Ivi had this problem and so have the lads several times. you're right about the saw dust and dirt getting in. If you cut a hole near the bottom of the tongue you can get you' finger or screwdriver in there to hoik it out and make them wearable again. A job you should not have to do mind!!

How do you mean the needles are in pairs of 2/3/4? Do you mean they are pairs on their own, 2 pairs, 3 pairs, 4 pairs? The needles themselves should be in pairs, 3's or 5's.

Good advice Nailer. The truth is pedestrians have always done this and always will. They feel they have the right to continue the path they always take every day and you're in their back yard. the more secure the barrier, the less likely they are to enter. Don't get hit up about it and be watchful for public entering your work zone. As Nailer said, be polite and don't get angry as that will get you nowhere. I have heard stories (especially in London) of people pulling knives on the work force when approached. It is not worth the hassle and agro imo. As I said earlier, some people feel it is their right to be able to walk down their street without interruption and if they did get hurt where would the blame lie, even with all the correct signing, lighting and guarding? Not worth finding out. Keep it polite and friendly and crack on with what you need to do and accept that some people are imbeciles and will wander through your site without a care in the world!!

I certainly would. Should be easy to make profit on that and an easier day!!

I like a lot of your techniques Dadio and I liked the demonstration you gave several months ago to get a hung up tree down (which you got a lot of flak for). I am not so sure about this one though! Maybe I will watch it again.

I hate that, I got called out to an 'emergency job' one evening last year. Was told tree was perilously hung up. Managed to get a mate (who is also tree surgeon) at short notice to join me. Turned out they were just getting prices, it was bloody dark!!!

I don't think Le Sanglier has done a great deal wrong here, in fact I think it is a fair comment. There does seem to be an awful lot of misunderstanding on this subject. What is not helping is people are mixing the Latin name with the English name in the same sentence.

I don't remember any at Stourhead Andrew though there is a monster of a Leyland Cypress, at least I think its a Leyland.

Over the years forest fires have been vital to the regeneration of redwoods in the North West Pacific. Although they are amongst the largest trees on earth, they have very small seeds that struggle to germinate on the forest floor. When a fire spreads through the forest the heat opens the cones allowing the seeds to fall and germinate in the fresh ash left by the fire. Meanwhile the trees fire resistant bark saves the tree from the fire. Quite interesting. As has been said, the 2 spp of tree that tend to get mixed up are the Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and the Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). It is the Wellingtonia that tends to have other names such as Giant Redwood and Big Tree. The Coast Redwood tends to be known just as Coast Redwood.

My wife had this call last year while I was at work. She was told our computer had a virus and was in a critical situation and would crash imminently. Again told to switch on computer and started playing around moving stuff on screen in front of her. They told her they could fix it for a fee of about £150. She told them she wanted to speak to me first but they tried strong arming her saying 'it needs doing immediately'. That's when she realised something fishy maybe going on. My wife said she would wait to speak to me and take her chances before hanging up. They can come across very plausible until you start making life a little hard for them and then they can start getting a bit aggressive. For the record, I don't think Microsoft ever ask for money over the phone. The computer never crashed!!!!
