  1. i like the sound of being spooky... the longest is about 7' but most are well under that. john, email me and let's sort this out. you are a diamond mate...
  2. hi guys, i have an ebay lot that i'd like to buy but it is in morpeth and i am just west of london. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Lignum-Vitae-Massive-quantity-/192290275629?hash=item2cc564c12d:g:wJkAAOSwcexZouss there are about 13 boards weighing about 500 kilos all in. if anyone can help then please let me know. i'll happily give you extra fuel money. please pm me if you can help.
  3. you need to show the colour of the heartwood and the ratio of heartwood to sapwood. it varies quite a bit in walnut from trees that have gorgeous deep brown and streaky timber that will be used in furniture and turning to trees that are all sapwood and are used for firewood.
  4. was that all for the customer? how much of the sycamore have you got cut?
  5. yes.
  6. it depends on the turner mick... i know of turners that make the small branches into mushrooms and other things that can quite happily use those little bits 2-3" wide but personally i won't keep anything under 4". if anyone is interested i have plenty of laburnum to for turning.
  7. that would be great but it sounds like it may have gone to the axe ...
  8. to the right person it is. i know you have elm to waste in your neck of the woods but it's bloody rare down here. give it a week on ebay first before you log it up... if it were anywhere near me i'd cut it into half logs and sell it as blanks.
  9. yep, Metasequoia glyptostroboides it is. i believe they are more commonly planted in parks and other public areas. i only know of two in my local area.
  10. how big is the sycamore? can they be milled?
  11. i was thinking the same thing. do you buy ascent trousers too?
  12. i never received an email but i was checking periodically to see if the site was back, that's how i found out it was.
  13. alec cut the sycamore i have just used in late april and it's been perfect. you can see it at the bottom of page 4 on this link. i presume it's the time of felling rather than the time of year for a good bit of sycamore. what alec cut was a good straight log at about 24' before the first branch so it behaved well but for me it's all down to the drying of the wood as i dry it really slowly and keep it out of the wind. do you know of any?
  14. i grew up watching the generation game in the 90's and can't believe he's gone... i always thought his shows were totally different because he made you part of the show whether you were in the studio or at home.
  15. don't worry guys, i'm not going to do anything stupid. i had already decided to buy a new part as i really don't think i'd know how to swap switches anyway. you didn't waste my time eggs as at least i found out to never ask a shop like that anything again...
  16. the chin that launched a thousand laughs has gone. R.I.P Sir Bruce.
  17. took it down to that place you suggested and they could not test it for me. neither could the leccy shop next to it. i'm going to try transplanting the switch for the bandsaw to my pillar drill as i believe they are the same and if it works on that i then know it's probably the capacitor and will buy a new one from ebay.
  18. even if they shrink past the 5" i can use them for 4 1/2" pins. how much do you have?
  19. cut and put in stick quickly it can stay as good as this...
  20. i need one that's only been cut recently rather than left to go funky. if you hear of any trees that are to come down let me know.
  21. hi guys, can anyone offer me some large diameter sycamore (2'-3' or over) to be milled into squares for my skittles. if anyone can help then please get in touch via the website. http://steveswoodenskittles.co.uk/products.html i need it milled before the year is out and the timber can have no spalting or rot and must not be from open standing trees as they do not dry well. for the skittles i will need 5 and 6" stock which needs to be milled at 1/2" bigger to allow for shrinkage. thanks Steve
  22. i haven't had the time to sort it yet mate, i'm just too busy at the moment but i 'm glad that i don't really need the bandsaw on a regular basis and i will look to sort it before the end of the month.
  23. i'll definitely take those straight clean boards of cherry if they are the 2" ones you mentioned? i'm interested in a few others too so i'll be up for a pallets worth.
  24. here is the back of my saw. if that round thing is the capacitor it only has one wire going into it rather than two. there is merely a bolt holding it in place at the other end. does that mean that the capacitor is in the black box??? .
  25. indeed, excellent fuel... great for turning too. the listing doesn't say it's laburnum, did you ring him?
