  1. BMW x3 2.0 d we get 43 mpg out of ours very reliable and handles very well ours has done 2 winters and is fine in snow or ice and 30 k out of the first set of tyres, Vw Tiguan is good too.
  2. Point taken ,but as I read the post it was a competitive tender for works so no room for ambiguity otherwise how can you compare like with like tenders, its too open ended especially for a local authority who should know better .
  3. How does ("consider felling or reduction " ) comply with anything in BS 3998 if the consultant / tree officer / inspector is sitting on the fence then they shouldn't be in the job, they are paid for their expertise and should use it and be clear and decisive unless he meant a 100% reduction!!of course.
  4. Is £65 an hour a lot compared to an accountant , solicitor or liquidator ,we have been informed by the liquidators of a company that owed us money that an administrator will be charged out at£327 per hour and a senior partner at £600 ,so£65 including travel, professional indemnity insurance which you must have is not out of the way really. Personally I tag trees on development sites but for roadside safety inspections I get the spray can out !
  5. We did years of call outs for our local council including 1987 1991 and 1999 the last night we did we started at 5.30 pm to 4.30 am and stuck in our bill only to be told by the highways technician directing us that his boss had told him he should have asked us for a price for every job as we arrived at it !! What a joke as you get older you get wiser,I'll gladly let you young ones do all the charitable work helping all them people as you put it ,I will stick to my known regular customers who need us and pay our rates. Call out work can be a minefield and you want to be sure who you are working for that's my old boys opinion,in business experience does still count for something Treework is no different.
  6. Quad no problem front wheels in the air plenty of revs with Rory in charge of it!! Things very busy at the moment working the Ruthmann MEWP hard and training the apprentice up and trying to keep the old one under control .
  7. Looks like a lump of Willow to me!! ,what are you using the willow for Dan? You could do with borrowing our Honda Big Red to tow it no marks on the grass then! How are you by the way?
  8. Hi I don't know about the older versions but the one we've got is a300 d4d ,its a single rear wheel and has a gross vehicle weight of 3000kg,the 350 has twin rear wheels and a gvw of 3500kg they both have the same d4d engine. We get on well with ours as its a second vehicle for delivering logs carrying stump grinder etc it has a bigger capacity than a hilux our main vehicle is a 7500kg with bandit chipper.
  9. Hi the ones we've got on the truck at the moment are Hankooks this is our second set and they last very well they are a winter tyre with m and s pattern, before that we had continentals again winter tyre m+s pattern,I know in Europe some of the cabstars come with hankook winter on from new ,we bought a new cabstar to build a mewp on 18 months ago and it was uk supplied and came with continental s on
  10. We've got a 2009 300d single rear wheels with mud and snow tyres it works fine and is a great little truck for log deliveries and towing small chipper ,it goes like a rocket on the road and can get in narrow gaps etc. I always thought that on a farm you need a tractor or telehandler not a truck!
  11. Sequoia sempervirens - the coast redwood is a very valuable timber used for construction ,floors etc similar to Douglas fir ,there are several groves growing very well in the uk 120+ feet in 50 years the rfs have a grove near Welshpool ,the Leighton grove. Sequoiadendron giganteum- the sierra redwood named after the area it grows in the Sierra Nevada ,we named it wellingtonia ,the Americans name theirs after generals too ,General Grant these are the true giant redwoods ,the timber is not the same as the coastal redwood ,its more brittle and not really used for construction .
  12. Hi I got 3 woodburners 2 stovax a 5kw a 8 kw and a 12 kw invicta if you've got a free supply of wood and always will have they are well worth it, buy slightly bigger than you need and it will throw heat out around the house also you can get a bigger log in which saves time and effort !
  13. I sure you have to clear the finance prior to sale or from the proceeds of the sale as the machine technically belongs to the finance company until you have repaid in full! I don't think a purchaser can take on your finance payments without being credit checked etc very few companies will transfer as their agreement is with you .
