  1. Sound like an ideal shed. Ours logs get wet when the wind blows but not had any problems with our birch rotting. This on Dartmoor so you should easily get away with it in arid Norfolk Just keep an eye on it and get it to the sheds if it shows signs of turning.
  2. If you don't keep it steady which I probably haven't how is the charcoal different. I clearly have charcoal and it works fine but maybe it could be better. What sort of temp would you aim at for BBQ charcoal. Is the 400C mentioned by openspaceman good enough for this use? Thanks
  3. It didn't used to cost as much as does these days. Was fortunate that my folks payed for me to spend a year with David instead of being packed off to Uni. This was when he was in Bideford near the coal yard. He did enjoy teaching but rarely had the time as running the workshops and keeping it in work was nearly a full time job so Malcolm did a lot of the teaching .Think he went bust a few times along the way so having students wasn't profitable enough. So were you at Appledore? You got me racking my brains for the peace of slime
  4. Exactly. If stored in soggy unvented shed it may well turn to dust but cut split birch stored well will be loverly. Been selling some I processed 16 months ago and they are perfect and I would expect them to stay that way for another year if I don't sell them first.
  5. Think you would be looking at £2000 minimum. Made a large wardrobe 25 years back and that was over a £1000 and I don't remember it being enough to cover the hours I put into it.
  6. You trained with David?
  7. How critical is the temperature of the burn to the quality of the charcoal? I see the Exeter retort and that Bavarian one in the video all have a thermometer. On our retort I just watch to see if the wood is giving off it's its gas. If these flames die back a bit I feed the fire and if it keeps going I leave it. No brown ends and no ash but maybe there is more to it than that.
  8. Looks great James. SCM is good solid pro gear and a power feed is such a boon for a quality cut and handling larger sections. Only thing missing is a sliding carriage which would be handy if you want to do tenons.
  9. This one? [ame] [/ame]
  10. Looking at the mess in Nepal me and the Mrs would like to make a small donation. Used to give to Shelterbox but they had some scandal a while ago but don't know what happened. What charities do you recommend and are Shelterbox as good as any? Thanks
  11. Sounds like I may need to get our Dmax checked as never get those kind of figures. Is it hilly around you Dean?
  12. All sorted now. Thanks
  13. I am not that organised Hodge
  14. The picture does not really tell the story. The tricky one is inside the housing in the top of the picture. If you look very closely you may be able to spot it loose on the shaft. Can't get it out until the whole thing is apart.
  15. Thanks Mendiplogs
  16. Tried machine Mart but they were pretty vague on the phone. Mole Avon at Oakhampton have got some Draper Expert rachet ones so may pay them a visit. Thanks you two
  17. Good idea Jon Not got a Mole valley close by but will ring round a couple of other similar stores we do have
  18. Broken our tractor and failing to remove some bearings as our circlip pliers are far too small. I can see various ones on Ebay but would nice to pick up some today. Are there any outlets for this sort of thing? Looked at Halfords but the only ones they have listed are the same small ones as we have. Any pointers appreciated

  20. I have found our processor more fussy about chain sharpening than a chainsaw. Keeping the tooth length even and the right amount taken off the rakers makes a big difference. Narrower chain on the Farmi but don't see why it would be very different to the Tajfan.
  21. Thanks Chris. That high! If I got 75% of new I would be a happy bunny. I realise there will probably be some negotiation but just not sure where to start. If I knew what SH ones went for this would be a much easier game
  22. Looking to sell our TR70 branch logger and have a buyer interested. They want me to come up with a price. I have no idea what is fair and can't find any other SH machines to compare with. It's in pretty good nick but the paint is poor in place but mechanically 100%. So 50%-60%-70% of the price of a new one what do you think? I would like to sell it them as they are happy for me to hire it in occasionally for our charcoal. Cant justify it sitting idle in the shed 360 days of the year. Thanks Beau
  23. Wow that's the kind of customer we all need Been dead but taken orders for 8 cube today.
  24. Never seen one of these before but might be of interest. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1651448928417477&set=gm.780872098695667&type=1&theater
  25. Yes great wood store Should not have any serious mould issues with sycamore stored in there. As for buying the load if it's possible I would take a look at it before delivery. I have had loads in the past where it's described as "well seasoned" and this means the darn stuff is rotting.
