  1. These two bob sand blast guns are worth a mention, use kiln dried paving sand. Before we start you dont want to be breathing this stuff so get a good mask. A thousand and one uses, one that we can all relate to is crap and dirty connections in trailer sockets. Hard if not impossible things to get clean. Trailer socket the lads ripped off one of the trucks by backing it into a heap of crap. Pick out the worst . Less than a minute with the blaster.
  2. Woody we get the same spiel from Massey etc when they stop fitting or change suppliers of these things, pretty sure if you can identify the make of solenoid that there will some on a shelf somewhere. Bob
  3. Most of these landowners directly or indirectly employ the services of a woodland management company that oversees the whole circus, I don't think many of the smaller woodland owners ever see much of a return on timber if any, most of it is swallowed up in management, maintenance and restocking. Bob
  4. To run that refuse truck you are going to need an Olicence, if you have one there are better alternatives. There was a street trees crew running one around Putney a few years ago,as per any refuse truck it had built in traffic management/ road block capabilities. Bob
  5. The only real difference between a stationary diesel engine and one from an old school car/van is the weights in the injection pump. Stationary engines are normally set to max out at much lower rpm’s , this can’t be achieved by just turning down the max fuel , it’s the governor weights inside the pump that would need changing. I have used a contraption called a speedic in the past which is a belt run engine speed controller. Bit like rocking horse shit to find these days but they will do the job in the same way, pre set the revs as you would on a chipper and the speedic will operate a separate arm to the pump, this keeps an otherwise 4500rpm engine in check. Can also be done with generator speed controllers and servos, if anyone is interested I will post up how. Bob
  6. A lot of guys out there using modified artic trailers Paul. Not sure what's left in the way of a legal payload, with the weight of these modern tractors/trailers combo`s some must be down to under ten tons. Bob
  7. Not sure how others roll, on the small amount of domestic work we do we price in stump grinding/removal as a separate entity. The majority of our domestic customers seem happy to leave the stumps and go with the saving, most likely the reason there is more for the landscapers as and when they come across them. Most of our commercial work is complete stump removal, developers are increasingly anti grinding because of the problems laterals cause them with service laying etc. In forestry stumps at best only get buffed off with a mulcher. Bob
  8. Joe I got a satnav/dashcam for the truck, that's got aux connections for reversing or side cameras. About £130 on Ebay.
  9. I am with john on this, the bigger the better. Ours is 6mts and only just manages to tip in the middle of a high cube walking floor. Its not just about tipping over the side, the clock is ticking for the driver and they need to be evenly loaded. Bob
  10. That really wouldn't be an issue providing the ground wasn't made up of rock, as I said earlier the bore would be10x diameter deep so at five feet down there would be little to no chance of disturbing the tree roots. These machines tow in the pipe as they go, the start hole would have to be long enough to accommodate this. Bob
  11. As above moling ( ground displacement hammers) would be the way to go, not sure what size service you are running but as a rule of thumb a mole needs to be at a minimum depth of 10x its diameter. We have these up to 125mm diameter, very accurate at over 25mts in previously undug ground conditions, not so clever in landfill or made up ground. Bob
  12. You can run a grab and rotator on any machine if its piped for a breaker and you don't want to hold the grab in the vertical plane, as in just picking up or handling/stacking brash/sticks.All you need to do is mount the rotator straight onto the end of the arm , divert the crowd ram pipes to the grab and use the breaker circuit for the rotation. Bob
  13. Never had you down as a Luddite Mick , how have you managed all this mayhem without ever having worked for us? Bob
  14. Yes you can drive an lgv on private tax class, its no different to the bigger horseboxes. It will still need plating though ,you may also struggle to privately insure a truck with a crane or hook loader . A privately registered lgv with a shipping containers on the back may also be a bit of a red flag for eagle eyed plod or DVSA. Bob
  15. Sounds like a job for something like an eighteen tonner, you will need a mother of a crane to place loaded containers any distance other than next to the truck.May be better off with h5 type hook containers, you could do that with a ten tonner. Bob
  16. Getting a lot more of this total stump clearance these days, a lot of these developers don't just want them ground, they want the stump and all the laterals removed. One of the developers we do a lot for cited costings for dealing with the laterals and it was substantial, left in laterals affect all the outside trades on a site. Its a job for a big excavator and a power rake. Bob One of these on a thirteen tonner.
  17. Pretty much. CPC isnt an issue anyway. Exemptions from needing Driver CPC You do not need Driver CPC if you’re using the vehicle for: non-commercial carriage of passengers or goods carrying material or equipment you use for your job, as long as driving is less than 30% of your rolling monthly work driving for someone you work for, or your own agriculture, horticulture, forestry, farming or fisheries business, as long as driving is less than 30% of your rolling monthly work driving within 62 miles (100 kilometres) of your base - but the vehicle cannot be carrying passengers or goods, and driving a lorry, bus or coach cannot be your main job driving to or from pre-booked appointments at official vehicle testing centres driving lessons for anyone who wants to get a driving licence or a Driver CPC maintaining public order - and the vehicle is being used or controlled by a local authority rescue missions or in states of emergency You also do not need Driver CPC if the vehicle is: is being road tested for repair, maintenance or technical development purposes either new or rebuilt and has not yet been taxed being used or controlled by the armed forces, police, fire and rescue service, emergency ambulance service, prison service or people running a prison or young offender institution limited to a top speed of 28mph
  18. Its all the same really including drivers hours, any road vehicle should be kept/maintained in a roadworthy condition, all of them can be pulled over and checked over by dvsa at any time. Aside of an olicense the only difference between a privately run truck and one on an olicense is the maintenance regime./paper trail.Unfortunately most owners of privately run trucks only fix what a vehicle fails on come mot time, the truck run on an olicense should be able to meet test standards at any time. Bob
  19. Sounds like you can run on a restricted o license, you wont need a transport manager and you could probably get away with eight weekly PMI`s.They cost around £180 so other than the o license application you should be good to go, there is a bit of paper shuffling to do but nothing too time consuming..Its not the can of worms folk think it is and its a game changer. Bob
  20. Thats the one Mick, one tree with a dead kite in it has to stay there until defra advise otherwise. Bob
  21. Laminated glass is thermally more efficient, its probably the better option and the sort of thing any decent glass company can cut, cab glass and the like offer a mobile cutting/fitting service.. Bob
  22. Clearing some conny under watch and brief, this is about a quarter of them. Trusty telehandler still doing its thing.
  23. The two stroke petrol drills are a good choice if there are a lot of on site holes to drill. There are a few flavours, Ryobi or Stihl are good. Bob
  24. Mooching about the yard this morning having a bit of a tidy up, noticed a full dumpy bag so had a gander thinking it was one of the bags full of rakings and that it may need to go on the fire. Kin bag is nearly brimmed with soft drink cans, I started them off with this bag a few months ago because there were cans scattered around all over the place, cannot believe how much of this crap the nippers here have gotten through and this is probably only half of it. Some of this gear is expensive, its no wonder these kids are always skint, just saying. Bob
  25. I find it a lot easier backing an artic + trailer into a gateway than I do a transit + chipper. Bob