  14. Hi ,my understanding is that if you have a pre 97 licence you are allowed a trailer of 750 kg behind a 7.5 tonner to give gross vehicle weight of 8.25 tonnes . I have C1E which allows me up to 11 tonnes so a 7.5 tonner and a trailer of 3.5 tonnes or in my case a 7.5 ton Man and 3 tonne Bandit 150 XP so with your 5.5 tonner + vermeer you should be under 8.25 tonne ,you still have to abide by taco rules etc.
  15. I agree with both comments
  16. I too have taken on my son on this scheme ,he is doing the level 2 trees and timber block release at Askham Bryan, everything is funded including accomodation ,travel ,food at college and all certification,he is 16 and stays on campus for 9 block weeks, the college administers the whole scheme ,the have visit us to do a H and S audit I think it is a great scheme but does depend greatly on the candidate and their aptitude and keenness to learn ,we have had issues with apprentices in the past from our local college but that was more to do with their own commitment,28 days sick in the first 5 months is not a good start to anybody's career!!
  17. Sounds just like my old man he's 77 years old and was felling ash in a woodland for two days last week like a true pro ,his favourite saying is sawdust gets in the blood as well as I'd rather wear out than rust out ,typical old forester! Me I'm 48 and have climbed since 16 but have had my own mewp for 18 years now which does extend your up top working life considerably
  18. Unlike the shorts boys!!
  19. The ultimate Arb vehicle depends entirely on what sort of work you are doing and what your needs are ,some times I don't have to tip for several days the extra capacity comes in handy when we are taking down large leylandii etc which we would not bother to log up ,waste of time!! Also I have markets for good quality woodchip so larger diameter softwood makes good chip. I said that we did not need off road capability were in East Anglia which is Mostly Flat and Dry and most of our work is domestic or roadside/site. The Figure of 37k came from a quote we had 18 months to 2 years ago for an iveco / scam to mount an access platform on in Europe and was just for a chassis cab . Obviously things have gone up since it became an Iveco:001_rolleyes:
  20. Hi Jon ,that's the list price for the 3.5 tonne version single cab chassis before any discount + vat the 5.5 tonne and double cabs are a quite a bit more ,we looked at one but we don't do that much off road work so went down the 7.5 tonner route which is much smoother and better suited to our work ,
  21. Hi we have a MAN 7.5 TGL 8.180 7.5 tonner with a bandit 150 Xp 12 inch chipper this set up means I have to have hgv but it gives us great carrying capacity .the Iveco 4x4 you mention is a nice piece of kit but has very little carrying capacity for the size and cost(37k plus body) of the vehicle, you need a decent capacity for a big chipper to fill and horse power to tow it ,our truck will hold 10 cubic metres and we can fill it in 35-40 min.i hope this helps you.
  22. Hi chaps I like the chipper it looks quite compact ,did you try a bandit ? Either 9 or 12 inch I had a look at the Vermeer website and the auto feed / stress control seems to not stop the feed quick enough meaning it dribbles chips on the floor behind the truck,Bandit have an auto reverse system that stops this are you able to adjust the auto feed on the vermeer?
  23. Hi Steve I couldn't agree more our old machine is still working on daily hire and sold for 35% of its original purchase price after 9 years ,not bad depreciation .New machine is out every day mostly on our own tree work . What's the working height and outreach of your versilift Steve did you buy it new?Phil.
  24. Love the photos ,I visited the tall trees grove 25 years ago got off the greyhound at the visitor centre and caught the forest service minibus to the grove ,never saw the girl ,I even stayed at the redwood youth hostel near Crescent city maybe she wasn't born then!! Again fantastic photos great light conditions.
  25. We've had this one a 18 months now before this one we had a 22m on a sprinter from the same manufacturer for 9 years very solid reliable machines but German and expensive you get what you pay for I think with mewps
