  1. Great no shortage of acid soil here. Last bit of field I tested was pH 5.6
  2. For the replanting how close can we plant them and do they need pots? Also we have a large raised bed that's unused so would that be suitable? Thanks
  3. Sound like we have our after afternoon planned out. Thanks TGB
  4. Over egging size again Mark 2-3 inch not foot
  5. Suppose I did ask for that Ok the ground is as hard as nails so don't want to waste my time if they are all going to die. Not sure how much you need to dig out to not disturb any roots. Wondered about using a post hole digger but sort of in reverse to get them out.
  6. We have had loads of of little beech seedling come up in our fields this spring. They are about 2-3" high but will get eaten when the sheep go back in in the field. Will they survive being transplanted now and if yes what's the best way to dig them out? Thanks Beau
  7. Yes he came to David as a Pro and then got better. Most of us had done very little woodwork before going there. The cabinet was an oriental style with multiple drawers. The drawers were simply a perfect fit. The outside then had inlaid petals on it. Was very elegant and perfectly made. Think David was asking over 10K for it and this is back in 1989.....ish Sorry for the derail scraggs
  8. Ye can't complain about the quality of training. David was the flair and Malcolm was the day to day craftsman. Best piece I saw leave the workshop was actually made by Terry Sawle though.
  9. Jon click where it says forum at the top of the page then scroll right down to the bottom where it says members. 21927 looks a very good guess.
  10. Sound like an ideal shed. Ours logs get wet when the wind blows but not had any problems with our birch rotting. This on Dartmoor so you should easily get away with it in arid Norfolk Just keep an eye on it and get it to the sheds if it shows signs of turning.
  11. If you don't keep it steady which I probably haven't how is the charcoal different. I clearly have charcoal and it works fine but maybe it could be better. What sort of temp would you aim at for BBQ charcoal. Is the 400C mentioned by openspaceman good enough for this use? Thanks
  12. It didn't used to cost as much as does these days. Was fortunate that my folks payed for me to spend a year with David instead of being packed off to Uni. This was when he was in Bideford near the coal yard. He did enjoy teaching but rarely had the time as running the workshops and keeping it in work was nearly a full time job so Malcolm did a lot of the teaching .Think he went bust a few times along the way so having students wasn't profitable enough. So were you at Appledore? You got me racking my brains for the peace of slime
  13. Exactly. If stored in soggy unvented shed it may well turn to dust but cut split birch stored well will be loverly. Been selling some I processed 16 months ago and they are perfect and I would expect them to stay that way for another year if I don't sell them first.
  14. Think you would be looking at £2000 minimum. Made a large wardrobe 25 years back and that was over a £1000 and I don't remember it being enough to cover the hours I put into it.
  15. You trained with David?
  16. How critical is the temperature of the burn to the quality of the charcoal? I see the Exeter retort and that Bavarian one in the video all have a thermometer. On our retort I just watch to see if the wood is giving off it's its gas. If these flames die back a bit I feed the fire and if it keeps going I leave it. No brown ends and no ash but maybe there is more to it than that.
  17. Looks great James. SCM is good solid pro gear and a power feed is such a boon for a quality cut and handling larger sections. Only thing missing is a sliding carriage which would be handy if you want to do tenons.
  18. This one? [ame] [/ame]
  19. Looking at the mess in Nepal me and the Mrs would like to make a small donation. Used to give to Shelterbox but they had some scandal a while ago but don't know what happened. What charities do you recommend and are Shelterbox as good as any? Thanks
  20. Sounds like I may need to get our Dmax checked as never get those kind of figures. Is it hilly around you Dean?
  21. All sorted now. Thanks
  22. I am not that organised Hodge
  23. The picture does not really tell the story. The tricky one is inside the housing in the top of the picture. If you look very closely you may be able to spot it loose on the shaft. Can't get it out until the whole thing is apart.
  24. Thanks Mendiplogs
  25. Tried machine Mart but they were pretty vague on the phone. Mole Avon at Oakhampton have got some Draper Expert rachet ones so may pay them a visit. Thanks you two
