  1. So you hate them and never use them but you picture them on your website?. A good mewp will give you plenty of outreach / drop zone and reliability and can save you time and money. Mewps are like religion you've either used a good one and been converted or have had a bad experience and are a non believer . I agree that a hired in mewp with an operator who is not experienced in tree work can be a recipe for trouble.
  2. So what's your point? To correct you we had chippers 25 years ago and hired mewps we've owned our own for 20 years and updated ,with regards to the speed issue you cannot judge as you say you never use them! also with regards to time saving and the financial justification and payback of a mewp this depends entirely on your individual business model a mewp can work out cheaper than a freelance climber And extend your working life,it all depends on the type of work you do ,the quality of the machine and opperator just like the quality of a climber which in you case is perfect of course.
  3. You haven't seen a good one!! Obviously.
  4. A bit like us ts260 matbro with auxiliary feed for log splitter ,comes out of the yard occasionally for big lifts on site jobs, suits us well.
  5. Good post.
  6. Really !! I'll give you a race any day. Seriously what's your experience of mewps ,you have have to use them day in day out ,and a good mewp opperator is just as valuable as a good climber ,just less fatigued. Your comment about mewp failure is not backed up by the statistics as there are many anchour point / kit failures in the arb industry where as mewp failures are recorded as industry wide including construction and farming.
  7. Not really necessary Bandit supply a plastic pusher/ paddle used to be wooden both ours look brand new after 10 and 8 years, we just chuck the chogs on top of the brash and the machine does the rest .
  8. Can't help too much with canter or izuzu but we have a Man TGL 8.180 bought new 7 years ago and it's been a fantastic truck and still is ,before that we had an iveco 75.e 15 not so good .Our local dealer imperial commercials are Man and Izuzu dealers our 8 weekly inspections cost £110 +vat and you've got an annual mot. We had an izuzu 3.5 tonner and it bounced about like mad in the cab . You'll get less mpg but this will be offset by less trips and canters if like our sprinter will be expensive to service if done through merc dealer. Hope this helps.
  9. I agree cedar burns really well and customers love it but I keep it for myself:thumbup1:
  10. No they crossed the line between being the regulatory authority and council direct works team ,they had no right to take their contractor to the site visit unless your client asked them to .proving it and getting something done about it will be difficult MP good bet or local authority regulator. It's a cheap desperate thing to do on their part.
  11. I do know him and am not at all bitter and don't begrudge him any success ,but it kind of knocks your starvation theory when we alter markets with subsidies when we no longer grow food to eat. I have seen farmers / landowners / businessmen be paid to remove trees / hedgerows be paid to put them back and around me fence fields with not a hint of livestock and this is why the subsidy system needs reformed so that those small farms that need it get help but the huge landowner businesses can survive on their own just like we have to.
  12. THE man as you put it does farm land and describes himself as a farmer and a business man I think many businessmen will still call themselves farmers it's quite a loose term and they don't employ as many as they used to.
  13. The farmers down my way who are feeding digesters are making big cash ,well enough for a local one of ours to buy a crane hire business . Subsidies in anything be it agriculture ,power ,forestry distort markets not always for the good. The price of milk is not driven by the end consumer joe public who probably pays his taxes some of which goes to europe who then pay subsidies but by the supermarkets who up until now have dictated a loss leading price which started from the loss of the milk marketing board and transfer to large processors .
  14. How's it borderline? If they have validated the application then they must have been satisfied that they could identify the trees ,and if they did not come back for further info within the statutory 8 weeks and it's now 19 weeks past that to me is sloppy ,too many councils do this to avoid decision making or as a stalling tactic in both tree and planning related matters. I agree on submitting the 5 day notice but as said make sure they are as you say dead or dangerous and photograph to prove it. I have emailed these notifications in the past.
  15. We've got 2 as well as 211 's and husqy 540 the 150 is excellent for pruning and very light gives a very fine cut .for dismantles etc we use the husqvarna bags of power and very fast cut.
