  1. i am after a couple of bits to make a mallet if near.
  2. tree stake rubbers like overgrown cable ties. screw to box then around tree as tree grows they expand and no damage to tree. untill tree gets so big that ties will not move will not need checking for a few years
  3. all very good photos. the one with the car with the branches a soft golden glow againts the deep red looks stunning what camera do you use has to be a slr with a special lens canon by any chance
  4. i am on 4g with EE and on a sony experia never find i can not get signal well its rare to the old days orange has been one of the better carriers. i go to some remote places and as yet hardly had problems with signal. the handset is very good still trying to work it to its full so its not the handset. did have some problems with orange switched to EE find them better not perfect but better. O2.vodaphone found them to be total pain to deal with. and signal with them two hence switched to orange then EE
  5. i find using a normal brick hammer does your arm in as handle is to short. hence need a nice bit of wood with a lonigsh handle on. got no decent thorn in hedge to young. have a holly tree but do not want to hack it. will see if i can find some apple. bingo i know were i have got some will go and get a bit apple tree needs a good prune.
  6. wonder if its a neeman axe not seen one so do not know how they mark there tools. but if it is then have one of the very best axes out. will pay in the region of £400 for one. all hand made with a waiting list to have one made. hope it is as you will have the rolls of a axe
  7. good morning all just to let you know mary went and had her opp to remove her meanginoma tumor, on friday. is making small progress now off the drip and starting to eat had roast chicken dinner yesterday. and has had a scan to check on things. can see her being in majority of this week which is not a bad thing get her strenght back. thank you all for all your messages last time meant a lot and mary read them all and was touched by your kindness. as and when will keep you all in touch on how things are going. just heard now off the O2 and walking with the physio,s so getting better
  8. does anyone have any bits of some very hard wood to make a couple of mallets with. want them for knocking stakes in for hedgelaying. tried yew did not last long. heard beech is ok what about holm oak or similar. willing to collect in the hampshire area thank you
  9. can any one sugest a good book more of the pocket size if poss to ID trees know majority of hard wood but softwood still do not know much about the diferent types. looking for one that shows the bark as to me they do look similar when there not.
  10. i have the 576xp and its a good saw but have now used a 372 more than once and its a far better saw much lighter as much if not more grunt cracking saw. thinking of flogging the 576 and getting a 372.
  11. have to say do not like using any of the stuff even though i do use it but main one is glyphosphate. i get booted and suited when using it. be interested in reading reports from other bodies. but it must have a effect on our wildlife. hence the crash in the bee population. as the saying go.s a weed is a flower or plant in the wrong place. maybe we should live with weeds and remove them with less drastic mesures than using all these chemicals. i now use a cda sprayer as itsprays less so less is used. and no mixing and left overs in tank what you use is used rest goes back in tank for the next time
  12. its based on your tax code but its 5k mine never came to5k with alowances and other things i only paid about £900. but its something you have to think of that it reduces your tax alowance per year so you pay HMRC more as for milage it still the same 45p and 25p when i was doing 50k a year at 25p a mile does not go far covering the cost of fuel now hence never go down that route cheaper to use company vehical andpay the tax
  13. think we must have a vixen around at mo got all my ducks also went for geese but she must of parted them as one i found in field lost. got to be hungry or with cubs to take them on. but keeper has lost a lot of chickens. not a good place to go the keepers lair
  14. thanks dorset for posting link be good to have some more cutters on board same with this site well nearly finished laying just got to stake and bind trouble is coppicer gone on holiday so looks like i need to get into woods and get some need 400 binders and stakes good 2 days work just getting them. been a long season this one. now for the shows will pm you with some dates.
  15. profile cut steel is to say usless have two only thing they are good for are for kindling a prper bill or axe was made using carbon steel with a sandwich of wrought steel fused together then made into the shape and sharpened hence they are sharp and keep there ede mordern ones use special carbon type steels once again forged into shape then polised to a sharp edge. hence the price of them as they are good. same with old tools i will only use old tools or tools made by the likes of gransfors or by a blacksmith. if i was to use a profile cut one i still be hacking at my hedges look like a bever had been having a go. my gransfor i can on a 3inch stem pleach in 3 swings do not think a profile one would do that.
  16. had some good advice on the other post i believe the moderators had thought it had run its course so best to lock it. hope you can get going and when you do then let s know how you are doing.
  17. very nice you carvers are some clever lot.
  18. get hold of a trap and trap it wildlife rescue groups will do it. needs sorting brazen to extreme may have something wrong with it if its doing them sort of things.
  19. showing my age when i was knee high my uncle used to take me in a cart made by my grand dad had pram wheels and a mower handle of a old cylinder mower and a wooden box used to take it to the timber yard and collect all the offcuts for the fire. not hard to make a basic trailer from a old pram and a arm coming off attached to back of bike could even adverise on side of it. once seen going around you will be getting calls asking if you can do some work. but as other posts do a good job it brings in more work do a bad one and it will go around. good luck
  20. if you use your vehical for work other than going to yard you can claim was 45p per mile. as for clothing you can offset some of your tax for clothing you have had to get to do work at year end you would need to do a HMRC form for milage so you need to record your milage you do it was daily so can be a choreif not doing many miles. and a return for clothing but you will need t check with HMRC. as for fuel you can claim this back from your boss and he can ofset this in his books that he pays milage. DRAWBACK if you use a company car you will pay £5k a year in tax if you use it for private use if it belongs to company. i used my own and charged the company. but if you do over 10k a year it drops to a lower band and it is not worth using own. i was at end due to the goverment having such a paltry milage rate. that i was only just breaking even with cost of fuel servicing tyres it soon added up. never go down that road again big mistake
  21. i know were you are coming from a friend is near to you and he has found it hard to find work due to location. but as other posts if you are in debt you will not get any credit. yor best bet is get that driving licence then your world is your oyster. you can then get a job pay off your debts save up getting tools then branch out on your own. if you want to earn some extra do grass cutting local. being serous have a trailer to go on back of a bike so you can put a small mower in plus a few tools. soon be seen and you will gt people askingand word will get round. seen a window cleaner round these parts doing same
  22. advanced notice 19th october Hampshire hedgelaying championships and ploughing match at meadstead nr Alton. Midland SOE Styles. Open novice and team Class ideal practice for those entered for the nationals the week after. will post full details as soon as finalised with the agriculture society. may be space for camping or caravans wanting to come down on the saturday night.
  23. quote for two people so what ever your hourly rate is x2. if its a price for whole job if you can work out how long you think it will take and by using your hourly rate x2 thats the price. as for clearing it all. ask a local tree surgeon to give you a price to chip it up for you if you drag it to him to chip a lot of work having to take it to tip and may refuse you if they think its trade. plus if there is some felling he or her may do that bit so covered by insurance.
  24. i have been given the rights to coppice a hazel wood. now started doing a bit of work but have found that a lot of the hazel is very dry to the stage that on smaller stuff it just breaks, its not dead as it has katkins on it next to wood is a fir plantation what fir do not know. would this take all the moisture out that the hazel is struggling to get enought to grow properly. shame as its ideal but being so dry its a struggle to find the materials i want that are ok. if it is coppiced and allowed to regrow would the new stuff be better or is it a lost case and find elswere to coppice
  25. i want to make some signs to put on hedges i laid i know dorset did some for his hedges. what is the better one to get and can you get stencils for letter work. want to have a go. and maybe try doing different things. looked on google and there are all different ones from a solder iron up to £200 machines.
