  1. reading post about harris hawks becoming wild what bird would they breed with. unless one came across a rare meeting of another harris. so assume they must be loners but good hunters of rabbits and plenty of them to have. if they did breed with a buzzard i assume you would have a hazard: hawk:thumbup:
  2. on tonights programme is a piece on charcoal burning but the clever bit was the wood is up on a steep hill so have put in chutes to slide wood down to bottom. worth a look recording it so will se the full bit.
  3. re pointing of slabs as most of you do make it damp then spread into joints and trowel in with a bucket handle. now the debate i lay slabs on sharp sand cement mix. others say lay a hard base wit either cement dobs i hate or a thin mix of sharp sand cement. i think its a waste of time putting down a hard base if using harp sand cement mix thick enough do not lay many slabs but thats the way i lay them any better idears to my way. be good to know from those who do it a lot.
  4. thanks for all the positive comments, not just me but Hans who laid it aswell if your interested or any one else. trying to get a day when those who fancy having a go can talking with a couple of groups to see if it can be organised. its the insurance hence talking to groups who do this. the cost would be £10 for becoming a member. for the insurance side of things. plus need a hedge that is young to learn laying on a old hedge is difficult to do. soon as i have any firm details and dates will post. have already a number interested so will try and get it going.
  5. friend had a boat in dry storage in Southampton only a 16ft cabin cruiser but that was a millstone round there neck had to get the tides right to launch same coming back in. had to wash outboard in fresh water to stop the salt corroding inside of engine. they gave up and sold it. moorings around these parts need to be a rich man to have one £10 plus per foot a month. another friend is lucky he works in a marina so can keep his boat moored. has some fun in it. but not a cheap game fish finder, emergency kit,vhf radio, lights. plus keeping bottom clean and engine serviced. cheaper to charter a boat with a bunch of friends. have a good day and hand the boat back to the skipper at end of day
  6. that bit was the worse bit. the hazel was trying to get to the light and had gone up and twisted in a 180degree turn to reach the light when we laid some the top was sticking out some 10ft to the side made for interesting pleaching up the length of stem to bring in. re laying back even though there was a lot a lot was hanging outside so unable to bring back in plus growing in side of main stool so what we had we took back to build up hedge. be good to see what it is like end of this year. and next summer after growing. thats it for the season apart from a show to demonstrate at be autumn time before it starts again. need to find some hedges to lay for new season. if i could get one keep us busy for 3 seasons. over 3 miles long. but its the cost and lack of grants.
  7. you have your cs tickets that's a start. go to the local council find out who does the grass cutting etc. see if you can get a seasonal job with them looking at present for people to cut the grass. will not need a car you can start to earn some money so you can get you licence pay for a little run around then you can start asking local arb boys if they need a hand. or you have the grass cutting work to keep you going until you can get a foot in door. its hard without a licence but there are jobs that you can do until you can get that licence. as for pest control. you will find it harder than arb. to get baits, etc at a right price you will need your certificates. as for shooting once again farmers not keen on strangers you need to get to know people who know farmers. and most do it as a hobby not a paid job. the comercial sector is done by the big company's with all he public liability. sorry to paint a gloomy picture but just being honest. go to council see how you get on. let us all know how you get on. its hard with no money. good luck
  8. had one many moons ago if it has the rotavator part with it then get it cracking rotavator. as for the chipper it does discharge on ground. has a chute for brash and sticks in top but be wary when pushing in top as i found out to my cost pushing in with a large bit of wood my hand went in took top of thumb nearly off. and was not quick if you want it for a profesianal machine then look for a proper chipper. the BCS are for the hobby boys
  9. Ropley behind the village hall. are you interested in hedge laying. if so trying to start up a Hampshire hedgelaying group to promote hedgelaying in Hampshire. need more members. and trying to get a comp off ground for later this year.
