  1. So what about right? Just got a new batch in and the bags are smaller than the last in spite of the cost being the same. I don't make much on kindling but it's nice to have some to offer the customers. So what is a fair retail price to charge per KG. Trying to work it out by all the various bag sizes is a pain.
  2. I know diddly squat about roof mounts on tractors but cant you add a frame that you fix to the 3 point linkage and push it down when using the crane? Presumably, the winch blade would do the same job when you don't have a trailer on the back.
  3. Bad J. You have broken Bolam's laws "Christmas haters - I don’t want to hear it, find another thread." haha I do like Christmas songs but they just get played too much to the point it's easy to become a hater. One I like that doesn't get so much air time
  4. It does sound a bit high. This guys site should be trustworthy as he used to work for the met office but it's a bit far east for you. http://www.lyneside.demon.co.uk/Haytor/automatic/Current_Vantage_Pro.htm
  5. Been a bit quiet on here lately. Proper wild winters day today with rain and gale. A foot of rain last month and another 8" so far this month. Reservoirs all topped up and could now do with a break now.
  6. You would be hellish lucky or live somewhere very flat. Most guys I know driving Devon lanes for work average between 25-28mpg. Best my Dmax did was just under 30 on a run to the APF and back but that was Friday night job haha. My new-old 08 Hilux is averaging 25. Mark why new? If you are looking for good value surly a good second hand truck is far better. They loose 25% the moment you take it out the showroom. I get that you dont want bells and whistles and that can be hard to avoid but they help when it comes to second hand value.
  7. Something I was very interested in when I bought a Dmax but what I quickly realised is book figures and real world figures are very different matter. Sitting on the sidelines and reading posts on trucks over the years Nivaras seem consistently good on MPG.
  8. Always liked this one by Greg Lake. Guess it helps having a brother who loved prog rock
  9. I know when we built our place I used some larch that was supposed to be graded but came with no marking for C16. I had to pester to get some certification that frankly looked pretty dubious when it arrived. When building control came for sign off the BC said he was qualified to grade timber. Now I dont know how many are qualified in grading but some clearly are.
  10. From the build quality point of view I would take the Stihl every day of the week. Only seen the Stihl in action and it was very impressive but not seen the others in action so watching this thread with interest.
  11. I would look for a top loader. Trying to shovel in branch loggings in from the front is not easy but if you could pour from a hopper from above it would make the whole loading process much better. Down side is I guess you will get a pile of ash dust rise up when lifting the top. Vermont casting do some top loading models.
  12. Having a clear out and came across the above and they might be of use to someone on here. Seems a shame to ditch them
  13. Old thread I know but an Isuzu is the reason I bought a Hilux
  14. I would agree with the above. Did 1m billets one year and what happens is they dont slit down the middle but track out to one side quite a bit. One end is too thick and the other too thin. I guess it depends how neat logs you want but I went back to rings and vertical splitting for a quality product.
  15. Maybe they miss-read the title "What glue to use for repairing boats?" ?
  16. Had it just the once Christmas 2010. Didn't miss much work but ruined any holiday. Hopefully never again. Get well soon Stuart.
  17. As Stubby says sorry to hear this. Firewood can be hard on the body. I had a scare a few years back with my back as like many I have a slipped disc which used to play havoc from time to time but then brought me to a grinding halt. I have now mechanised out most of worst heavy jobs but very hard to completely avoid heavy lifting. No idea of your set up but these are some of the thing I have done to help but sadly they haven't come cheap. A log splitter with a winch to lift large rings onto the table. If thats not an option there is no shame in dissecting rings down into easily manageable pieces. A processor. My god they take so much work out of the process. Just the conveyor is almost worth 1 man. Combined with a log deck or a log lifter that is an option on some processors. My latest is a rotator to go on the loader. Logs are dried and stored in IBC crates and I was spending literally several working weeks a year just hand-balling logs out of these and into the truck. With the rotator just lift crate over truck and at the press of a button the whole lot is in the truck. It's magic. When my back was bad ringing up on the floor was very painful so I would set the rounds up on other rings to avoid some of the bending. The best thing for me was one phrase from a chap who trained in massage. He said to engage my core. This has taken some time to learn but now when lifting I am trying to lift using my core muscles and not my back muscles. This has been a revelation and now the painkillers live in the draw most of the time. No two backs are the same so this may not be applicable to you but it has been more effective for me than all the treatments I have had over the last 30 years. As Mick says hunt around for treatment that works for you.
  18. Hope this is not out of place but Vesp and Eggs just sod off and go and PM your dick swinging contest! You are ballsing up a great thread.
  19. Another one who wonders what the hell he has been doing while some of you have managed to do everything under the sun. Left school at 13 to be home schooled. Ended up with one O level so not such a great plan. Trained to be a cabinet maker for a year and did that professionally for 20 odd years while also working on the family farm. Converted a barn on the farm and started logs as a sideline and liked it so much made it my main job. Help out as groundy from time to time and do a bit of kitchen fitting for a mate.
  20. No idea how to fix them no but can thoroughly recommend the Class Ohlson ones at about half the price. Not killed them yet in spite of my best efforts.
  21. Woodworks

    Rats

Just do the test and use rat bait. Mrs Woodwork did it online and found it all very straight forward. Yes it costs a few quid but sounds like you need a long term solution. Some cats take rats and others dont. Had plenty of cats on the farm over the years but only one of them was a good ratter.
  22. Probably a good call. Come on then South West Arbtalkers who facies a meet up ?
  23. This mornings rush hour in rural Devon
  24. Yep 13" of rain in the last month according to our weather station. Mind you only half that amount near Tiverton
  25. We have it on to keep things dry. Currently 96% RH and averaged 90% over the last month. Soggy as an otters pocket for the last few weeks.
