigh as much! Small one will tow with a quad or our toyota dyna good match .
18. This case just shows the inconsistency of LPAs, we have just moved from our base which was my fathers house for 20 years and had an area TPO on it on a group of mature trees including a copper beech ,acacia ,lime and sycamore now all that is left is the copper beech and 1 acacia consent was given to fell 6 TPO trees with no faults or defects,it's a joke over protection and under protection, new owners do funny things this lot within 2 months so I can understand where this council maybe coming from in your case.
19. I agree with all above including the north london bit.
20. I can only reply with praise for Askham Bryan, the course tutor Matt Metcalfe was first class ,chipper certificate in first block week ,basic chainsaw next block week, and so on,we even had a site visit to us in Norfolk to check us out and see my son on a work site not bad for a college in Yorkshire ,we got regular updates and feed back . There was no compulsory kit to purchase from them ,I personally think that block release apprenticeships are far better than day release as it gives the colleges more time to prepare the apprentice for nptc tests . All my sons course was fully funded including test fees training accomodation and travel expenses to Yorkshire and we as his employer received £1500 as well .there are some good ones out there!
21. I think he did 10 block weeks each 5 days including training and tests for which we did not have to pay ,accommodation and travel expenses were included as he is under 18. Most of the course was practical with tree ID and science included so 4-5 weeks climbing plus more practice in the work place.
22. My son has just completed the level 2 trees and timber apprentiship at Askham Bryan, very good communication from course tutor and chainsaw ,aerial rescue first aid ,chipper, climbing and chainsaw from tree certs gained in 10 months. As his employer this has saved me a lot of money and because the course is run in block weeks it's quite intensive BUT you have to input time and the candidate has to keep up with work both practical and written.
23. Agreed but very difficult to achieve in that position with light and root competition .
24. Of course it can be replaced , after all it was planted by somebody 150 + years ago maybe to replace something else that was there before!that's succession . It proberably doesn't need to be yet but don't exclude fell and replant as an option.
25. Just carry a fork and a rake and silky saw that's us equipped ! Seriously I agree with you it's applicable to HGV s also I see from early 2015 the speed limits to rise to 50mph on single carriageways for HGVs about time!
