  1. Whats up with the 394? Shame you wherent a little closer, I would've loaned you 1 of mine rather than see good wood go for logs (although im a prime candidate for it...)
  2. Is the trunk pretty straight and where there hardly any "low" branches? Most I see are normally dead straight up and almost perfectly round compared to normal oak.
  3. Man after my my own heart. Hate all this brake on brake off business and never use mine only to check it works now and again Ive never hidden the fact I don't like these 550/560 saws
  4. Fuel tank vent possibly tho normally shows up a bit quicker than that. Just open the fuel cap when it stalls, retighten and see if it starts.
  5. Gutless on the flat or general as well as just hills? Could be fuel pump again or boost pipes on the intercooler leaking. Assuming no unusual sounds or overheating? Most things would effect general allround driving.
  6. Or a dab of clear nail varnish on the thread of the mixture screw against the carb body normally works.

I think its debateable on speed in relation to petrol v tractor tbh. that would depend how good the tractor hydraulics are and I would say a decent 13hp petrol engine 16gph pump splitter would be much faster than the likes of a mf35 or older david brown using a similar ram. That said personally I wouldn't entertain a petrol engine splitter under 6hp. Why strain a small engine and make it cuff its guts out, and live a shorter lifespan and prob find a larger engine wouldn't use much more fuel as wouldn't work so hard. I think they both serve a purpose tractor and petrol splitters tho its just trying to match it to the environment you work in. As said if your likely to go a distance petrol wins. If your thinking of buying a tractor just to mainly split logs its a fairly large outlay you have to claw back. If your splitting mega logs tractor hands down.
  8. Just stripped one this afternoon which had leaking seals. They seem to be hard on crankseals. The other thing I would suggest after spuds suggestion of carb clean is the inlet manifold and impulse line. The back handle is separate from the main body of the saw yet both these rubber items are linked between the pair so movement can show up faults/airleaks on these to.

  10. Noone admit to using tampons?? They are good! Pine cones filled with oil ridden sawdust from under the chain cover off your saw is also very good.

  12. Bloody almost a taffy up there then lol. Just try visit a dealer and pick up and feel the saws as what suits one man wont always feel right to another. Personally I would say stihl but more on the grounds that spares are readily available and cheaper then Husqvarna and echo can take weeks to get spares and not as cheap when they do turn up.
  13. As a matter of interest where in Devon roughly? Sounds like you don't need to big a saw if the trees etc are quite young so its down to preference and what your local main dealer supplys. Radmores? The one thing I would say about echo tho is there spares are a bit hit and miss if ever it goes wrong.

  15. Like you say a decent high performance oil should be used but fuel/consumption is irrelevant as it will still be using 50/1 whatever the consumption is. However good oil doesn't always mean expensive is best and the most suitable. We all have our favourites and dislikes one way or another that's not to say whos right and whos wrong but the best oil is the one that doesn't seize the saw up

  17. Im more sketched out you paid £150 for a clutch on your 064? I have to say im with you on the dubious autotune systems. They (560xp) are cropping up now with scored pistons etc (to be fair most are prob straight gassed) but at £90 for a piston they aren't cheap to repair.

  19. Im with Barry on this 1. There are atleast 3 different hp measurements and different manufactuers use different ones so what may seem the same on paper feels different in hand. As for torque like Barry says and I think the best way of putting it is put a car and a 4x4 with equivalent hp, cc and weight at the bottom of a big hill both towing a 3 1/2 ton trailer and see what gets to the top of the hill first. Being dramatic its a bit like comparing your average 17 1/2 tonne 250hp lorry to a Subaru impreza turbo (250hp) towing a 16 tonne load. Power is developed in very different ways. Its torque that pulls a load not hp or cc. You can prob get remote control nitro cars and planes 6-7hp easily but doesn't mean to say they could pull a chainsaw chain in 12" of wood for that very reason.

  22. Again gaskets are still available if needed but by the looks of what you've made thatll do fine. Re the decomp you just remove it and get a plug that fits in its place if you want to. I prefer having a decomp as im lazy. New ones are again available for about £22 from stihl. For reference purposes the 051 and 075/076 share the same bottom end, its only the piston/cylinder that is different along with the way its bolted down, Carbs the same etc to. The only age specific differences to the bottom ends where most of the 075/076 saws had a manual chain oil plunger alongside the automatic adjustable oiler. Also obviously ears where added on later saws in respect of them having chain brakes to.
  23. Original mk1. Upgraded to the later 50mm top end after the 2nd seize more because the piston rings had lost there spring rather than bore damage (48mm originally) Still outcuts his ts400's so he has a soft spot to keep it running.
  24. The bane of my life came back in my life to haunt me today Partner k650 cut off saw.. In the past 9 months the coils gone down (common fault) then a mild seize which I managed to clean up, seized again several months later after being straight gassed, then a new carb kit and fuel line... Then today it returned, cut out half way thru cutting. Spark-tick Compression-150psi tick Fuel-nope Spoon of fuel down the plughole- tick (she fired) So carb strip and clean still no joy, restrip carb and still dry. Check and double check needle valve and diaphragms and all correct Ok best check fuel line/filter - tick all good there (no holes or blockages) After much head scratching and double checking of things it ended up being the main crank seal behind the flywheel had blown out!! Luckily had a new Husqvarna chainsaw seal the same size and put a new one in with a fine smear of quick setting gloop around it and a few pulls it lives again!
  25. Any particular reason you want the cranked handles? Toolstation do the same roughneck spades but with straight fibreglass handle for £30.