  16. Douglas burns really well as does cedar and scots pine ,it dries quickly and we mix it in with hardwood so sell mixed load ,people like it and are not that bothered about burn rate just as long as it does burn. Stove suppliers in my opinion are the ones who need educated as they are constantly telling customers to use only hardwood which is fine if you've got it .
  17. The devil is in the detail, the legally bit at harvest time in our area anything goes legal width might be 2.55 m but + 0.5 m of big bale either side. Most of the size of tractors and speed and age thing are regularly flouted and on farm 13 year olds and younger drving forklifts and tractors would we have13 year olds using chippers chainsaws etc? I know this from experience my inlaws farm 2000 acre of mixed arable was dairy as well but not anymore they work very hard as do most farmers and I fully understand the issues with stock farmers but not grain barons any subsides should be better directed .the rules on inspections for hgv should apply to large ag machinery used on the roads as it has the same capability to kill and injure on the roads
  18. Price of land would stop most of us at the moment Dan.£11 k an acre I agree that there are bad in all trades vehicle wise, but agree with some of these posts when you see a 17 year old flying towards you in a huge tractor and trailer with no slowing especially at harvest time when all road etiquette goes out of the window people not just Tree Surgeons get the wrong impression especially in our county norfolk where some large estates and farms receive £1 million + in subsides yet there no vehicle tax or fuel tax but more importantly regularised inspections as HGVs.
  19. It was part of a spec on 15 trees so to cover ourselves really, including taking out 2 dead trees and 1 removal to allow a neighbouring tree to develop ,you've guess it he wanted replacements for them all ,you can ask but it doesn't mean he'll get. With regards to Tree Officers I agree most are fine but some build empires and one was even referred to as a 'Tree God' by a tree wardens group locally I am now kneeling and bowing!!
  20. Yes I suppose so ,this tree officer had an agenda anti contractor, interestingly enough on a conservation area consent just given he asks for a replacement tree on a tree were only deadwooding no chance . The caution is only on their file not police ,I accepted cation because I didn't want to drag my wife through interview etc he knew that as others have said the standard of tree officers varies greatly from area to area.
  21. Try Rola trac there in gt Yarmouth
  22. No it is a caution probably worse than a police one because there is no time limit on it,my main point was that this councils policy was always to caution contractors but not householders which is against what the legislation states with regards to joint responsibility. This tree officer stated that he has given out many cautions to contractors but few to householders. We have a local council where you can go online put in the post code house number and it tells you where the nearest TPO or Conservation area is in metres, fantastic this should be the 'British Standard' for all local authorities .
  23. Not true ,it depends on the council we had a similar scenario when we took down 3 dead ash trees 30foot tall ,my wife asked the client if any TPO or conservation area reply was no turns out it was a conservation area again no photographic proof but major decay in all three coppice stools .i wrote explained and admitted we should have given 5 days notice. The Tree officer sent out a caution I asked if the owner and her agent would receive the same he said no as it was there policy to Always caution the contractor and not the homeowner,at the time of felling we replanted 3 trees as part of the job Limes but we were told to remove these by the owner on advice from the tree officer as Limes should not be planted near pond or water total rubbish. I know I was in the wrong and admitted it and this was a first in 28 years of trading ,I'm old school and trust clients to be straight but not any more!!
  24. I agree were on a restricted o licence for a 7.5 tonner and don't have any problems with inspection regime etc ,it's there for yours and other peoples safety. The 100k distance from base will be of great benefit to us but we will have to keep driving hours log to comply with GB regs we have digi tachometer in vehicle . The hire or reward / cpc issue is open to interpretation and vague if you carry tools for your job and driving is not your main occupation then you are exempt from cpc in my opinion. You'll only really know when you get a tug by VOSA but then it's too late!
  25. I bet he knows he's got that on the back of that 7.5 tonner what weight is that chipper Dean?
