  1. don't be so modest mate, you are a wealth of knowledge on the whole and are always glad to help if you can. the world needs more fellas like you.
  2. get big j on the phone mate, he's the man when it comes to this subject.
  3. have heard of it happening but had no problem as yet. i believe the magnetising comes from repeatedly passing or scraping of the tool and the magnet so i try to "pick" the tool off rather than slide them.
  4. for flat tools like skews and scrapers i use a couple of chef's 24" magnetic knife racks . for all others i use a board with about 20 holes in it screwed to the wall so i can see what tool is on the other end. i've got to know my handles as they are all slightly different. you could number your handles? i'll take a pic asap.
  5. dan, that £1800 is a real bargain mate, it costs £2579 now. i bought mine new when they were a bit cheaper plus loads of extras for a deal price which included 3 chucks bowl jaws and a few other bits, still cost me £2400 though. pity you've not got room as it's a beauty.
  6. this one just popped up on ebay. Jet 3520B Heavy Duty Wood Lathe | eBay i've one myself and it's great.
  7. dalbergia sissoo is the wood in question here and will fade badly if put in the sun. i don't know what restoration techniques would bring it back but presuming it is solid timber sanding it would do the job fine. if you decide to put it back out in the sun the finish it with the strongest UV inhibitor you can find.
  8. these should all be vee belts so no teeth to wear away.
  9. probably, i just looked up an add on gumtree that was selling one and it came with both sizes so said 4' max. belts should be rubber. i've never had to replace one yet but i don't think any of mine have been plastic.
  10. that lathe should only be 4' max i think. why are you going through belts???
  11. dan, don't waste £300 on a brand new lathe when you can learn all you need to on a cheap one. Woodturning lathe | eBay RECORD CORONET NO 3 WOOD TURNING LATHE - WITH STAND. 5 day listing. | eBay Record DML 24x woodturning lathe | eBay Record Power DML36SH woodturning lathe plus tools | eBay here are a few suggestions you could buy. once you have realised your skill level and what you enjoy doing most then buy a lathe that is 300-500 that caters for those requirements...
  12. becoming a lost skill, we need more people like her..
  13. never sen it so don't know. put a picture up would you please. i may be interested in some if there is any going spare?
  14. are these of any use? they are on the fire pile. roughly 6 x 10" x 1/4". might get more from my offcuts as i'll be milling some oak in the near future.
  15. big beech, hang your head in shame... one that size should be milled for the 20' free of branches. burn the rest.
  16. size?
  17. need to be 2 1/2" as the finished size is a smidgen over 2"
  18. i've had 8' boards that i won on ebay sent through these guys using interparcel economy... Cheap Parcel Delivery From Interparcel
  19. startrite.
  20. can't believe no one has mentioned it yet. The Simpsons...
  21. having walked past one not 20mins ago i realise that it could very well be that.
  22. hawthorn sprung to mind as son as i saw the photo too.
  23. i have to agree with that, they are also much cheaper. any saw or big machinery like this you just need common sense rather than loads of guards.
  24. your right beau i'd happily have either but band resaws seem more expensive. it would be for cutting quarters of trees in to planks. i would also use it for resawing old dry stock which you really need a tct blade to do the work, a sleeper is being cut up in the vid and i buy old baulks of wood that are up to 12" and wish to turn them in to planks. jon the saw, that saw you have only cuts 9" max and i want something that has a bigger capacity. those 32" saws should do up to 13" which on quarters of oak would give lovely q sawn boards.
  25. i'm going to guess that it's either a yew or holm oak.
