  1. Just wondering whether anyone can identify this fungi and whether it is going to affect the ash trees health.
  2. Have the same mower as you and its been great. I dont use it as much as you do but it gets a few hours a week. So far its been a great mower and leaves a nice neat job. Only issue we have had is the pull cord wears very quickly if pulled through the metal ring it sits in. Instead we pull it straight from the engine and it seems to be fine.
  3. I've had a polytunnel for 2 years now and have found them great. Logs need to go in part seasoned to stop mould growing on them but when the sun comes out they dry the logs very fast. And its cheaper than an agri building. I used Premier Polytunnels I think.
  4. Take VAT off all safety equipment and you will end up paying for it somewhere else. Boots and helmets are VAT free as they are worn in practically ever industry. The amount of money saved by the government from people not ending up in A and E with broken head and feet justifies the VAT exemption. That would probably not be the case with other safety equipment, so no it shouldnt all be VAT exempt.
  5. They sound fine to me. Seasoned tends to be classed as 25% and under.
  6. Saw it into rings, place at the roadside with a sign saying fiver a ring. It will be gone within seconds
  7. Cheers, found it Interesting little setup, it would be good to see how Dean is doing with it now.
  8. I had a look on ebay and the seeds pretty cheap and I will buy a few in. Bit of a stupid question, with seeds can you tip them onto a tray of soil and then plant the ones that have germinate and leave the rest till they become undormant or is it best to put straight into pots? Aborist, where is that thread do you know? Had a look earlier for relevant threads but didnt find too many.
  9. Great, thanks for the advice Alec. I think as you say, I will just have to experiment to find out what works best. I am going to try seeds and cuttings, but mainly cuttings, as I want to grow different varieties of trees but don't want to spend much money. The only mature trees that produce seeds around us are Oak,Sycamore and Ash, and I want to be growing a lots of Alder, Cherry, Beech and Rowan which are not old enough to be producing seeds yet. I will update my progress, hoping to start getting cuttings next weekend.
  10. Looking to start propagating trees from cuttings. Have read up on the internet the basics of how to do it but have a few question. What's the best growing medium to use? Is water any good? Now is the time to start collecting cuttings, but once in the growing medium how long until you can plant in the woods? Is it better to plant in a pot and grow for a year or come spring time plant it straight into the woodland with a shelter? Thanks in advance.
  11. Lots of those little grubs in the wood Im taking out now, and lots of wood wasps about in the forest atm. I was filling up the saw when a wasp came flying over, dont think I have ever moved so fast in my live Big horrible flying things.
  12. Do they die when the wood is dry or can they still survive?
  13. Its annoying because if more people wanted to pick up it would make my life so much easier. But all though the majority of people I would have no problem with picking up some it would only take one person to mess everything up and all of the sudden I will have lost a lot.
  14. And what a numpty I turned out to be Im going over tomorrow actually and Ill take some photos, I think you will be happy with the progress
  15. Thats what I say to most people is that my insurance wont cover to anyone else on sight, think Ill keep it that way.
  16. Just wondering whether any of you allow people to pick up wood from your yard? Having a few new customers asking to pick up their firewood but I am a bit wary of doing it. Would mind if the regulars asked.
  17. Fair enough but fuel, breakdowns and delivery are needed whether the wood is waste or roundwood. If you can get the labour cost to fall in line with what it would cost to get roundwood plus processing labour then it could be worth it
  18. After the brilliant advise I gave you on processing waste and you're now going to chip the wood 100 tonnes should make about 150 cbm of firewood which you could sell and make £13,500 at £90 a cbm. Not a bad return on your investment. And the amount of manual labour needed to process the wood should be made up for by not having to buy then wood (I assume). If you dont fancy the labouring get a young lad to help I bet it is one hell of a pile, got any pics of it?
  19. To be honest, it will probably be cheaper for you to hire a tipper van for the day and do several trips in that on a weekend or spare day. On a tipper you could easily handle 4 cubes of wood (if in bags and seasoned rather than green).
  20. Could be a mountain of gold to someone. If it was in my area I would be interested.
  21. Cant help you on finding anyone with wood but you will have more of a chance asking for softwood, fine for using in a boiler and there could well be someone looking to get rid of it to create more room on there yard.
  22. Also interested in these if the price is right.
  23. I know what your saying, but then you see the artics driving off with the infected timber dropping bark, needles and all sorts when it comes off site, makes people walking through infect sites quiet insignificant. The hills are looking pretty bare in South Wales from all the extraction they have been doing, a shame really
  24. Well if its like the winters we've been having for the last 5 years, it will be an extreme of something, rain, wind, cold or snow. Probably wont be able to tell until its actually happening, even then the forecast will be wrong. But as a log seller I predict a long, cold and snowy winter so start buying your logs now
