  1. I worry when regular splitting, the velocity that some splinters of wood fly off at is alarming, The thought of it in the eye. A builder friend works with flint alot and once breaking some up, a piece went through his jeans and into his john thomas, ouch.
  2. Jon your in box is full of steam mate.
  3. Also at the bottom of the leaf where it joins the stalk, petraea joins straight and robur is kind of lobed. Sorry for the poor explanation.
  4. We have in the past applied to carry out work on what we believed to be a dangerous tree (tree had tpo) and the tree officer refusing the application as they deemed it not as dangerous as we. Anyhow, tree fails several months later (no one hurt thank goodness). In these cases, if someone or something had been damaged, the council are not accountable even though they have refused permission to make the tree safe. So I am sure they would not be responsible in your hypothetical case Gary.
  5. I cut and split to order. Some customers have 6" and some have 24" and i can adjust the price accordingly. It does not take long at all to cut and split a load of 24", whereas a load of 6" takes an age and they get more wood on a load.
  6. I prefer 16mm rope, just because it feels nicer in the hand when lowering.
  7. I've seen that a few times jon, looks quite good. Does it actually save time, or is it more hassle than its worth?
  8. So would I Kev. good job for the young keen apprentice. Seriously though, if you've not alot to do, saves the xost of a splitter.
  9. If you are going to ditch the knotty stuff, then i would suggest a decent axe like a gransfor or x19. It will be far quicker and much more satisfying.
  10. Is that the one with the old boy demonstrating? Seem to remember him saying there are 3 different angles to sharpen.
  11. Yeah jon, we were pretty well stuck in there. Glad your winch tractor was at hand, no trouble with that:thumbup:
  12. I think the way you done it was fine, i would be happy to climb those. Dont worry about the fear, thats what helps keep us alive.
  13. Sounds perfect gnome. When bored of that, a well prepared dansak.
  14. I have never heard of the 3 ft a year claim, that could make a california 4 thousand yr old one what height...... i love these trees Tim and find them fascinating. The ones we have here in Britain are relatively young (no more than a couple of hundred years say). And our climate is more like north california and oregon than you might think. Given time, i can see no reason why these trees could not gro w as large as the ones in PNW.
  15. Cabstars are renowned for not being great off road, i have had a couple and can vouch for that.
  16. Bet that felt high when u just had the pole. I always find theres more th those than you think. Nice work Sam. How long did it take?
  17. Bloody right jon, its pissing down here. I am gonna have to get out at some point to do 2 loads of logs but that can wait for the minute.
