  1. Yes I've got c1e which takes me up to 11,000 kg gross train weight,so if you've got a pre 97 license you only need to do a heavy trailer test ,but that still costs money ,without c1e you can go up to 8250kg.
  2. Tachograph digi card etc Operators licence- renewable every 5 years Inspection/ pmi every eight weeks We run a 7.5 tonne Man tgl8180 excellent truck 7 years old now we tow a bandit 150xp ,for us this gives us good capacity whilst being able to get in places, plus the bigger trucks do last better if looked after, they are stronger.7.5 tonner is not too bad on fuel ,18-22 mpg dependant on use.
  3. Don't you believe it ,there was a time not so long ago that there was only 1 insurer present in the arboricultural sector and they on equipment all risks insurance were paying out £150 for every £100 taken in premiums ,the cost rose at that point astronomically if you were able to get it. I think you're paying the same now as 5 years ago mainly due to the increase of insurers in the market, but this could change as it did then, think how low your premium could be if you had not had a claim ,the saving could have been used elsewhere in your business or more profit.
  4. We've got one ,it's a 300 single wheel very tight turning circle tows well we put m+S tyres on ours for better traction ,ours is a second vehicle we use it for small jobs firewood deliveries as our main chip truck is a MAN 7.5 tonner. We're very pleased with it after nearly 5 years.
  5. The video is as clear as day mate just like one of yours regularly posted on here ,this is a forum so people are allowed their views ,you seem the angry one relax.
  6. It's only a few numbers,no big deal! It comes printed on the letterheads:thumbup1:
  7. Not sure really I suppose its so they can clarify if you are actually registered or not ,it something that came up at an AA approved contractor inspection years ago because we did not have our vat number on our quotations , we have done for the past 12 years or so.
  8. Technically they are not paying vat to the tradesman but to HMRC ,we just collect it and pass it on!! We always state the price +vat that way business who are vat registered know the cost to them and our domestic customers are able to work out the addition of 20%,on you quotation you should have your vat number as well. At the invoice stage we have a vat breakdown ,being vat registered should not be feared ,with the threshold at 79k most 2 men teams should be aiming at at least that turnover.
  9. There's nothing wrong with straight felling a tree ,but this lot were not in control of the situation hence all the shouting yelling and near panic as the tree came over and the bloke who just moved the lorry walked straight towards the tree ,this broke all rules and was crazy.
  10. Again totally agree
  11. I don't think that's a good enough excuse,we all want to do things as quick as possible but these lot were just idiots! The guy filming it was he supposed to be stopping the traffic behind him?? It's a good job they moved the truck and chipper at the last moment and what the hell was the fool doing walking towards the tree as it came over,it would have been far more professional if they had coned off the road at both ends if that's legal after all they blocked it anyway with the tree. If they are AA approved I'm sure Paul Smith would find the vid interesting.
  12. Where does the extra weight come on the new 150xp Dean is it on a twin axle? And has the value of ours gone up yet???
  13. I think it's more like 2.8 and slightly heavier with the winch ,built like battleships!!
  14. Mainly engine size, and weight,we have a 150xp with a 140bhp Perkins ,the 150 ld has around 85 hp and no engine cover and a few other extras to reduce weight for towing ,but you don't have the same grunt for chipping big stuff.
  15. Apparently not if a enforcement notice has been served you can appeal and if you win the appeal you don't need a cert of lawfulness it's the proof criteria that difficult to achieve .
  16. Hi Paul , IPAF have issued last years figures for mewp fatalities there were 32 deaths up on previous years of those 9 were falls 8 electrocutions 6 overturns 4 entrapment and 4 mechanical failures 20 of those deaths were in the USA 2 in the Uk they estimate that there are 1.5 million mewps working worldwide. I would expect all the falls occurred because operatives were not harnessed up they do not go into trade specific accidents but most will be construction related,I also think the collective measures include harnesses as well as guard rails .
  17. What are ropes and harnesses if not man made also should we arrive on site by horse rather than truck ? In all climbing there is an equipment element to trust in eg Petzl Zig Zag also trees sometimes have hidden faults made by nature .
  18. It would be classed as change of use to commercial ,we have a site which we have just been served an enforcement notice on ,it's a woodland with nearest neighbour 400m away no chainsaws used just telehandler an hydraulic splitter and drying shed for which we have consent under permitted development 17 years down the line we have the enforcement on us and to appeal the notice will cost us over £5k in planning consultant fees alone . The notice says change of use from woodland to woodland and processing timber for commercial purposes. My point is you may get away with it for a while but as others have said sooner or later some nimby will complain and the council will always respond causing you more grief than a few logs sales are worth!!
  19. Fair enough I agree if you own the machine and operate it you know its history and maintenance record ,but machines vary greatly with their controls and feel some manufacturers are silky smooth and make the operator feel very comfortable others are not so good I've been in a 90 metre bronto and 101 metre Ruthmann which were steady as rocks to 14 metre which would scare you silly so I know what you mean.
  20. No only if the timber is for your own use otherwise it will be deemed as commercial use not agricultural .
  21. If you hate mewps so much and think that they are so dangerous why on earth would you want to buy one ?? You made the case both for and against mewps maybe you've just been using the wrong machines (wobbly ones) you can use them for far more than just hedges. Keep on climbing while your young and fit.
  22. Why not Dean? If you have invested good money in purchasing a mewp then it is in your own interest to utilise it as much as possible. I agree that ignorance is bliss having owned and operated our own mewp for 17 years you realise what an asset they can be and the monthly payments on a good mewp can be considerably less than the monthly salary of a good climber with out the holidays! The opinions of some people that they are dangerous and that they don't trust them is surprising as they are quite willing to trust their man made ropes harnesses etc or are they just unsure of something they have never tried,a good mewp operator takes time to train just like a climber and an odd days mewp usage here and there is not going to keep you proficient just like a climber. I also think that if people used a good quality stable mewp with plenty of capacity both in height and outreach they would change their opinions.
  23. Sorry should have mentioned we have 2 neighbours who will act as witnesses that we have been importing and processing logs for 12 or 13 years I also have pictures of the site at that time with my young children sitting in the old tractor we used for splitting, I think the lady of the manor has her eyes on our wood to add to her estate/ garden, she does seem to have a direct line to our local authority as despite our and our neighbouring farmers protests some of his land and our woodland was recently included in a conservation area which of course includes her house:thumbdown:
  24. Hi has anybody had to apply for a certificate of lawful use for their yard ,we have owned a woodland for 15 years now and were given consent to put up a drying shed initially for the timber produced in the woodland ,in fact the barn was built with larch from the thinnings.a new neighbour / lady of the manor has moved in and has been in touch with our local planning enforcement and we are in breach of planning because we transport logs in for splitting from our arb operations . Has anybody had a similar problem any advice would be welcome.
