  4. Gary rashered off all the wide oak planks in two days on his Alsakan. That was with the help of the yard forklift and one of my labourers. As big J points out without them production would be considerably slower. The Mizer made very short work of cutting some oak planks for the bed of the low loader . Two hours ish for these and some beams.
  5. They were going to introduce a £1 charge to use the toilet a few years ago but dropped it. The attractive initial costs of these flights are just a Sprat to catch a Mackerel. Bob
  6. Dont worry about your age, we have two guys still working that are in their mid 70`s. They can still hold their own against the nippers , what they lack in muscle they make up for with commitment , knowledge, work ethics and reliability. Bob

  10. If you are buying in from any of these suppliers they should give you a COC (chain of custody )cert or number with the invoice. Bob
  11. We were offered tea and biscuits on a job and they were duly brought out. We never had the mugs in our hands for more than two seconds when the handles fell off the lot of them and smashed on the floor. The cheap skate Mrs Miggings had glued them back on just to keep back for the oiks like us . Bob
  12. Thats going to make a great working classic:thumbup1: Looks like the little fella is keen to get on with it http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=188082&stc=1&d=1440056225
  13. When Swanny had his sawmill all his sawdust and offcuts went into this rather fancy incinerator that heated his joinery shop. Being fan assisted it was virtually smokeless . Bob
  14. We just use chain oil on ours, had no issues with this. Bob
  15. A good used aebi tractor would be worth a look. Pto / hydraulics back and front . They will work on serious slopes and have a very low center of gravity, on our one the seat is adjustable so when working sidways round steep banks you sit straight. Bob http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=187942&stc=1&d=1439919926
  16. About £1.10p per liter around here for derv. A bit different to the 8.6p per liter it was when I first hit the road https://www.theaa.com/public_affairs/reports/Petrol_Prices_1896_todate_gallons.pdf Bob
  17. No lone working here for a few years now, not so much our doing but pressure from from our clients. The only exception is the tractor or digger drivers. Bob
  18. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologised to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man. And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, …..and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."
  19. I think thats right, they can make up their own rules and request their staff uphold them. No issues with any of this around here whether is an IBC full of derv or a 205 ltr barrel of petrol ( which according to the blurb below is wrong). Its interesting about the HSE`s take on the safe quantites . Extract  plastic containers up to 10 litres (pre vious regulations restricted this to 5 litres)  metal containers up to 20 litres (previ ous regulations restricted this to 10 litres) How much petrol can I store on a vehicle? You can store up to 30 litres of petrol in a maximum of two suitable portable petrol containers in a vehicle (including boats and aircraft).
  20. I think it comes back to intended use, cheap chinese will serve you well if you are not beating it to death on a daily basis, if your are then you need to step up to a quality unit. Edit, the grab on our artic trailer is Jonsered with a rotorex rotator, it opens up to about 2.5mts. That has been abused for over fifteen years now and never had any repairs in that time. From memory that was about £750 from ebay. Bob
  21. Price and application come to mind here. Some of these cheap grabs/rotators would probably last a lifetime if only used occasionally and on a small crane. The ones I have been looking at recently at shows just dont look heavy duty enough in construction to poke up with prolonged use at their advertised capacity. If on a budget I would go for a quality rusty second hand grab over a Chinese shiny new one. That big uniforest grab looks the biz Bob
  22. Its definitely alive and well here its also popping up in among area`s like fern and bramble that I dont want to disturb. Despite it raining here for two days now the ground is still like concrete and it snaps off while pulling. This only a fraction of it:thumbdown:
  23. Just a bit
  24. Once a month a load of us do catch up at the Indian up the road, foods fantastic and gets washed down with plenty of the bottled Cobra beer Thunder box takes a bit of a hiding the next day though  Bob
