  1. Might add a tiny bit of encouragement https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-46440389?fbclid=IwAR3YvXhhigmJ5-2GPrsi2OGj3sneVJCv_jJoD5xcc_IjggZdH_Z21vkbtLQ
  2. They used to stick union jacks to their machines but think they have stopped that. Purely second hand but I understood they just bolt them together in the UK but of Chinese origin.
  3. Yep that pretty much sums it up ? Only difference is being on the moors the sheep are supposed to be on the lanes but that doesn't stop visitors alerting you to them. They dont really get it when you point out the cattle grids they have driven over getting here. I love our county
  4. Great stuff chaps A couple of repeated themes are working with others and money. Not much interest in money beyond paying the bills and we live cheap anyway but working with others more is something I think I should work at. I have been self employed my whole working life and live relatively remotely so spend far too much time on my own. It's why I gave up the furniture making as being stuck in a workshop all day on your own is not good for the sole. Logs at least gets me out and about more but still not got the pleasure of being part of a team. I do help out as a groundy from time to time so maybe should look to do a bit more of that. Only other thought is to up the business and employ someone but looking at all the grief many of you have employing it does not look very tempting.
  5. Good work J. So have bought a mill for down here?
  6. Where will you put you buckets Matt? Thought you had to put them in the tub to keep the trailer weight down. Mind they sound a dream for towing a load around here
  7. Yep a good tidy up has begun. My desk tends to have a deep litter filing system which is not good for the head.
  8. Yes my work life can be quite diverse and switching from one thing to another is not always the easiest but then I get bored easily so probably better off that way. Well maybe not but then others in the same boat may have found ways to help so share your thoughts. Yes weather does play a part I am sure. It's been a pretty bad month anyway not helped by a foot of rain and lack of sun. Find myself most energised when it's cold and sunny and least so in the heat of the summer. That did my head in.
  9. Started off crazy busy and to point we stopped selling hardwood to new customers to keep enough stores for the regulars. Much quieter now thankfully with just a steady trickle of orders coming in. Saying we are out of hardwood but you can have softwood has not put off half as many as it might of a few years back. Either minds are changing or they are desperate haha.
  10. I have never been a go getter and never have any ambition in life. Just patter along taking each day as it comes. Starting to find it harder and harder to get on with my work and rarely go out in an evening either. I was wondering what drives others to be so productive and energetic. I guess there the obvious things like kids, dept and ambition but are there other motivating factors I could tap into? I am not lazy when I work probably quite the opposite but it's getting going that's the hard bit. Be grateful for any words of wisdom
  11. Perfect
  12. What got my goat was them saying "that was very expensive" and sitting in their garage was spangly BMW. So tempted to say "no thats expensive" but managed to bite my tongue.
  13. Had a drop this morning of a couple of cube of softwood. They had moaned a bit about the price over the phone but still ordered the load. Got there and more moaning ensued so I said flippantly "do you want me to take it away?" They called my bluff and I returned to base to unload 2 cube back into crates. Probably better than having a customer bad mouthing me but still a bit peeved.
  14. Very informative post wyk. Thanks
  15. Should make for some interesting reading https://www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Biomass-in-a-low-carbon-economy-CCC-2018.pdf
  16. I dont think you get something for nothing but you do so fair enough. Questioning porting on here is apparently blasphemy so I will leave it.
  17. So it's emissions which are sacrificed for the tuning. What do think are the intentions of the manufactures? I have never met Spud and no idea about his working environment. Calling him a chap in shed was just to emphasise the difference in facilities and resources. Not meant in any way to be knocking his skills as he is clearly very good at what he does.
  18. So Stubby I am not buying it. Manufacturers put massive efforts and resources into the development of saws. You say a chap in a shed with a file (sorry spud not knocking your skills as clearly are very good at what you do) can achieve something no one else can? Na it's a compromise. You have a square of fuel, emission, power and longevity and if you up one another has to give. Manufacturers are forced to improve emissions to meet regulations which lets face it are there to protect us.
  19. Just quoting what I have been told when asked about ported saw previously. Never used one myself. I want clean emissions without going to the expense of Aspen
  20. Bare in mind everything comes at a cost. I think you will have far dirtier emissions and poorer economy
  21. No idea but if it was cheaper surly we wouldn't have any imports?
  22. Waiting for better weather to take pictures in is never going to happen so I hope you can make these out through the gloom. Various species including beech, oak and even sycamore. Some have put on some girth since being layed but none were nice little 2" stems when first done ?
  23. I am fortunate there are quite a few wealthy retired sort close by who can afford it. Just speculating that if brexit is bad (it probably will be) and we all feel it in our pockets luxuries like logs will be one of the first things to go. I know darn well if I had to pay for logs our stove would become obsolete!
  24. Bad luck but is there no way to keep the old truck going? Maybe just go newer but still lowish tech. Think DPFs came in in 2011 and as you know they caused me a world of hassle. I cant really fault my Hilux and as J points out our lanes are narrow and the Hilux of my vintage (MK6) is still one of the narrowest trucks around. Down side is legal towing capacity at just 2.7 tonne.
  25. I presume the driving force for imported kin dried wood is price so I guess managing native woods is more expensive. Most things are driven by market economics why would wood fuel be different?
