  1. What wrong with people wanting to buy softwood firewood?
  2. Have a look on here the same saw horse is £50. SAW HORSES - Accessories/Lubricants Buy UK Ive got one and they are brilliant! Well worth there money
  3. Thats weird, it was about 500 cheaper for me to have a people carrier. But much prefer my van haha
  4. Rather than looking at vans look at the likes of the Berlingo or Ford connect people carriers. The seats in the back can completely fold down so you'll have a van sized boot. Having a people carrier rather than a van will decrease the insurance big time. I currently have a Ford Connect and its a great little van.
  5. Yes I would be interested, Ill send you a PM.
  6. As regards to your first question why is firewood the price it is at the minute, what I would ask you is if the money is ok to make a living why haven't you gone into firewood all guns blazing selling at your price and start producing 800 tons a year? Im not being funny with you it just I believe there is a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to large scale firewood. And educating customers I agree with you, is key. Wood burns whatever it is as long as the wood is well seasoned. My educating has been good with my current customer base as most of them will buy 50/50 mixes rather than just hardwood, and when stocks are low, they are more than willing to buy just softwood. Even Certainly Woods have now started saying the softwood is a good alternative to hardwood firewood, might not be long till they are selling softwoods too.
  7. With your £60 a ton delivered in, I wouldn't say you get 2 cbm from it, 1.5 cbm if your lucky. In that case your paying £40per cbm. You reckon about 2hr15mins to process a cbm which at minimum wage would cost around £15. So to process your product costs £55 per cbm. Then take into account your overheads, vehicle insurance, yard rates/rent, yard and equipment insurance, along with all the maintenance for vehicles and equipment. It all adds up in the end. This is why firewood is good as a side business because if all your above overheads are needed for another part of your business then you can be making £45 profit.
  8. I don't see the problem with cash sales. I do all my sales through cash in hand and issue a delivery invoice when I have the cash. Any money then goes straight into my account so you can trace were the money goes. Obviously there are going to be a few sellers that don't declare there earnings but that's up to them. They will get caught one day and then that's one less competitor you have to deal with
  9. I don't think there will every be legislation in place for firewood and its quantities just due to the fact that there is so many contributing factors (moisture content, stacked, loosely thrown etc). Having legislation will probably be more of a headache for both the producer and the people ensuring the legislation is being adhered too. But as for my business looking beyond next winter, I will looking to grow it in a way that is sustainable. I don't believe in throwing huge amounts of money at something in an initial outlay. I started with an axe and a small car, I now have a yard, polytunnel, sheds, a van and some nice saws. So I cant really complain Just like natural selection, thing change and evolve and unless your willing to change and evolve then you will become history.
  10. Agree with Goaty. The amount of wood available will slowly go down and the price will increase so much that lots of people will pack up shop as its not worth the hassle. Then we will start import more wood and diseases probably.
  11. Cheers, quite interesting fact to know!
  12. Probably a stupid question, but I am guessing you still need a felling license to extract them?
  13. Or try the member called Dalynn on here. He has a mobile mill that can be hired, he is based in South Wales too.
  14. Hi Drew Have you tried The Old Mill Wood Yard? Old Mill Wood Yard - Firewood | Oak Flooring > South Wales There a bit far away (Swansea/Carmarthen way) but might be worth it if you can store a lorry load on the yard at a time. Hope this helps, Sam
  15. You should get about 2 bags per ton, so you should be looking at getting 24 from the tree.
  16. Cheer Graham, does look very similar to Norway maple pics on the internet. One of the guys that was sawing it said the wood was very heavy and burnt like oak on the fire. Don't know whether that ties in with Norway Maple or not.
  17. Hey Guys, Can anyone ID this tree for me. The leaves on it are quiet similar to hawthorn leaves.
  18. Got yourself a giant sling shot there :001_tt2:
  19. Hey Steve, Im doing billets as well this year, when it comes to selling the how do you dry the ends out if you've had a wet spell of weather? Or do you sell them like they with a few wet logs?
