  1. 290 56cc 390 64cc 290 3.7hp 390 4.6hp Same weight. I know what I would do but then im the overkill sort That said that's if it needs the complete topend not just piston. As spud says if you can salvage the cylinder and its original stihl then the meteor piston route is your best option. I would certainly change the bearings and seals whilst its apart. They just come out on the crank when you remove it. Just a case of pulling them off and replacing with new.
  2. If it does need a piston and cylinder then you may want to upgrade to the 390 cylinder and piston. Its a straight swap and gives you a bit more oomph. Just make sure the carb gets retuned once fitted.
  3. First check the fuel line and filter to make sure its not gone soft. Second check the impulse line and rubber inlet manifold for ant signs of splits or tears. Then as you suggest a carb strip and maybe new gasket kit, you may find its just a blocked mesh filter in the carb that's blocks as soon as it starts pulling more fuel thru under load. If you have a compression tester that's suitable for 2 strokes see what compression you have. I take it you have removed the exhaust to see the scoring?
  4. Doing some work for fed-ex I have to say they are the leaders in the delivery/courier league. As Rpb says there pricing is not the cheapest but they don't run a sliding scale on the weight unlike the others. Not knowing what service Rob uses but the A is all next day and the B is 3 day. None of this 5 day stuff. And if you get frequent deliverys via fed-ex they do require a signature for everything. However if you ask the delivery driver for a form to sign you can overcome this and he can leave the parcel somewhere safe that you declare every time so you haven't got to worry about being in to sign or go to a depot somewhere to collect.
  5. Lmao, Jon you really brighten my evening up buddy! The talk of andrex,99's and dogs and Mr.Whippys does worry me slightly or should that be disturb me I think im gonna bite the bullet buy a granberg hand grinder and some save edge files for good measure. Messaged Rob so waiting for a reply. I think its just as economic in the long run to buy an electric grinder as well as the time factor saving especially for the longer 36" and 28" bars and that doesn't even count for the minor wounds and suffering caused using hand files cutting the pinkys and stabbing myself numerous times as I cant be bothered to fit a handle on a file half the time...
  6. Yeah that's the thread in the link Dan. It appears save edge done quite well and stihl came off worse.
  7. Was that from Rob? Ive read elsewhere about the save edge files being good so wouldn't mind trying some if I can get some. Maybe I should get a few brands and see what suits me best.
  8. Partner 650 + 700 chop off saws for the -02 Theres a chainsaw derivative of them so prob fits them to.
  9. Who uses what brand chainsaw file and how do you find them? As time goes on I find Oregon files aren't what they used to be and was wandering if its just me I even clean them after every use now to try get a bit more life out of them. I tend to use stihl or Oregon chain which is quite hard and holds a good edge so prob kills files a bit quicker but wandering if its worth changing brands if theres better quality available?
  10. Good work Eddy Enjoy sharpening that chain when you hit a nail lol.
  11. You can buy 550xp off the shelf with 18" so husqy must deem it suitable. They say 3cc per 1" of bar as a rule of thumb so on that basis 18" would need 54cc. As Eddy says I think 18" is your best bet.
  12. Mink are very secretive creatures so suprising so many people see them on a regular basis? Much more likely to see a stoat or weasel than a mink. They are difficult to shoot or trap as they are so cautious. I do see the odd one or two wildfowling early in the morning in the estuarys or tidal rivers but prob only 4-5 sightings through the winter, I see a lot more otters etc .Even the mink hounds are lucky to find them around here. I guess theres higher density populations elsewhere than devon tho so maybe they are braver in the areas you see them. Afterall they have no predators as such apart from the human kind. I wouldn't think twice about pulling the trigger on one tho given the chance...
  13. Seen it on fb asking. There was a roaming brindle dog at south zeal which is only few mles away but it was solitary and not with any others. Its certainly active talk in the area. Do you know what breed dogs they are?
  14. Just check but I needed a stihl recoil spring for an 051 and it had a superseded number. I ordered it on the off chance it would fit and it was exactly the same spring just with the casing which made it easy to fit.
  15. Not had much to do on the chainsaw front. Got a mcculloch California in with a cream crackered coil. New one is £60!! Seems I cant get a s/h one anywhere so if anyone has a mcculloch part saw with a good coil I will happily buy it at a sensible price.
  16. Wont let me view it? Says its private?
  17. JD 9630 Rich (530hp). Utube it. They do a 9630t which is the tracked version. Bit big to run a chipper lol.
  18. Other half says it wont repair on its own. Spicy or rich foods alcohol or food with small pips may all aggrevate the problem. At night symptoms can get worse which can be helped by sleeping more upright. Im being the messenger boy here shes trying to explain it to me whilst I type lol. I thought my hernia (groin) wasn't pleasant but sounds like yours can cause many more issues. Least mine diet etc never came into it.
  19. That's what I had done 6 weeks ago TCD, been back to work a few weeks but still a bit crippling when I cough or sneeze etc. As for the O.P (woodworks) it wont mend on its own but can be controlled using the reflux drugs but go for the op if you can and get it sorted as you've probably guessed. Its a P.I.T.A having time off etc but for a long term fix over a lifetime of drugs and worrying about damaging it further I would think it was a decision easily made? (I don't know all this about yours btw the other halfs a nurse and just asked her lol!)
  20. Easily done apart from 1 major point no ones mentioned... PTO will normally run at 540rpm, hence you will need to gear it down using a reduction gearbox and that would be a big factor getting that sorted as much as anything.
  21. If it uses the same needle bearing on one end like the 075 I have a brand new one I managed to source. I Bought 2 just because I found 2 but only wanted 1 they are that bloody rare to find.
  22. Had a busy few days on various saws. Put new piston rings, bearings and seals in an ms210 020T plastic welded (well soldering ironed) a small hole in fuel tank, repaired stripped bar stud, refitted inlet manifold and fitted new a.v mounts, crank seals and fuel/vacuum line and filter. Carb clean on an 026 Built an 025/ms250 engine out of new parts and s/h bits I had knocking around and fitted it in an old 021 casing/tank (they are the same) and got it up and running. Decision now is whether to bar/chain it in 3/8 picco or .325 although most likely go the 3/8 route as have a sprocket and chain so just means buying a new bar.
  23. Like you say they certainly like to run on the rich side. Max torque hits around 5500rpm so they don't need to scream. You can block off the governor for another 1k or so but its doesn't improve the cut much just the sound. None of this chainbrake business, lightweightness and zero emissions these saws where made for real men
  24. You obviously realise they only rev to around 9k? Sounds like you may need a carb clean or maybe the plug you've fitted is duff else. Both can be done pretty quick on these saws, whilst the carb is off just make sure the inlet underneath it is all good, its plastic type but they can split.
  25. Ah never took any notice of that hole Barry or what it did. Under the cover was just choked solid with chip/dust/oil so was just being anal cleaning it and noticed no clip. Now you've pointed that out makes no sense to fit the circlip. As for the seals just thought whilst the saw was clean. partly stripped and being 15 years old it would make sense for the sake of a few quid? Its a saw for my own use btw
