  1. there is an out of control hedge out the front too. all of it is in our border and it would be nice to remove the evergreens and make it a hardwood hedge. i'm not sure which evergreen species these trees are. the rest is box elder, holly and hazel i think. the ivy round the porch post needs removing too. .
  2. one of the purple beech stems is quite thick and may need to be removed if it is to be turned back into a hedge? the rest are only 4-5" stems from what i could see. there is also some box elder and other shrubs under the copper beech. can this mess become a hedge again? .
  3. first of all the evergreen needs removing and then the purple beeches need heavily cutting back (if they'll survive it?). my mum and auntie are only just over 5' so you can judge that the trees are between 15'-20' tall at their peak. .
  4. pics and work to do are coming
  5. hi guys, my mum has decided to move house and she's found one in maidenhead but it needs a bit of work on the greenery. could some of you give me a rough ballpark figure as to how much it would cost?
  6. just curious to know if the tree i saw that bore green to purple mini apples is actually an apple or some sort of bullace or medlar??? i got driven past it yesterday and although i know the park well i'd not been there when the tree has had fruit on it. it's in a local park that has some unusual specimens in it like a dawn redwood and bastard service tree. this link should show the tree i'm on about. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5240913,-0.7036623,3a,41.3y,57.98h,91.95t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1soYVWOYdSrQmEGkKqBAmNEw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 the one with the purple red fruit behind the ray mead road sign.
  7. the banjo should be able to slide in enough to enable you to do most things mick. if you slide it in as far as it will go how far is edge of the tool rest from the center?
  8. if that's a load of wellingtonia then give delabodge a call. he loves that stuff.
  9. most tool rests are angled to some degree. it might help to see the one you are currently using.
  10. walnut is not indigenous to the uk, it's native to the mountains of central asia.
  11. there must be some product that you can put into your oil??? if not then i would just let them age together as they will blend into each other in my opinion.
  12. i thought zelkova when i saw them. i've just identified one down my road and do think it is in that genus but not sure which one...
  13. yep, we had exactly that bird (not sure of the species) in our stove which eventually worked its way down to the fire and thankfully flew straight out of the open doors. good thing it was summer at the time.
  14. don't worry pat, i'll get rid of all that for you mate. there's no need for you to toil over it anymore. how much sycamore have you got cut?
  15. i'd have picked elmo myself.
  16. funny thing is, the PM should be my mp as i live in maidenhead but there is a funny set of boarders right where i am so i actually get a guy called dominic grieve. no one canvases round here as we've been conservative since year dot.
  17. greenhorn, please get in touch with me immediately. jon is on his way up on tuesday and i need to get some details if you have kept some of the timber.
  18. just seen this on ebay. looks very useful in the right environment. Double slabber | eBay
  19. here they are. the longer one is 59" and has a 13" interior and the shorter one is 32 3/4" and has a 14 3/4" inside diameter. the pipe wall is 1/2" thick. the shorter one fits over the longer one.
  20. here they are. i'll measure them exactly later but the shorter one fits over the longer one .
  21. thats sort of the point of steaming, it re-saturates the timber to a point that it will bend. could take hours though for the bone oak. SteveA, if you are interested i have a 14" bore poly pipe that i bought for steam bending during my projects at college. i never got round to using it thought and may be ideal for what you are doing. i'll see if i can dig a picture out of it.
  22. i've always wanted to know what sort of circular saw mill that is at the end. anyone know what make it is?
  23. could you send me a block from the end you think is sound? i'll be able to tell pretty quickly if it's good enough for my skittles.
  24. if there is any that is un spalted and it perfectly sound timber i might be interested for some as 6"+ beams for skittles. if it sounds like any of the lignin has broken down then i can't use it but if it's good wood then i'm interested.
  25. should be nice and stable after drying in the tree? i bet they'll make a few nice tables...
