  2. I think it depends what's on the vehicle reg document as mobile plant or special types are mot exempt and can run on red diesel ,this classification changed a few years ago to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes ,mewps are also o license exempt I think.
  3. We run a Man 8.180 with alloy chip body ,we've had this truck from new in 2007 before that we had an iveco 7.e 15 again from new ,the Man is much better truck the iveco which used to go trough bushes etc like they we out of fashion. The MAN mechanically is very well built and we tow a bandit 150 Xp constantly behind it which at 2.8 tonnes tests it well .the cab is great and spacious which is important as I'm an owner driver. I hope to get another 5 years out of it!! Hope this is helpful try them all out.
  4. We used to have one which was over 3.5 tonnes it was registered as special types or mobile plant so no mot, this is not always a good thing as problems tend to build up mechanically rather than be dealt with. Your 6 monthly loller inspection will look at the chassis subframe and superstructure and safety of boom etc but not general carrier vehicle condition in my experience. We now operate a 27 m truck mount on a 3.5 ton nissan chassis cab, were insured with the NFU ,it's a special so your broker would have to speak to the underwriters ,were paying around £900 a year but the machine is 2 years old and cost around £100k new.
  5. No ,but I think he supplies other tips or other suppliers do. I was explaining how it can work out cheaper if you buy in quantity, the sandvik teeth are expensive I don't know how much the multitip ones are as I've never used them, always been more than happy with the speed that a sandvik wheel demolishes a stump!!
  6. This depends on the lads idea of what a viable business is,and what he needs to earn to survive, markets do have a saturation point ,the grass is not always greener.
  7. Are you sure it was just your mate asking?
  8. Ps the German included the flux .
  9. I've imported carbide tips from Germany and got a local engineers workshop to braze them on ,they were for a sandvik durodisk ,the teeth cost around £14 here the inserts and brazing came to around £7 total so worth doing ,I do 50 at a time which makes sense carriage wise from Germany.
  10. Not far wrong most transit tippers are towing a timberwolf !!
  11. Quite right! We took down a very large cedar in a church yard adjacent to a big country house ,we arrived in the morning to find the big house owners merrily barrowing away all the wood they could lift, when explained to them that this was ours and part of our contract they were both aggressive but eventually returned it .the house owner was a newly retired regional director of the National Trust! As if he couldn't afford to buy wood ,if he asked nicely we might have sold him some ,contrary to some peoples belief wood does have a value.
  12. Hi I 'm looking for an idea on cost to carry out around 20 tests in one geographical location ,how many can be done in a day roughly and who's my best bet in this area. I have not specified the tests personally but a consultant has almost to excess! Thanks for your help.
  13. Thats a similar price to what our truck mount cost £95-£100k,ours thinks its a tracked machine sometimes with the aid of portable roadway and will get in some tight spots without the weight of a telehandler. 3.5 ton 27m work height 230 kg cage limit and 15 m outreach plus its our tool carrier. as everybody says it depends on what your work is made up of as to what type of machine you need if you need one at all,our machine is used on 80% of our jobs and needs to be to justify the cost, you also have an asset that can be hired out for other uses. The 22m on the sprinter was sold for around £20k
  14. There are some advantages to vehicle mounts over tracked and trailer ,quick set up,increased outreach depending on machine,it really depends on the type of work you do and whilst I agree with some of the comments that you need a different machine for different jobs in practice if you own a machine of any type you tend to scheme and use it where ever possible and as I was told over 15 years ago outreach is king!
  15. Hi Kevin ,we have owned our own MEWP for 16 years now ,before that we hired machines our current machine is a Ruthmann TB270 ,27 m on a 3.5 ton chassis and is used on 70% of our jobs and as a tool carrier.
  16. Another tight spot!!
  17. I agree but they get away with it because they are a minority group and have special rights ,at least they do with our local authority!
  18. I feel for you were going through something similar at the moment,an enforcement appeal ,it's all loaded against you I'm afraid as they class it as commercial use of a woodland,it's the commercial element that they don't like ,which is daft in these so called "green renewable times".we explored getting a consultant in but at 5-7k in fees it was just not wort h it. We've been using our woodland which is 3 acres for splitting firewood for our own domestic use and selling any surplus from our own arb business for 17 years but it only takes one complaint or git of a neighbour .i suspect many arb firms are using yards farms etc without any consent.good luck did you get consent for your shed under permitted development?
  19. We've got a Carleton 2010 with sandvik wheel and teeth which is brutal,hp wise you need at least 27 and this size machine will load easily up a set of lightweight ramps on to your truck, the larger wheels help with traction and stability when grinding.
  20. I'd agree with that maybe 55 feet.
  21. I would say aspen by the colour and markings of the bark, but 30m? What diameter is the stem?
  22. Quite often it's the crane company and their policy and ultimate yes or no some companies we have used do not allow it ,but allow a cage on the hook others do ,at the end of the day it's down to the operator not the arborist.
  23. I'd agree I just did c1e because that's all I needed and could do it in my own 7.5 tonner with a hired trailer and a couple of days tuition which worked out much cheaper than a full blown c and e course.
