  1. do not know if its legal but mad not to have it in case of a claim could ruin you if you had no insurance. out of interest i have 10 mil as per HCC guidlines i found it as cheap for this amount than for the lower 5 or 2 mil. i use a firm called concored insurance eastleigh speak to neil does all my insurance and its not a major firm with a call centre so speak to the man. done me a good deal.
  2. just re read your post so far 500mtrs on one job 50 to finish and a 100 on other 30 to finish. thats season end for me till next season start on 700mtrs hedge. plus other small jobs
  3. the size you are cutting not do much in a day 10mtrs if you are lucky. i use a saw on bigger stuff but cut thick then finish off with axe. as saw cuts againts grain axe goes wit so less chance of splitting and breaking off. i have a elwell 4lb for big stuff and a gransfor for the other stuff old boy cutter said to me width of trunk x3 start pleach works ok. was on gas me and son in law laid 70 mtrs this weekend of hawthorn smallish stuff but tangled to hell. so was doing more midland than SOE. and it was cold today wind was going through not round and hail storms. still trying to warm up
  4. some big old bits of wood looks a nice job devon style. only thing is that it looks bare with all its whiskers taken off. i sometimes think south of england is a lot of work as we leave nost f the whiskers on then have to weave it into other pleached stems so takes time. when i finish hedges will post them. 50 mtrs on one hedge and 60 mtrs on other hedge. then thats it for season.
  5. friend has the 40cc and the big saw and can not fault them he works them every day in wood cutting a lot of coppice material. he says for £170 2 year warrenty how can he go wrong he knows for 2 years it will be fixed. they do say the mitox is one of the best of the chinese brand. maybe we have come used to buying the the two main brands and unwilling to try a new member. as its a good money and rather pay the extra knowing it is good. but then hear story of the main two playing up.
  6. +1 does the trick for me if they fail to start
  7. no sparsholt or alresford this year. must get to bently this year
  8. we were lucky down this neck of the woods stayed dry all day cloudy with a bit of mizzel in afternoon. did not rain untill it was dark. now sunshine out again.
  9. i got hold of natural england. and the cutting of hedges by mechanical means ends 1st march as other posts. as for laying. we all like to finish early as dorset says the summer jobs are on. but this year has not been normal. and guidlines i receives was can lay hedges untill end of march if already laying then then on checking hedge and no nesting birds then can carry on untill end of april. draw back is if its a vey dense hedge and job to look in i think i would hold off and go back in september. but hedges i am on are open young stock and can see aything trying or nesting. all i have seen walking hedge is old last year nest no new ones. but there has to be proper guidlines to work to maybe something NHLS could do for its members so no dispute if challenged.
  10. wish some of the councils i work for would go BACS but there acountants still in dark ages and has to be paid by cheque signed by two people so need a council meeting to get it done. now get them in early so waiting to be paid when council meet.
  11. thats the draw back with them there bulky. like to have a strap across middle to hold the shoulder straps on. and are heavy. but compared to the baby sthil. of all the jobs i have done with sthil. if i had the echo i could of finished jobs quicker maybe less work shoveling leaves. now i do have it will be worked hard. but the sthil will still be of use were the back pack will get in way. and as other posts takes up back cab of pick up. yet to lift tarmac but was lifting the mud and dirt off pavements.
  12. +1 anything strong to kill brambles and nettles will kill the rest. as other post get a weed wipe and wipe on brambles and nettles. the other thing is clear the brambles and inject into stems so kills roots. but avoid it spraying out on to surrounding areas
  13. check indespension website for second hand ones. i got a plant trailer from them all serviced. cost me £800 new getting on for £1500. never is mentioned is warrick trailers do some very good ones well built. not flimsey tin stuff IF seems to get a lot of press and good kit but there are other makes out there as good if not better other firm who may have a good one is trailer tec at micheldever hampshire. do the home market ones but also do comercial kit. if you get from a dealer then do have a come back. not that trailers go wrong much.
  14. well my old and trusted sthil br86 recoil broke and fan fins worn out due to abuse by me trying to suck up leaves with grit in. now being fixed but had to go when in middle of clearing a footpath. so had no choice and went and got a back pack blower. used a sthil was ok and tried a husky very good. but price was a factor. then was offered by forest and arb a PB770 echo £400 inc vat what a machine. why did i not get one a long time ago the power of it is amazing blew the mud out of the weeds and ivy on footpath so all i had to do was cut the ivy off leaves just blew them into hedgeoff the footpath. i also do a footpath every 12 weeks which is a mess horses use it so you know what mud all over it. with little one 2 tanks and a hours work to clear. with beastie today 1/4 tank 10 mins to do job. went down one ffotpath and up other and still had half a tank. if looking for a new blower then get a echo worth it and 2 years warrenty on it unlike the sthil 1 year.
  15. have checked is ok to lay as long as there are no nesting birds. re sap rising. if the back of pleach does not crease when laying should be ok. if it creases then yes stop and leave untill september. but with the winter wehave had i knowa number of cutters are way behind finishing off. so just carrying on to get done.
  16. the information was given to me by the NHLS re if cutting and leave then birds start nesting then it would have to be left. but under DEFRA guidlines hedgelaying is allowed untill end of april unless birds are nesting. if a check is done you can carry on laying. if you then find that part of the hedge you are about to lay has nesting birds then have to pull out and leave untill september. wiil find the proper information and post on hear as this may be a sticky subject.
  17. go and check it see if there are any nests if not. lay just a mtr. and you can then lay rest as long as done by end of april. just got to do a homemade form date ,time you checked and have a countersign to say it was checked. when you do the rest. just check again. you are then ok if get asked and covered for defra
  18. forgot the grass cutting so i need a light on my ride on. :biggrin:and i was going to bournmouth or weymouth for the summer as a lifeguard. but when i applied said the speedos did not look good on me. so its grass cutting.
  19. no they will not let you tip they do not tip there has to go elswere as a joint base for all HCC. green otter as other posts yes waste carriers licence and last time i tipped was told £10 per tonne. if still taking getting hard to tip at mo not many sites taking it or charge a premium to tip it. was looking at taken it but for what is involed to store it sort it for £3 per tonne not worth the effort.
  20. was speaking to a very experianced cutter today and found some information out i did not know. you can lay hedges untill the end of april. as long as you start cutting before the end of march. and leave it you can still carry on cutting. the only thing you have to do is fill out a form you make up saying what day you started cutting what time and if no birds nesting in hedge. and get cliant to sign it with you this covers you if you are asked and defra become involed. also some species of hedge maple lay better later in season when sap rising as are not so brittle. so out goes stopping start of march can carry on untill end of april. thats 8 months to lay hedges leaves 4 months to lay back in the sun. ready for the new season.
  21. and this one has to worth having bigger cut but still goes through gates. 26" (66 cm) Heavy-Duty Hi-Vac Bagger (22203TE)

  23. lookinf for chain saw carvers who be interested in doing a demo at a hedgelaying comp end of year nr alton. also if any one can help looking for some small trophies to be made to hand out to winners. this is going to be in aid of nuro support this year. if interested or can help please PM me
  24. they have got high viz,s on so are legit even at 2am in morning. but no one is going to blink a eye unless in the game and know its dodgy. had two chaps come down the field walk into wood had a gander then walked out and back up field thought it was landowner. only to find out it was not. never saw were they went. now on red alert. in case they come back.
