  1. The auto feed on a 9 inch bandit wouldn't cut in as quick nor would it spit shards back at you ! It's a decent machine but at 65 hp a bit underpowered for 10 inch and looks a bit light build wise once some big timber goes through it. Might be cheaper once imported and easier to tow though.
  2. Where are you based?
  3. Hi , I know all these things collectively add up to put you on a bit of a downer, but as your business grows things like thefts breakdowns etc happen as you get bigger more complex and expensive machinery,2 years ago I had a boom fault on a mewp £6k chipper clutch £1.5k and a quad and trailer nicked in the space of a month. All you can do is keep your head down and carry on and have a glass or 2 of that good French wine.
  4. I agree I was one of those who got taken by Connaught, for 2k I got £8 back the other week !! After 3 years KPMG partners got £700 an hour even junior clerk was charged at £200 per who were the crooks ? Answer both of them!! Most commercial clients I have are ok if you know you they are going to take time to pay add it on at the pricing stage .
  5. Too right !
  6. I have nearly everyday, roadside trees, dead trees dismantles ,crown lifts etc depends on the Mewp but very quick set up times less than 3 min you can be at your cutting point .I agree with you on ease of working in some situations and if you have one you tend to use it,if you have to hire one in it becomes a bit like a crane only if I really need to. At the end of the day everybody's businesses and business models are different and so they should be.
  7. But is your time???
  8. That's exactly what I do when I do jobs with my MEWP quicker than climbing
  9. That depends entirely on what sort of mewp you use and most importantly it's outreach and postioning.using a mewp would make it easier to take off smaller sections bit by bit. In 28 years I've never had a tree collapse on a mewp yet. if he can get the job with the price of the mewp then go for it .
  10. He's right he does have the power to do that, the enforcement officer on our case visited our site 11 times and saw or heard nothing but still investigates every phone call this neighbour makes because they have to,hence our appeal We applied for an LDC,130 pages long dates receipts witness statements under oath it is supposed to be decided by a councils legal department but our doesn't have one and factor theirs out ,the decision was made 4 weeks after the deadline date for a decision by the enforcement officer ,not how it should be done so hopefully we will get clarification at the inquiry.
  11. Not true ,the onus of proof is firmly on you to prove more than 10 years continuous use or change of use. I have a planning inquiry against an enforcement notice next month all down to 1 neighbour with too much time on his hands. The previous advice is correct get representation record everything and in my experience don't trust the enforcement officer as sometimes they have an agenda.
  12. No in a conservation area in a small rural village but with good neighbours very important!!
  13. Yes they do ,they can put restrictions on the o licence ours is just for 1 vehicle upto 7.5 ton it's a restricted licence it depends on what you apply for mine is at my domestic address hence weight limit and exit forward gear which is fine and all I need.
  14. Hi we have a mewp on nissan cabstar, the Renault maxity is the same ,it's a joint venture between nissan and Renault Our cabstar has 130hp engine which is plenty of power for our mewp which is 3.5 tonne the 110 hp may be a little under powered with a full load and chipper. We find the cab good spacious and it drives well and take the load well. I've seen the truck your looking at and it looks very clean and tidy with a good body and not a bad price.
  15. Sometimes referred to as 'pissards horrible' there very susceptible to fungal attack ,look for root damage next door ,how old is the tree? Most of then have had enough by about 40 years old!!
  16. 48 and IPAF certified.
  17. Lucky man ,everybody's business model is different .
  18. Yes I agree you can only do the work that is there and tree work is becoming more seasonal which is not great cash flow wise if you employing several people.
  19. So are you working the other 2 days? Or is it just a part time business ? Think what you could be making if you worked 5 days a week.
  20. Yes probably next time they will expect the same cheap rate! I don't think anybody is seriously proposing a cartel what they are saying is what ever your business model is big or small do your sums run it like business and charge a rate that values the level of skill our industry demands. Also sometimes it takes a while for people to go bust by the time that happens they have had a big effect on the local market.
  21. My comment was not aimed at you personally but the example you gave of people staying under the vat threshold. Like you I have been registered for 28 years with all the pros and cons associated with being a tax collector for HMRC !!
  22. So how long do you stay at sub £400 a day for ? Your on a looser there as inflation goes up housing rent etc also all your suppliers prices move upwards and are not static. Would the threat of having to register for vat stop you archiving a good turnover and profit? £81 k is not a great turnover for a 3 man team .
  23. I totally agree, what about depreciation service costs , add your in your time for quoting jobs as well.Until we as an industry start charging realistic and sustainable prices which enable us to build a business and have a decent lifestyle were never going to be recognised as a true industry. What happens when you need to replace kit or get hit with a big repair bill on truck or chipper ,think what can I get for doing the job not what can I do it for ,other industries do .