  10. more info please where is it being held and what is the national coppicing group did not know one existed know of local group
  11. thanks digga thanks for comments. was a pig hedge. but satisfying. had many a comment on how better the recreation ground now looks because of hedge. talking about having two other hedges laid around rec. one is a new hedge other is a realy old thorn flailed to bits. and big and on a bank o fun with car park below used by the school. that will be short days
  12. at last been able to download pictures of hedge we have been laying finished today. was a right hedge to do barb wire stock fencing grown in chain saw fodder. stools 20 inches plus across with stems up to 5inches around but in my humble veiw looks good now what they do with the brash pulled out must be 12ft high and 20ft long make a good bonfire on november the 5th
  13. have a bit of laburnum i cut down only about 2inch dia. and a bit twisty in places but if any one local is interested will keep and not throw on outdoor fire. its about foot long
  14. +1 axminster very good stuff. and have shops uk nearest to me is high wycombe if it was nearer be in there a lot as have classes on using lathes.
  15. cost £500 to go bankrupt if he is struggling to pay 5k then £500 is a lot to find. it will clear his debts but will not be able to obtain any credit for 5 years. its a big step to go CAB is his route. they should be able to help him out.
  16. if you do go see how much the pedestrian flail mowers go for the yellow ones be interested got some kit for sale the little trailers. at shaftsbury fetch no more than £200 max but i assume the one your looking at is one of the big ones.
  17. for 5k he does not need to go bankrupt get him to go the the citizen advice they will help him out he may be able to get a IVA which is a agreement with his creditors to pay off his debts at a agreed amount it is a legal contract if he does not pay they can then ask for the full debt to be paid off. in court. trust this is of some help
  18. the BCS range of scarifiers can be hired from the major hire companys. eg brandons, hss, speedy hire. they do a very good job so good that the moss and thatch they remove makes the mind boggle how much grass was there as for the grit peat. maybe if you are on stoney ground then may not be the answer but moss loves compacted ground. and is damp if you can get air into the substructure it gets the moss and thatch out and breaks the grass so it grows more. go and have a chat with a local groundsman who look after the bowling green or cricket squares as local may give you a better idear to clear the moss
  19. i get them from car dealers on a daily basis trying to sell me a new car how do they get my number pain in bum if you want something you go to supplier and ask. not had them from arb suppliers though.
  20. wife was with them for her dog grooming now not many mobile dog groomers she had plenty of e mails reporting to be from customers asking for prices. never saw any sale leads from it. i use large corex boards with name on outside were i am working and soon to have truck written. get more from that for a fraction of cost yellow pages. yell .com waste of money
  21. +1 on the 550xp but for hedging look at the oregon battery saw. ideal for hedging. and will do small logging for firewood. when funds alow will get one as it has a self sharpen on it so as you know with hedging chains do hit stuff there not ment to when cutting near ground. nothing worse than a blunt saw in mid flight laying hedges. as i did today hit some buried barb in hazel even though i thought it was all out that was that saw screwed up then did same with husky. then rain came so gave up and went home and had a cup of tea.
  22. if people know you sell it it will go. what i saw which is a good seller the little polysterie packaging that comes with parcels get a glass bottle fill with aspen and drop one in will not disolve. show to customers then do it with normal petrol seconds gone. plus if you have displays up showing you stock it then customers ask for it. thats how i came across it. not looked back saws, brushcutter, blower love it run brill on it.
  23. if any of you are wanting to see the new range of kubota diggers and attachments plus neuson dumpers Harper plant lopcombe corner near salisbury has two open days tomorrow and saturday the new range of diggers plus the goodies that go on them plus will have second hand plant for sale.
  24. a old gardener who i did work for had a bad lawn with moss in september he scarified the lawn taken out all the moss he then mixed 4 shovels of peat with one shovel of grit he then spread this on lawn and raked in slits left it for winter. spring he scarified again mowed all summer did the repeat process. the next year lawn was like a bowling green. and just looked after it know a groundsman does the same on cricket pitch scarifies then top dresses then goes over in spring and collects with mower the bits pulled out its drainage that needs sorting. not the ph level the scarifying and grit opens up the lawn so it can breath and moss hates dry conditions. will soon go once drainage is sorted a good scarifier to hire is a BCS cracking tools used to have 3 i hired out did the job not cheap to buy but if you have a lot to do a good investment wil last years
  25. and i thought the dog version was bad. makes you think when strimming long grass may find a young lady squatting:biggrin:
