  1. Don't know to be honest. Was sold it as sweet chestnut for doing some fencing. Thinking about it the larger stuff did have twist in the grain. Thought that was indicative of sweet chestnut. The ends have an orange tinge to them. What do you reckon?
  2. Burning some now and when dry it's lighter than almost any other hardwood we have here. Bliming heavy when wet though. Interesting that quite a few of you really rate it. The stuff we have is not anything I would want again but wonder if there are different varieties.
  3. Do you honestly think that's true or are you just playing devils advocate? Some reading for you. The key bit is in 4.1 "This study shows that whilst the embodied energy figures have increased significantly over those presented in the past, this is still the case, with the embodied energy representing less than 5% of the total generated energy for both turbines, assuming a minimum 20-year service life"http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.researchgate.net%2Fprofile%2FRobert_Crawford3%2Fpublication%2F223338285_Life_cycle_energy_and_greenhouse_emissions_analysis_of_wind_turbines_and_the_effect_of_size_on_energy_yield%2Flinks%2F548d1cc00cf214269f20e6bc.pdf&ei=v-YFVbTwPPKQ7AbZlIC4Cw&usg=AFQjCNGXYekmKPS8X1ZB83MfRO4gKnklDQ&sig2=UpAmzfTmH7tqUKKJFd_LKw&bvm=bv.88198703,d.ZGU And for something more fluffy [ame] [/ame]
  4. Lovely to process. Very slow to dry and not the finest of fuel as it's light but it burns OK
  5. Would not like to speculate how long that lot would take but it will pay to get it processed to logs.
  6. Liking the look of that Clipex fencing. [ame] [/ame] Any idea what it costs per post?
  7. Get well soon Sean. Hope you make a full recovery.
  8. " Do you think people that use no fossil fuel live in a cave or are they just visiting from another planet?" No does it sound like I do? TVI has put across where I stand. Good post Graham Posted by skyhuck "Obviously, but lets have them working here in our country where we can regulate them properly and if things go wrong its we who pay the cost, not the poor, weak, voiceless people of some far of land." Yes I agree to a point but let's face it if we get our hands on yet another cheap fossil fuel we won't stop using the unregulated countries supplies we will just continue to be wasteful with it all. Tax fossil fuel to the hilt and force us into renewables would be my policy. It wouldn't be comfortable but it's going to have to happen sooner or later so lets make it sooner.
  9. I thought it was the oil and gas companies that are behind fracking
  10. No you said "The only people who have the right to object to fracking are those who use no fossil fuel, anyone else is just a hypocrite IMO." And a I strongly disagree.
  11. Nice one Ian. How are the legs attached?
  12. What a load of tosh:thumbdown: There are lots of energy options available with fracking being just one. Sure other options may cost more per kWh but they exist and I think we should pursue them.
  13. Why not do a test. Get some offcuts and see if it holds firm. Don't know what you chaps are on about. What could be more exciting than talking about nail length while sipping a pint of water. Living the dream
  14. Depends what wood you are nailing too but I would go for 65mm-75mm long. Would have thought 50mm could easily pull out in soft timbers.
  15. Chestnut is the cheapest hardwood I have seen and that's £45 tonne delivered. Nicest wood to process but so sloooooooow to dry. Never been offered ash only and doubt I would be prepared to pay the premium it commands. Mixed loads seem to be £55-£60 delivered down here.
  16. Thanks for your honesty. Was not too bothered before when I first started this thread and realised how bad it was for others so just been taking the pills when it flares up. Now it's pills all the time and still not controlling it so my look into the Op. Hope you find a way of getting the surgery
  17. When making bowls I glue a round base plate of 18mm MDF to the bottom and then screw the faceplate to this. Make sure both surfaces are completely flat and grease free for a good glue joint. When done just cut of MDF with a saw close to the base and finish off with a plane.
  18. Great that's very helpful and backed up quite a lot of what I thought. Doing most of what suggest except the wheat which I only recently discovered could be an issue. Basically a paleo diet fits the bill. To date the Doc has told me none of this and it's just been advice from fellow sufferers like yourself that have been most helpful. Can I ask what was about you lifestyle that made the consultant knock you back? Job, diet or other?
  19. Looks like a beautiful part of the world. Thanks for sharing
  20. Found an interesting site for real world MPG Here is the Ranger for the OP Ford Ranger Mileage | Fuelly
  21. How on earth is that allowed? I thought modern EU regulation was pushing to make all energy consuming items more efficient but if that is right it makes a mockery of the figures.
  22. Any diet advice for lessening the effect of a hiatus hernia? It's been a lot worse lately and work is proving difficult so looking for natural ways to improve things.
  23. No but you don't expect manufacturers to blatantly lie about the combined mpg figures. Before doing logs I was driving old diesel estate cars from Ford, Citroen and Peugeot. With all of them if you drove carefully the book figures could be achieved or exceeded. I partially went for the the Dmax due to the supposed good fuel economy compared with other trucks but it looks like the numbers were made up in cloud cuckoo land:thumbdown:
  24. Was going to ask the same question. I only go on actual calculated figures don't trust the onboard gizmos.
  25. Dmax is I think the Rodeo's replacement. Regardless of what the official combined book figures say (37 mpg) we are returning similar figures to your Ranger. Took the processor up the line a few weeks back and returned 18mpg doing 55-60 mph on main roads. Does 24-25 mpg with mixed towing and log deliveries on short trips around our Devon lanes. Only got 30 mpg out of it once and that was going up to the APF pretty much unladen. BFG ATs and a canopy probably don't help ours.
