  1. Tacho exempt or not its still worth putting them in, tacho`s can in some cases save you loads of grief. A guy in a truck had a head on crash down a country lane, everyone was kicking off about speeding trucks, tacho proved he never went over 15mph down the lane, case dismissed. Bob Found a big leather wallet a few years ago to keep the tacho`s and all my other cards in , save`s having to remember tacho history when jumping in and out of other trucks.
  2. It may be a bit tight on occasion Steve but doable http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arb-trucks/65296-bit-tight.html Good idea Steve ,this could work if you get enough support together with builders and landscapers. Bob
  3. I have told the story before Tom but here is a shorthand version. Our Mog which is Ag registered was stopped by traffic cops many years ago pulling a trailer with a tractor mulcher on board. They asked the driver what he was doing and where he was going and they basically told him that the vehicle was being used for transportation so he should have a class1 hgv, should be taxed as an hgv, running on white diesel, plated, on an o`license, the trailer should be plated and the list went on. The summons when it turned up was about half an inch thick , fortunately for the driver the case had timed out by the time it got to court but its a very serious list of offences if caught using ag vehicles for transport. No more Mogs or tractors used for carting gear about in this camp, get traffic plod that know their stuff and its a big deal. One of these vehicles involved in an accident may well get scrutinised and one would have to wonder if the insurers would attempt to waive a disclaimer. Bob
  4. The tractor /trailer/red diesel scenario could well end in tears if you were to be involved in a serious accident. Probably be a lot more grief than a marginally overloaded transit, they would make pages out of the tractor offences were you to get caught. Best keep some lube in the cab. I am surprised AA,Worksafe,Chas and Smas have not poked their noses into the safe and legal transportation of waste timber from jobs. Perhaps if they did the playing field would level out. Bob
  5. I dont want to read about it Joel, I need pictures Bob
  6. Its simple Chris, the question should read " should I run legal or illegal ?" Illegal Overloaded 3.5 tonner Ag registered mog on domestic tree work. Ag registered tractors/trailers on domestic tree work Overloaded 4x4 tippers. Legal 3.5 ton truck with three guys and the tools, nose weight of a chipper and nothing in the back. Mog registered as a commercial, plated, on white diesel, taxed accordingly , run on an O license and driven with appropriate driving license. The 7.5 + ton truck is starting to look good Bob
  7. FL series Deutz truck engine Mick not sure of the HP/model but makes gobs of torque at low rpm`s Great Bob but is it a hassle having to do a few grinder sweeps then get in the cab to shuffle back a bit, then repeat? The drawbar pushes out app 2 mts on a slider Al ( bit like a hiab) so does not need to move for stumps less than about six feet in diameter. Note the heap of grindings, that lot goes under the deck so you dont need to move even for them Bob
  8. Let them get on with it, it will all end in tears just like anything the council try and do. Bob
  9. Fifty or so Chestnut and Oak stumps to grind on a job we are doing. A few monsters in there, one is full of metal and has killed a few chains so will be ground as is, its about ten feet in diameter and stands six feet tall.
  10. Cant beat a decent crane, there are some cranes on trucks that could be in the next road and still reach in http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/picture-forum/67260-crane-beast.html Bob
  11. I have found in most cases if a truck wont go into a drive the property is normally so small you can reach in and grab the gear out. Bob
  12. Its still a more realistic capacity for a small arb team though Tom. Edit: I dont go with the access argument either, I cant think of a single job where we have not managed to get our trucks in. There is only a few inches difference between a Transit and a truck, I have poked the artic into many domestic driveways. Bob
  13. I have noticed a decline in the Mog/tractor trailer approach around here in recent years and a very big increase truck use. One outfit has got an eight wheel tipper and grab, that looks like a useful bit of kit, quite a few ten tonners about and plenty of 7.5 tonners with big chip boxes. For fear of repeating myself throwing trees on the floor is the easy bit, the cost/time is the clean up. Can you afford not to run a truck? Bob
  14. I reckon an 18 tonner is a sensible size truck for general arb work, it should have enough capacity to keep a team busy for most of the day. Trucks are the way forward , its a no brainer. Bob
  15. Cant see the transit being much use outside of road work. How about one of the vw or merc 4x4 vans, at least they can turn a wheel on a blade of grass. Just thoughts Bob
  16. Steve if the reduction box has no brass or bronze bushes and is running on bearings you will be ok, if on bushes run the GL4 as suggested . Bob
  17. t4Ke a tRip d0Wn two yaw nEerest maReener e6g. Lucas Oil UK - Synthetic SAE 75W-90 M8 Marine Gear Oil bOd
  18. A leccy fake one will do for the moment [ame] [/ame]
  19. Any of the little French car derived vans are good value, I think a good few of them are badge engineered and use the same running gear. Bob
  20. Glued the neck back onto the trailer, he should get the rest of the fabrication work and boards back on next week:001_smile:
  21. I was thinking the same and really like the product but am slightly concerned they never recalled the machines in the first place. Bits of broken up bearing cases getting into the works could get dangerously ugly. Bob
  22. Call barring is a wonderful thing TCD:thumbup1: Bob
  23. There are too many other screws/adjusters to avoid for this to work on just a slot Mull, it only takes a few minutes to make another adaptor. You could just chop up old bars for that section but it may be a bit springy, the 50x10mm bar is a good solid platform , easy to drill and cost`s pennies. Have you tried drilling a chainsaw bar? Bob
