  1. Billets are fine if you want to have little machinery and cheap manpower but they are so slow to make and later cut. Maybe a good option if you can only get oversized timber. Don't know what quality timber you get but I seem to get a lot of misshapen stuff so it make lousy billets and then there are all the end logs to deal with unless you can get wood in perfect lengths. Takes me 25-30min to split a m3 of billets and nearly the same again to cut to length. On the processor the same wood goes straight to logs in 20-25 min. Billets do dry well and can be stored cheaply stacked on pallets. Pros and cons to both but I am firmly in the logs camp and not bothered making any billets this season.
  2. I have the Clark forest one Log Jack | Clark Forest : Logging It's good at the rolling but tends to fall sideways as the base is small. You could knock out the black bungs and wedge in a length of wood to extend its base but then is going to make it cumbersome. A few guys on here have one from Rob D and seem to rate it. Think it must be this one Products for the category: Forestry equipment Might be worth doing a search on here for the Woodchuck. Welcome to Arbtalk
  3. Hahahaha that's great. Knowing your sense of humor it's surprising you didn't get yourself in trouble
  4. That's rotten TVI Good on you for being the good samaritan
  5. Been soggy for days and dreadful this morning but it's temporarily cleared so off to do some deliveries Upside to all this rain is it's got folks thinking about winter
  6. That's good stuff Paul. Reminds me of this clip [ame] [/ame] Cheers
  7. Taken 9 days to cut it all up! Only working on my own but must have been doing at least 10 ton a day so makes the stack 90 ton minimum. Thought that was a hell of alot to cut in 3 days.
  8. Presume if I fit a separate tank and run on rapeseed oil it would be OK?
  9. You also worried about breathing the vapours? I could break into the oil line by the tank and add a separate oil tank but had hoped there might be a simple option.
  10. You say that Paul but it's too far east for some of us
  11. Been logging up a large pile of wood for a chap with the processor. I asked how long it taken to cut and he said 2 Polish guys had cut, sned and stacked the whole lot in 3 days. It was all small plantation ash and alder with diameters from 6" -10" and was left in the lengths upto 20' or whatever was man handleable for it's size. So how much would you expect to cut in that time? I can have guess at how much it was from the processing but be interested to see what 2 guys should be able to do in 3 days before saying how much I thought there was there.
  12. Just make it up as you go along Red wine bottle cap makes a quick nose. Legs well chop them down until you're happy with them. Hardest bit I had was finding the right twigs for the antlers.
  13. 6 times the cost Guess I wont be going down that route then. It takes best part of 40 litres to fill it up Thanks Pete
  14. What's happened to your engine?
  15. Something like this http://www.lubricants.total.com/industry/business-sectors/biodegradable-lubricants/hydraulic-oil.html
  16. Our processor uses ISO 32 hydraulic oil to lube the chain which from the chains point of view seems to work fine but I must end up breathing in this vaporised oil Have looked at adding a separate tank but it's a bit of a fiddle. Just had a quick google and it appears there are several biodegradable hydraulic oils on the market. Anyone any experience of them and just because it biodegrades is it likely to be any safer to inhale? Thanks
  17. Had a leak there on WP 36. Logs fall off the conveyor and smack it. The 36 has a different hose that I have had to replace but connector was integral to it.
  18. I process logs for one chap who has huge pile under a lean-to. In the summer months he drags them out with the handler a spread them on the yard. His logs do seem to dry pretty well. Should add he does have a large concreted yard.
  19. Surprised you use Tesco. I know they're cheap but always here it said supermarket fuel is not as good but no evidence either way.
  20. Another great day down here. Been working in North Cornwall today and had to slap on sunscreen Makes a change for us to be having the best of it. Sure normal service will resume shortly.
  21. They could but then the top of the greedy boards would overhang the sides and reduce my load carrying capacity. Need to get 2 cube in there. It's not a big deal pulling some logs out anyway. When loaded with one cube can just mound them in the middle and get virtually all of them out in one hit.
  22. Been delivering today so took some pictures. It's not perfect and as you can see some get hung up behind the wheel arches but it beats handballing them all off. It got loaded all the way to the back but I had an assistant. Paddy can't resist jumping in the truck even with logs being thrown in over him
